Dear West Wing Parents and Guardians,
We are accepting open enrollment for both kindergarten and first grade. We rely on parents to share with our community the good news about the educational opportunities that we offer at West Wing. We hope that if you know of a family that may be looking for a school that you share your experience with them and encourage them to enroll!
Please watch the video below from Peoria PD as it has important safety reminders for our students, parents, and staff. It is everyone's responsibility to be aware of our surroundings in order to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal for all. We ask that everyone put phones down and be 100% focused in an around our school. Nothing is more important then protecting our student's safety.
Have a wonderful week,
Shelly Schubert

Thank You!

Optional Device Protection Plan
We highly recommend purchasing the device protection plan for all 4-8th grade students. The plan must be purchased w/in the first three weeks of it being issued to your student. If you have any questions, please reach out to our library clerk, Mrs. Owen at 623-376-5013.
Follow The West Wing Way show Respect, Compassion and integrity!
We have had lots of learning as we set our new school-wide expectations this week. Many students earned Mustang Money for demonstrating respect, compassion, and integrity.
We are so fortunate to have such a supportive parent community that generously purchase items off of our school store wishlist. Please tap the image below to send items from our Mustang Store wishlist to support our Positive Behavior system! This year we will have a special Mustang Store for seventh and eighth graders only!
Dear West Wing Parents,
West Wing School’s Special Education Department will be holding meetings on specific days this school year. These special days are called stack days. The purpose of holding meetings on a stack day is to maximize and streamline the time that we have for our families.
Stack days are carefully planned to ensure that all of the various educators that serve the needs of our students are in attendance at the meeting. Stack days allow our school the ability to leverage our resources and prioritize instruction. They also allow us to plan and prepare for all of the important meetings we have with parents throughout the school year.
We ask that our parents treat your meeting date and time as you would a doctor’s appointment and arrange your schedule to be able to attend. We are committed to spending our meeting time with you and discussing your child’s specific educational needs.
Our special education team will be notifying parents of the day and time of their scheduled meetings well in advance to allow parents to adjust their schedules to attend. Parents will have the options of meeting in-person or via Zoom to accommodate schedules.
Thank you for your support of our staff and commitment to attending your child’s meeting(s) this school year. We look forward to partnering with you!
Sincerely,
Shelly Schubert

Hello Families,
The motto this week in school is:
Are my thoughts helping me or hurting me?
Our thoughts are like habits. Just as good habits can create a better life, our thoughts can too. Students may not realize the power of their thoughts. For example, changing the thought, "I'm not good at math," to "This is hard for me now, but I am working on it," can drastically change a student's outlook and actions.
"I've learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our disposition and not on our circumstances." -Martha Washington
Help your child recognize what they are thinking and how it affects them by having them reflect on this question, "Are my thoughts helping me or hurting me? If they recognize their thoughts as unhelpful, you can help them re-frame their thinking by:
1. Consider putting a "maybe" in front of their unhelpful thought. For example, "This homework will take forever to finish." Can become, "Maybe this homework will take forever, but maybe it won't."
2. Use empowerment or encouragement. For example, "I feel like this will take forever, but I am good at finishing my work, and I can do this if I stick to it!"
These may be small changes, but even small changes in our thinking can make a big difference in our life.
Have an excellent week,
Danna Evans

Excessive Heat Advisory
With an average high temperature of 105 degrees in August, and 100 degrees in September, we'll be dealing with extreme heat for several weeks. West Wing students will have indoor recess when Maricopa County is under Excessive Heat Advisory. Learn about DVUSD student and athlete safety precautions, and get tips to beat the heat from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

- Please remember not to park in the handicap spots in our parking lot unless you have a designated handicap plate or placard. Violators will be issued a tickets by Peoria PD.
- Our students' safety is important so we ask that there is no cell phone use in the parent drop off line or pick up line to ensure that drivers are paying attention since children are in the area.
- Speed limit in our parking lot and pick up lines is 10 mph.
- Please respect our neighbors and use our arrival and dismissal procedures and avoid parking in the neighborhoods.
Hearing and Visions Screening
Dear Parents,
This week (Aug 15-17) Nurse Jan and team will be completing hearing and vision screenings on all students in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th grades, plus any student new to our district and all students who receive special education services.
If your child wears glasses, please make sure they wear them or have them with them at school.
Please remember this is only a screeing and not a diagnosis. If one of the screenings is outside of the normal limits (ONL) you will be notified and the notification suggests that parents follow up with a professional exam for their child.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the West Wing Health Office!

Campus and Student Safety Updates
- We welcomed our School Liaison Officers Terpening and Wroblewski this week. They spend time meeting our students and staff and also were present during arrival and dismissal.
- Please remember to follow our arrival and dismissal procedures. Pictures are below for your review. We are all responsible for ensuring a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal for our students and staff.
- If you are visiting the campus please be sure to bring your drivers license. All visitors coming on campus will now use their drivers license to scan in and print a visitor badge. All visitors must also sign out when they leave campus and return their visitor badge to the office. No visitor will be allowed on campus without scanning in using their driver's license. Thank you!
- Shade Structures have been ordered but not yet installed. We had hoped that they would be in for the start of school, but unfortunately we are still waiting. Students that are parent pick-up will be dismissed from inside the MPR. Extra patience is needed as we start the school year and our students get into a routine and we all become more efficient at dismissal time.
Arrival and Dismissal Information
Placards
Do your children go to parent pick up? If so, please have a placard in your windshield at dismissal with your children's names clearly written on them. This expidites pick up. If you do not have one we will provide you with paper to create one. (A special thank you to all of the many parents that had this on day one! You are appreciated!)
