Hawks Fly As One
It's Time For Students To Be Back in the Building!
Greetings Hutchison Families,
We are looking forward to seeing our students return through the front doors of Hutchison High School this week. All freshman and any sophomores or new students are invited to begin on Wednesday, August 18th as we kick off the year with our annual Ignition Day. This is a day organized by returning students identified as Ignition Mentors. They structure the day to help our new Hawks become familiar with the building, their schedule, locker, and begin to get to know one another. ALL students begin on Thursday, August 19th where we will be running a 1-6 period schedule. Any students who have not yet picked up a schedule with their locker assignments will be able to do so on the first day of school when they enter the building.
Covid- Masking- Mitigation
While we are looking forward to this new school year and as Covid continues to evolve and is ever-changing our way of operations with many unknowns, I ask for our school community to continue to be considerate and respectful of one another's stance on the pandemic, vaccinations, masking, etc. We are here to provide the best educational opportunity possible for students to be successful and career-ready!
Last spring the school board made the decision to make masks optional across all grade levels and for both students and staff. I encourage you to talk with your high school student about masking. Currently, the CDC recommends that everyone (vaccinated and unvaccinated) wear masks indoors. *Masks are required on the school bus per federal guidelines.**
- Hand sanitizer is available in every classroom and throughout our building.
- Free Covid Screening and testing will be available to any student or staff member in our nurse's office. In addition, you will be able to call our nurse's office to schedule curb-side testing if your student has symptoms (to avoid coming into the building).
- Stay home if you have symptoms.
- When a student or staff member does test positive for Covid-19, families will be notified of a Covid-positive case in that student's classroom

IGNITION DAY- AUGUST 18TH
All of our freshman and any sophomores interested or new students to Hutchison are invited to be at school on August 18th for our annual Ignition Day! This is a day organized by upper-class Ignition Mentors as a way to support our new students with a successful transition to Hutchison High School. There will be organized activities and students will have a chance to become familiar with the school, get their class schedule, lockers, meet one another, etc. before the entire student population arrives on August 19th. Busses will be running and our food available.
Ignition Day Q&A
Who can come?
Freshmen, interested sophomores, and any students new to Hutchison are invited to attend.
What time is Ignition Day?
Ignition Day runs regular school hours - 7:30am-2pm.
Are buses running?
Yes. If you have not yet registered for the bus, please do so here.
Is food provided?
Yes, our nutrition services program will be up and running. Breakfast and lunch are free for students this year but we ask that you register, please do so here.
What will we do?
Students will get their schedules and lockers. Everyone will have a chance to run through a mini-schedule - attending each class briefly to start to get to know classmates, the teacher, and a few details about each class. Meet this year's freshmen mentors and get time to explore the school in a scavenger hunt and connect with classmates.
What should I bring on Ignition Day?
No need to bring any school supplies this day. You are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle and a mask.
OPEN HOUSE- AUGUST 18TH 5:00-6:30 P.M.
We will host our annual fall Open House on Wednesday, August 18th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Come enjoy some refreshments and cookies, browse the school and see some of our upperclassmen in action in their cluster areas, meet staff, and visit the tables in the commons to learn about our various clubs, athletics, and activities.
Students who attend Open House may also get their schedule, locker assignments, and Chromebook issued to them.
FIRST DAY FOR ALL STUDENTS- August 19th
The first day for ALL Hutchison High School students will be Thursday, August 19th. Our regular school day will run from 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily. Thursday, August 19th and Friday, August 20th will be a 1-6 bell schedule.
Here's to a great start and a new school year!
Robyn Taylor, Principal
The school day runs from 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
EXTENSIONS- What is it? (Freshman, Sophomore, and Upper Division Seminar)
This year we will be offering an Extension Period for our students on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, on student schedules it reads as Freshman Seminar, Sophomore Seminar, or Upper Division Seminar. Extensions are an awesome opportunity for
students to:
● Learn about how to navigate High School and their next steps well;
● Get more support from their classroom teachers if they are struggling;
● Engage in an enrichment activity that matches their interests and goals;
● Retake a course during the regular school day;
● And so much more!
During the first part of the year, all students in grades 9-12 will be required to attend this
period so that they can engage in relationship-building activities with their peers, next step
exploration and planning, and in the trainings we offer each year to ensure they are living
healthy lives. In the second part of the year, students will have access to more options that
suit their learning needs, goals, and interests.
Every 9th and 10th-grade student will be enrolled in a grade-level seminar throughout
the year to ensure they are successful academically and socially in our school community.
This will allow them to get the support they need and to earn their required
credits within the regular school day. Beginning the 2nd Quarter 11th and 12th-grade students who are on track to meet their graduation goals and are passing all of their core classes may be given the opportunity to leave campus and have this period 'excused' if that feels right for your family and they have their own transportation.
As a staff, we are focusing on the ways that collaboration can improve this offering over time.
Extensions are new this year, and we do expect some trial and error as we learn what will
work best for our school community. We welcome your feedback and suggestions along
the way!
My schedule doesn't seem correct, what can I do?
Message from Administration and Counseling Regarding Schedules
Schedules are not finalized - Classes still need to be balanced/leveled which may result in schedule changes. Keep in mind when requesting schedule changes, they're not guaranteed.
Please see below the list of priorities we follow when dealing with schedule change requests:
- Student has an incomplete schedule.
- New student enrollments.
- Change is needed for senior missing graduation requirements and/or college and career entrance.
- Student has been scheduled into a course out of sequence (i.e., Geometry before Algebra 1).
- Student did not pass a class that was a prerequisite for another.
- Student has been scheduled into a course previously passed.
- Class sizes must be balanced.
Please understand that all of these priorities come BEFORE requested changes based on preferred teachers, periods, or classmates.
The counseling office continues to work through students schedules but they are addressing them in a priority order.
What you CAN do is take a look at the attached master schedule to see where we have classes offered when. Email one of the counselors, or Mrs. Davis with your name, grade, concern, and proposed change.

What Should My Student Bring To School The First Day?
Students should come to school with a positive growth mindset. We encourage students to think of school as a daily job interview to help set them up for a career-ready future.
Will My Student Be Issued A Chromebook?

Meals are Free this Year!
Breakfast and lunch will be offered free of charge for the 2021-2022 school year. USDA has provided a participation option through the National School Lunch Program which gives us the ability to do this for another year.
Breakfast is served Monday-Friday before school from 7-7:30 a.m.
Lunch is served Monday and Fridays 10:30-11:00 and Tues/Wed/Thurs 11:15-11:45.
Meals are free of charge but any ala carte items (e.g. a carton of milk) are not. All students will have to be able to pay for those items.
Even though meals are free, please encourage families to complete the 2021-2022 meals application Free & Reduced Meals Application . Meal status provides assistance with course fees, exam fees, and federal funding for the District (e.g. Title I), to name a few.
Class of 2022 Graduation Date is Friday, May 13th
Sports Are Currently Happening
Hutchison does not have men's football. Students interested in playing football may play for their boundary area school OR may choose to play for Monroe Catholic High School if they live in the Lathrop boundary and want a smaller school setting.
All students involved in Alaska School Activity Association (ASAA) sanctioned activities must complete all eligibility forms and have a recent physical. Physicals are good for 18 months prior to the first practice.
* All electronic paperwork must be complete in https://www.planeths.com. Both the guardian and student are required to complete this process which takes approximately 15-30 minutes.
* All outstanding fees and fines must be paid in order to participate. Check your PowerSchool account. Fees may be paid online.
* All freshmen are automatically academically eligible to begin fall activities. All 10th-12th grade students must have earned a 2.0 GPA during the Spring 2021 semester to be academically eligible to participate.
