Dear Emerson Families,

On Wednesday, the 7th grade students were asked to come down to the gym for a surprise meeting. The students were greeted by the Chicago Bears Organization who presented Mr. Florence the Classroom Legends Award. We were lucky to have his parents join us, along with members of the organization. Congratulations to Mr. Florence. We are lucky to have you at Emerson! I'm honored and blessed to be a part of this school community.

Chicago Bears honor longtime teacher Doug Florence as a Classroom Legend

The Chicago Bears have won three of their last four games and have reignited hope among the passionate fanbase. On Wednesday at Emerson Middle School, students and staff were decked out in Bears navy blue and burnt orange, but it wasn't just to celebrate this winter surge in the win column.

Young Authors

Is your student an aspiring author? Here's a chance to let their creativity shine! The Young Authors Contest is a districtwide program for students interested in writing and publishing their work for others to read. It is running now through March 1st. Please see the guidelines for details and contact Mrs. Prokos with any questions.

Illness Reminders

Cold and Flu Season is here! Please do not send your student to school if they have a fever of 100 or above, vomiting and/or diarrhea, or if they feel too sick with a sore throat, cough, runny nose, etc. to participate in class. Keep them home, give them time to rest and do not send them back to school until they are 24 hours free of vomiting, fever, and diarrhea without the use of medication AND feeling well enough to participate in the school day. Please read this illness letter that was sent home earlier this year about the common illnesses we’re seeing this time of year. IDPH and CDC have asked us to remind you to make sure you and your students are up to date on your flu and COVID immunizations (and RSV vaccine for infants or older adults).

If your child will not be attending school due to illness or any other reason, please report it to the school absence line at any time and leave a message stating the reason for the absence. We want everyone to be healthy for the last week of school before break and want to help everyone have a healthy holiday season.

The Emerson Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 19, in the LRC at 3:30 PM. See the flier for more details and to register your student. For questions, please email Mrs. Contreras (kcontreras@d64.org).

November S.O.A.R.S Update

This month, students took the D64 Connectedness Survey and honored our veterans during our Wednesday extended homeroom. The Connectedness Survey helps staff identify students that do not feel connected to our school. One of our goals is to make sure ALL students feel connected and comfortable enough to confide in a staff member if they were ever to have concerns, anxieties, or information to share. In celebration of Veterans Day, students paid homage to the men and women who have served and are serving our country by learning about the Honor Flight Chicago program. This program helps ensure the veterans going on an Honor Flight have the best day possible. Emerson students did their part by writing letters for the “Mail Call” portion of the veteran’s experience. This service learning project was a great way for students to demonstrate the behaviors of our S.O.A.R.S. matrix, especially respect, empathy, and self-awareness.

Sports are an excellent way to develop character and valuable life skills in our middle school students. Not only do athletics promote physical fitness, but it also allows students to show perseverance, self-motivation, and teamwork.

We encourage fan participation at our events and know our community takes pride in supporting our District 64 students. Our families’ support and positive engagement are vital in creating a safe and enjoyable environment for our student-athletes.

As a District, we have high expectations of our student-athletes in regard to behavior, and we expect our parents and fans to adhere to those same expectations at all sporting events.

HOLIDAY ASSEMBLY GIFT CARD DONATIONS

PTO is looking for gift card donations to be distributed as prizes for the students at the holiday assembly in December. Please purchase gift cards from any popular places, in increments of $5 or $10, and have the students drop them off in the school office ASAP. You can also drop them off after school at the residence of either the Hartwigs (2001 Manor Ln, PR) or the Serios (121 Wilma Place, PR). THANK YOU!

DAGS DINE TO DONATE

There will be another PTO Dine to Donate at D'Agostinos Pizza and Pub on 7530 W. Oakton in Niles on Wednesday, December 20 from 4-9pm. Please mention Emerson when ordering so part of the proceeds go back to the Emerson PTO.

7TH GRADE SOCIAL - THE MID OF THE MID
