I can not believe we are coming to the end of our first term, it certainly was not how we expected the start of our year to be but as true Tainui champions, collectively we have resiliently trooped through and responded to another unsettling time.

It's been 2 years in this pandemic and it is not going away any time soon. At Tainui we have continued to lead teaching and learning in our school, prioritising onsite that our tamariki have a teacher in front of them even under the pressure of staff absences. Also providing the learning whilst tamariki are self isolating.

With the changeable circumstances that surround us we expect to have periods of tamariki and staff absences due to the need to isolate or because they are unwell. If tamariki are well we need to still offer them meaningful content and ways to learn from home so they do not miss out on their schooling opportunities. At the same time we need to make learning manageable for the home environment.

Over this term we have received many messages from our Government and Ministry of Education that schools need to look at an approach to learning that includes different models of learning so that our tamariki can transition successfully between settings with minimal disruptions to their learning.

Fortunately for Tainui we are already thinking about how our approach to learning and schooling is likely to be and we have initiated some new ways of working this term that will roll out in term 2.

Attached here is a document Hybrid Learning that explains the thinking behind getting schools ready to design learning in three different ways ie: onsite, online and paper based. We want to keep it simple and so looking at our teachers and teams across our school first is our starting point. As we go along this journey we will definitely be keeping you in the loop.

All going well under the traffic light guidelines; the remainder of the year is going to open a few more opportunities for us. We are already planning the year 7 & 8 camp, other teams in our school have outdoor education excursions coming up and the community cultural festival committee are already planning for the big event to go ahead this year. This brings such excitement to our learning programme, as it feels like forever since we were able to even think of these type of events occurring.

An exciting addition for us is that a few years ago Raukawa worked with our school and gifted some amazing names to us that we could use for our learning spaces. These names associate with parts of a waka (canoe) we already use Te Tauihu, Te Rauawa and Te Taurapa. We are now going to be extending this and naming some of our classrooms, better known as learning spaces with these names. Each name carries with it significant information and history that will of course extend in to our learning.

As we near the end of the first term, I do want to do a mammoth shout out to my amazing, dedicated, caring staff who continuously work tirelessly to ensure their contribution to our school is always about the best interests of our tamariki. It has not been an easy term as every day is so changeable, however, the entire Tainui has just rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. I feel truly grateful and appreciative of my team and wish them a great term break.

To you our parents/whānau, thank you for your unwavering support, we are so fortunate to have a school community who have our back and believe in us. Your understanding through this time has also been helpful. We appreciate you and wish you a safe and happy break with your tamariki.

Please remember we don't always get things right and so if we have done something that needs to be looked at and rectified; let us know, we won't know unless you have told us and we are open to this. Come in and see us about any concern or issue. Our doors are open.

A reminder that we take enrolments at anytime from anywhere. Stationary is free and no school fees required. Pop in and see us.

To ensure that we, as a school, are doing our part for recycling, each learning space now have their own set of recycling bins which are for general waste, food scraps, plastic and paper/cardboard.

Each learning space have nominated 3-4 students who are going to be a Kaitiaki o te Taiao (a Guardian of the Environment). Their responsibility is to ensure that the recycling bins are used properly and that each bins are emptied at the end of the day. Our Kaitiaki o te Taiao are currently in training and are doing a superb job.

An opportunity was set forth to all learning spaces, to create an eye-catching recycling station within their spaces. All classes did amazing and a lot of thought was put into their displays, WELL DONE!

After School Care Crew (10 hours per week)

If you answer yes, we are looking for an awesome crew member to join our team delivering a variety of exciting and engaging activities for our after school care tamariki at Tainui Full Primary School.

Kiwi Can is the first step of a journey that takes young people through Graeme Dingle Foundation programmes at different stages in their schooling. It sets a foundation of values and life skills that the students take with them through school and into later life. Each student visits a Kiwi Can class once a week to enjoy a positive, uplifting environment that encourages self belief and confidence.

Our Ngā Pēpī Manu programme supports your tamariki during their transition to primary school life. Every child adapts differently when finding a sense of belonging in new environments, all who are involved should make this a positive experience. We will work together to create a plan and timetable that will suit the needs of the child and family.

Our programme will run Tuesday Thursday & Friday from 9am-1.00pm. The number of visits we recommend before starting school is six weeks. We look forward to meeting with you and working together to grow competent and confident children for our future.

Tainui’s After School Care programme runs from

3:00 - 5:30pm Monday - Friday (During term time)

$4.50 per hour for the first child then $3.50 per hour for each additional sibling.
