BULLDOG BARK
Emerson Elementary January 14, 2024
Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day
This week and throughout February as we celebrate Black History Month, we will be teaching our Bulldogs about African-American heroes of the past as they learn about slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and other areas of American history. They will also learn about today's African-American heroes who are contributing to our American culture in so many positive ways.
In studying the past and discussing the present, students develop empathy and understanding to create a more unified, equal future for all Americans. MLK's message is as important today as it was 60 years ago.
If you would like some additional activities to do with your children, here is a downloadable activity book with coloring pages, mazes, and other age-appropriate activities to support students as they learn about the Civil Rights Movement, MLK, and various other heroes of that time.
We encourage all of our Fraser Families to take advantage of the day off of school to learn more about the legacy of Dr. King. The Interfaith Center for Racial Justice is hosting an event in Mt. Clemens. Additionally, Little Guide Detroit has compiled a list of activities and events available in our area.
January is School Board Appreciation Month
January marks the observance of School Board Recognition Month. This is an opportunity to show our year-round appreciation for these servant leaders and begin to better understand how local trustees work together to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. On behalf of everyone in Fraser Public Schools, thank you to Mr. Scott Wallace, Mr. Todd Koch, Mrs. Robyn Norbeck, Mr. Dan Stawinski, Ms. Abigail Wasil, Dr. Kathleen Moco, and Mrs. Rebecca Jensen.
SECOND STEP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM K-8
This week, each grade-level will begin a new unit. Please view the grade-level home links below to learn more about what your child is learning and how to support them at home during the second unit of Second Step.
Canvas Parent Access
All Fraser classroom teachers provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments to students utilizing the Canvas LMS. As a result, students have continuous access to the course materials and information regarding their achievement.
Parents/Guardians can also have continuous access to their student’s course materials and grades in Canvas by creating a parent/observer account. In addition, parents of multiple students can easily switch between their students to view grades and assignments within the same parent account.
All sign up information and resources are provided on the Fraser website.
Important reminders when using Canvas:
- Canvas works best in Chrome
- Please do not install the Canvas app (for parents or students). We are not supporting it as our staff and students are utilizing the web-based version of Canvas and it looks and works differently.
- If you signed up and paired with your students last year, you still have access to those students and their new courses this year.
- If you need to add more students to your account this year, please follow the directions provided below.
- If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Forgot Password? link on the parent sign in page. Then, enter the email address you used to set up the account to receive a password reset email.
- If you have forgotten the email you used, please reach out to Kim Keith, Kimberly.keith@fraserk12.org, for additional assistance.
ATTENDANCE RATES IMPROVING
After review, the attendance data for the first half of the school year continues to improve! We appreciate our families’ commitment to ensuring students come to school every day.
Through December 18, Fraser had 75 days of school. More than 94 percent, or 4,604 students, are on Tier 1 for attendance, which means they attended 60 or more days of school. On the opposite side of the spectrum, only a little more than one percent, or only 58 students, have attended less than 52 days of school. Attendance rates take into consideration both excused and unexcused absences.
Please continue to stress the importance of school attendance at home and make sure your students attend every day to ensure future success. We look forward to working with families to celebrate our students’ great attendance for the second half of the school year!

READY OR NOT- THE COLD WEATHER IS HERE!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
