Attendance Matters! Don't be a Statistic
Did you know that by the end of 6th grade, if a student is considered chronically absent (missing 10% of the school year for any reason), they have a greater probability of dropping out of high school than their peers who regularly attend school (Attendance Works, 2023)?
Let this be the time that you develop healthy habits and routines that include coming to school five days a week. We want to see you and support you at school!
Thank you, Ms. Hartwig!
LMS would like to take this opportunity to thank our own School Psychologist, Ms. Amanda Hartwig, for all that she does for our students (and staff). Thank you, Ms. Hartwig!

6th Grade Service Learning Project
Our sixth grade students have been learning about hunters and gatherers. One standard that they have spent much of this marking period working on is: Describe the characteristics and innovations of hunting and gathering societies, such as nomadic lifestyles, inventors of tools, adaptation to animal migration and vegetation cycles, and the shift from food gathering to food-producing activities. We thank you in advance for your support.

Do You Live or Work on Federal Property in Maryland?
Our schools are heavily impacted by federally connected students – those parents/guardians who work on federal property in Maryland, live on federal property in Maryland, and/or are active duty military personnel. Because of this impact, we receive federal grant funds to operate and maintain our schools and enrich school programs. To receive these funds, the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) requires us to survey each student to determine eligibility.
SMCPS is encouraging all parents/guardians to please take the time to access and complete the Impact Aid Survey Form online, located in the Home Access Center (HAC). Once logged in, directions to access the online form can be found HERE. A video with instructions is available HERE. The form can now be accessed in Spanish by clicking on the Globe in the top right-hand corner once the form has been started. The deadline for the online submission of Impact Aid Program Survey forms is November 14, 2023.

Marking Period 2 Academic Bowl Information
LMS will host its first-ever Academic Bowl during the second marking period. The Academic Bowl ends on January 26, 2024! During this time, we will be encouraging students to have a strong work ethic, earn good grades, and engage in healthy competition. We ask for your assistance on the home front.
Grade-level teams will compete to be the team with the least total Fs. Each week of the marking period, the team with the least Fs will earn a Jaguar Paw on their team’s trophy poster, which will be displayed in the main lobby. The team with the most Jaguar Paws in their trophy will earn bragging rights, an Academic Bowl Champion t-shirt, and a delicious treat at the end of the marking period.
Information Needed
Online Emergency Information Update Forms are now available through your student’s Home Access Center (HAC). Once logged in, directions to access the online form can be found HERE.
A video with instructions is available HERE. It is vital that all information is updated in eSchool. The deadline for the online submission of Emergency Information Update forms is November 14, 2023. Jingle Bell Run
For the past several years LMS has participated in the Jingle Bell Run on Solomons to support the National Arthritis Foundation. Last year we were recognized as the largest team and the top fund-raising team! Our team includes students, teachers, family and friends. Please consider joining us this year on December 2nd, at 9:00 am, at the Calvert Marine Museum. The race is a timed 5K, but is open to walkers, joggers, strollers, pets on leashes and is a family-friendly event. It's a beautiful course along the Patuxent River and it's very festive. Participants and dogs dress in holiday gear and there is a 100-yard dash for kids prior to the race start time.
Click the link to join our team. The registration fee is $45. Contact Mrs. Dade at jtdade@smcps.org for more information.
