ATHLETICS
CROSS COUNTRY: For the third time in the last four years our Lady Highlander Cross Country team has placed third in the 6A State Cross Country Championships. The Highlander Boys Cross Country team qualified for the state championships for the 45th straight year and placed 9th! Congrats to these runners and their accomplishments! You have one more opportunity to catch your Highlander Cross Country runners before they transition into track. Come cheer them on at Bear Branch Sports Fields on November 18th as they compete at (and host) Nike Cross Regionals against teams from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana ,Oklahoma, and Mississippi.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Lady Highlander Basketball season has tipped off with a lot of good energy and excitement. Last week brought an Opening Day Program Sweep vs Tomball Memorial. The freshmen were led by sharp-shooters Ellie Raguso and Maddie Anderson, and a great team defensive performance. JV was next up and they clearly drank the same Gatorade as the freshmen. Total team defense led the way for a flurry of baskets with multiple players being in double figures. Standouts were Sara Johnson, Isabel Benson, and Riley Bartholomew. Kaysn Pino, Skylar Ware, and Ireland Osborne led the way defensively. The night got even better with Varsity’s show of teamwork and tenacity down the stretch against those fighting lady wildcats. Campbell Biggerstaff and Freshman Rachael Roberts led the way offensively, but the lady highlanders displayed their STRENGTH IN NUMBERS, by getting big contributions from many players on the roster on both sides of the ball. Bella Moore, Caelynn Hoffman, Abbie York, and Lily Mitchell, doubled as “S.W.A.T. Agents” protecting the rim and paint. Isa Alaniz, Claudia Keene, and Juli Vaquera gave the Wildcats fits with tremendous on-ball pressure. Every time the game got close, Campbell Biggerstaff made a big shot to extend the lead. The Highlanders proved to be too much for the wildcats to handle.
We followed the sweep with a game on Election Day against the Lady Bearkats from Klein. The Freshmen played a hard-fought back-and-forth game, but got clawed by the Bearkats, losing by four in an overtime thriller. JV started slow, but got going behind a spark set by Isabel Benson. Then, the firestorm started with Alaina Kiscoe and Riley Bartholomew hitting big shots and timely baskets. Kasyn Pino and Sara Johnson activated their defensive superpowers and shut the door on the Bearkats. JV beatdown the Bearkats 64-39.Varsity overcame a sluggish offensive start with Bella Moore and Isa Alaniz setting the tone defensively. Bella threw a “block party” and Isa came for the “cookies”. Around the second quarter the rest of the team wanted in on the fun. Rachael Roberts, Aiden Pino, and Bella Moore began to “cook”, and the rest is history. Down went the Bearkats,
52-44. Early on the Lady highlanders have been “All-In” on both sides of the ball, which has gotten them off to a great start. Keep up the good work ladies.

JROTC FUNDRAISER—WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA: Each year our Booster Club offers the purchase of wreaths to place on veterans' graves as both a way to honor our fallen and to help raise money for our program. Wreaths are $15 each, and if purchased through this link, https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/173137/Overview/ our Booster Club receives $5 of that amount. Important information about this opportunity:
- Wreaths cost the same $15 whether you purchase through our special Booster Club link or not, so you may as well purchase them through the special link!
- You are not purchasing a wreath for yourself, or otherwise getting one delivered to your home. The wreaths arrive straight to the National Cemetery in Houston for placement.
- Wreaths are placed during a ceremony on Saturday 16 December at the National Cemetery. You need not plan to be present at the ceremony to order one or more wreaths.
- Please share the link with friends and family, post to neighborhood social media, etc. This is a great way to honor veterans and to fundraise for our JROTC Booster Club!
BUY JEWELRY—SUPPORT JROTC—KENDRA SCOTT FUNDRAISER: Just in time for the holiday shopping season—we have an "in person" Booster Club fundraising event at Kendra Scott on Market Street Sunday 03 December, 2-4pm. We also have a two-day "online" Kendra Scott fundraiser Sunday and Monday, 03 and 04 December. Even your friends and family members across the country can support our Booster Club by using the online option—visit www.kendrascott.com and used code GIVEBACK-FHNLC at checkout. Either way, our Booster Club can get 20% of your purchase price--this is a great deal and does not cost you extra for all the jewelry you'll be buying your loved ones this year--start making your shopping lists now!

TWHS ART TRUST: WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 13th YEAR!!! Have you ever noticed the 61 works of art by established Texas artists that are permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Collection and the works have been selected and purchased by our students. Each year we add new works to the collection and our next selection process has begun. Our student committee has narrowed down the works submitted by Texas artists to 11 that will be voted on by the entire student body November 13-16. Posters of the artworks will are on display around the school, video presentations will be on Highlander TV and the original pieces will be displayed in the cafeteria during voting. The students will purchase as many as possible of the pieces that receive the most votes.
Thank you to all the artists that submitted their work for consideration. This year's nominated artists are: THERESA BOND (AUSTIN), BRAVEN BRAZIL (SPRING), ELIZABETH CLEMSON (THE WOODLANDS), RANDALL ENSLEY (ORANGE), PATTI GARY (MONTGOMERY), TOM LAROCK (THE WOODLANDS), LAUREN LUNA (HOUSTON), CAROLINE RYAN (HOUSTON), JOHN SCHAEFFER (LA GRANGE), LAURA SPECTOR (HOUSTON) AND CHARLES WALLIS (COLLEGE STATION)
Visit our website to see the winning entries: www.twhsat.org
Although the artworks are purchased through funds set aside by Student Council from the Homecoming Dance, the framing, lighting and conservation of these pieces need funding. Consider helping with that funding and show your support for The Woodlands High School Art Trust by joining our "One Hundred Friends of Art." Our goal is to have 100 arts supporters make an annual donation to support our cause. Donations are tax deductible and start as low as $10!! Visit our website to make a contribution: www.twhsat.org
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT) a 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2011 to help maintain, conserve and display the student-selected, student-purchased collection of established artists at The Woodlands High School. The vision for the TWHS Art Trust is to see the art collection grow each year and to have it extend through the hallways of the high school. Students use funds from their Homecoming Dance to purchase the art works. TWHSAT fundraises for the preservation and permanent display of the art works.
Other than the public sculptures around The Woodlands, this is the ONLY permanent collection of art available to the public. It is seen by THOUSANDS of people every day. Please consider supporting this unique collection that sets us apart from other public high schools and strengthens our goal of being one of the best high schools in the state and country.
For more information on The Woodlands High School Art Trust please visit our website www.twhsat.org or contact Susan Cosculluela at twhsat@gmail.com

CLINIC NOTES
We are beginning a new series where we will discuss a different medical condition relevant to our students in each issue of the Highlander Happenings. We hope you find this information helpful, but please keep in mind that we cannot give medical advice. The best source of information is always your or your child’s physician.
Let’s Talk About Headaches
This is one of the most common complaints that we see in the clinic, and the prevalence of headaches generally seems to increase with age. They can be caused by not enough water, poor sleep quality, poor posture, skipping meals, eye strain due to uncorrected vision, stressors such as learning difficulties and/or bullying, or hormone shifts during puberty.
Primary headaches include migraines and tension headaches, which are caused by a headache condition; and secondary headaches, which are caused by acute illness with fever, recurrent rhinosinusitis or other underlying conditions. These include sinus headaches, dehydration headaches, and medication overuse headaches (taking headache medication more than three times per week can cause these).
Treatment of headaches depends on the type of headache a person has. Over-the-counter medication can be helpful for occasional tension headaches and there are prescription medications to help manage migraines, but with secondary headaches, the underlying cause needs to be treated, such as increasing fluids, getting more restful sleep, decreasing caffeine use, and reducing stress. Other alternatives to medication include the use of hot or cold packs, doing stretching exercises, massaging the area, or resting in a dark, quiet room.
When should you see a doctor? You should schedule an appointment for daily or recurring headaches, headaches that appear to worsen, needing to take pain medication daily or almost daily, headaches that begin after a blow to the head, or headaches that are accompanied by stiff neck, neck pain, fever, and/or changes in vision.
SCHOOL NEWS
AFTER SCHOOL TESTING AT SENIOR CAMPUS: Either students (including freshmen) or teachers may fill out the sign-up for after-school testing, but it MUST be done by 10:45 a.m. on the morning PRIOR to testing. If completed late, these students risk being turned away, and will have to select a different day to test after school.
Testing slips and hard copy tests (unless online) must also be submitted by this time! (Students are NOT allowed to bring testing slips with them.) This may be done via email (mlsears@conroeisd.net), either blue box in the mailroom, or brought to Missy Sears in the bookroom. Please don't forget to open online tests. Students need to be abundantly reminded to communicate with their teachers when they sign up!
We have heavy testing weeks ahead! If your student no longer needs to test after school with one of the proctors (i.e. student will test in the teacher's classroom, takes it earlier, no longer needs to test, etc.), then please remove the name from the sign-up! The number of students determines how many proctors are necessary, so it needs to be accurate. Making these efforts is crucial for after-school testing to run smoothly. Thank you for your help!
9th GRADE CAMPUS AFTER SCHOOL TESTING CENTER Sign Up
The 9th grade campus After School Testing Center is available on Wednesdays & Thursdays of each week. Please access the Student Sign-Up using this link. Students will need to notify their teacher when they sign up to assure the assessment is available.

Holiday Snowfall was painted with acrylic paint on 140# paper. Congratulations, Mary Frank!!
