Broad Meadows Middle School Community Update 1.7.2024
Broad Meadows Middle School Community,
It was great to get back into the swing of things as we start the new year at BMMS! Our students had a great week back after the break and as always we appreciate your support transitioning them out of the vacation.
Looking ahead, students will be participating in our midyear MAP Assessment on Monday, Wednesday and Friday next week. WIDA Access testing will also begin for all English Language Learner (ELL) students beginning the week of January 16th. We also welcome you to join us at our January PTO Meeting this Thursday at 6:00 PM. The meeting will be held at BMMS and can also be observed online through the link below in our PTO section.
Although we do not anticipate enough snow on Sunday to impact school opening on Monday, we did want to quickly review several options if school is impacted by inclement weather this year. In the case of a significant amount of snow, school could be delayed 1 or 2 hours or closed entirely. In the case of weather affecting our school opening, families would be notified by the district through our ASPEN system with information also shared on social media and local news stations. If school is ever delayed 1 or 2 hours, students will start their day either at 9:15 AM or 10:15 AM in homeroom where staff will review the schedule for the day. Lunch will always be served on these days.
We also wanted to share our excitement about our upcoming Grade 6 Science Afterschool Program and also our middle school wrestling program which are both starting up soon. Please see the fliers below for both programs and know this this information is also available to students in the main office. We are also excited to restart homework club this week and look forward to starting intramural basketball later in the month for students in grades 7 and 8.
Please also note that due to the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, school will not be in session on Monday, January 15, 2024. We will be hosting our PTO fundraiser on Monday the 15th and ask that you come out and support our school by ordering food from Time Out Pizza & Grille located at 524 Sea Street in Quincy. 10% of all sales for the day go to our school when you mention Broad Meadows Middle School.
We hope you are all enjoying our first snow of the year and looking forward to a great week at Meadows!

Chromebooks
At this point, all students in grades 6-8 should have a school assigned Chromebook. To support us at school we ask that you work with your student to find a place where they can charge their Chromebook every evening so that it is ready to use every morning. Students should bring their Chromebook to school each day.
If a Chromebook breaks we would ask your student to return it to the main office and we will provide your student a replacement. If a Chromebook is lost, please work with your student to locate it. If it is not found, families may incur the charge of a replacement Chromebook per the user agreement. Please feel free to reach out to the main office during school hours if we can support you with this process.

QPS Student Personal Electronic Device Policy
Quincy Public Schools Student Personal Electronic Device Policy -
The use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices during the school day negatively impacts student engagement with learning activities and is often a source of disciplinary interventions. This Quincy Public Schools Student Electronic Device Policy is intended to remove this source of distraction by eliminating the use of personal electronic devices (including, but not limited to, cell phones, tablets, smart watches, earbuds, and headphones) during academic instructional time. All Quincy Public Schools students in Grades 4-12 have been issued a Chromebook to be used during instructional time when online access is required.
Therefore, for high school students:
1. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices may not be used for any purpose during classes, but are allowed during study or lunch periods and while passing between classes.
2. All cell phones and personal electronic devices must be turned off (not simply on silent or vibrate mode) during class time.
3. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be put away and not be visible during class time. Staff members may request to have students place their device in a designated storage location within the classroom.
4. Exceptions to this Policy may be made by the Principal or designee and by individual teachers to accommodate a student’s IEP or 504 plan.
For elementary and middle school students, cell phones and other personal electronic devices should be turned off and safely secured in a locker or backpack during the school day.
DISCIPLINE
Students who do not comply with the terms of the Policy will be subject to progressive discipline as follows:
First offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The device(s) will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
Second offense: The student will be required to turn over their personal electronic device(s) in the main office. The student’s parent/guardian will be called and the device(s) will be returned to parent/guardian.
Third offense: Same as the second offense above. In addition, the student will be prohibited from bringing any personal electronic devices to school for the remainder of the school year.
Students committing repeated violations of this policy may be subject to additional disciplinary actions, consistent with the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook.
