West Ottawa... Food For Thought
October 2023 - WOPS Food Service News
The Great Lakes Apple CRUNCH
Join us Friday, October 20th for the annual BIG CRUNCH!
All of our schools will have the opportunity to grab an apple for the crunch. Students will be encouraged to crunch their apple during a designated time.
Did you know? Apple Nutrition Facts!
Whole apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and phytochemicals which help your immune system. An apple a day actually could play a large role in keeping the doctor away!
Apple Cider has more nutrients than apple juice because juice is filtered and pasteurized which removes nutrients.
Michigan farmers are estimated to harvest a total of 32 million bushels of apples this year!

Benefits of completing a 23-24 Meal Application
This year all meals are free to all students. All students enrolled at WOPS schools can receive a healthy breakfast and lunch each day.
However, we still need every household to fill out a meal application because this information is critical in determining the amount of money that our school receives from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs like Title I A, At-risk (31a), Title II A, E-Rate, etc.
These supplemental programs have the potential to offer supports and services for our students including, but not limited to:
- Instructional supports (staff, supplies & materials, etc.)
- Non-instructional services (counseling, social work, health services, etc.)
- Professional Learning for staff
- Parent and Community engagement supplies and activities
- Technology
- Pandemic-EBT
We are asking that you please complete and submit a meal application as soon as possible to ensure that additional funding for our school is available to meet the needs of our students. All information on the application submitted is confidential. Without your assistance in completing and returning the attached application, our school cannot maximize the use of available State and Federal funds.
How do I deposits funds into my students meal account?
- You can add funds into your students account through our new food service Meal Magic Family Portal https://westottawa.familyportal.cloud/
- Your student can bring cash OR a check to the register in the cafeteria and a food service staff member can deposit it on to your students account.
