CTE Scholarship Opportunity
www.schenectadyfoundation.org/scholarships
- Please note that it is open to Schenectady County residents who will be enrolling in Fall 2023 skilled trades classes or are studying to teach vocational subjects.
- If a student has a Schenectady County permanent address and are taking classes for teacher education in the trades, they are eligible for this opportunity.
The scholarship was established to honor the memory of David J. Goyette. Dave was a force of goodness in the world. He had a gift for making everyone he encountered feel valued and was known for his quiet acts of kindness, uplifting words, and sharing of whatever knowledge might help someone. Dave earned an A.O.S. and A.A.S. in HVAC/R and had a successful career as a service technician, manager, and trainer for many years. To fulfill his life-long dream of being a teacher, at the age of 49 he received a B.S. in Vocational Education from SUNY Oswego, summa cum laude. Dave taught HVAC/R at several schools including FMCC, where he developed the HVAC/R certificate program, its curriculum and courses, and established the laboratory. Dave believed in the value of a vocational education and this scholarship is intended to benefit those with his character traits.
Recipients will be selected who are deemed people of good character, exemplifying kindness, integrity and a strong work ethic.

SUMMER? Looking for something to do toward your degree?
- SSHS 1020
- DASA 1020
Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) and Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) are professional development workshops administered through SUNY Oswego's Division of Extended Learning in support of degrees conferred through the School of Education.
SSHS 1020 is made up of 8 workshops and is taught in an online format. It costs $200.
DASA 1020 is made up of one workshop and is taught in an online format. It costs $90.
You can register for both of these over the summer - they are both offered online! They both MUST be taken before you can student teach.
NOTE: If you have already taken DASA somewhere else, you can make a copy of your certificate, write your ID number on it and send it to the Registrar. It will then be added to your degree works and fulfill the requirement for graduation. You do not have to retake it.

IMPORTANT NOTES
- CTE 509 is a prerequisite for most of the other courses in our MSEd Initial Certification programs; be sure to take that as one of your first courses
- CTE 312/512 should not be taken until your FINAL semester of coursework before student teaching. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT; you will be dropped if you register for it before you should. THANKS!
- If you would like to see previous issues of this newsletter, The CTE Educator, check out our website: https://www.oswego.edu/vocational/cte-faqs (scroll to the bottom of the page)
- All email communications with SUNY faculty/staff should be done using your oswego.edu email. This is for security reasons. Please be sure to link your oswego account to whatever account you use most frequently so you do not miss important information!
- Looking for a teaching job? We highly recommend using OLAS (https://www.olasjobs.org/). Additionally, we have a listing of open teaching positions that have been sent to us directly from school districts (https://www.oswego.edu/vocational/cte-job-vacancies)
- FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS; if you are half way or more (18 credits or more credits completed) through your degree, you are eligible for an Internship Certification with NYS, and Oswego can give you the recommendation to get it. This allows you to start teaching before you finish the degree for initial certification; you have 3 years in which to complete the degree under this certification. Contact your Advisor for more information
MEET YOUR PROFESSORS
Next issue we will meet some of our Adjunct Professors.
HOW TO START CLASSES:
NEW STUDENTS OR RETURNING STUDENTS -
- Our online platform for classes is BRIGHTSPACE - this is where you will find the courses you registered for. To access BRIGHTSPACE, go to: https://ww1.oswego.edu/digital-learning-environment/ and sign in using your credentials. We recommend bookmarking it on your computer.
- You will not be notified when your courses open: Check Brightspace during the week prior to classes beginning.
- Courses generally "go live" approximately a week before the official start of classes. This allows access to the courses so you can get used to working in BRIGHTSPACE and figure out what you will need to do for the semester. You are not required to be in the courses until the first day of classes, but this is an excellent opportunity to get a head-start!
