December 2023
A Word From Our Principal
Hello Fridley Families,
As we finish up 2023, I just want to say that I am so thankful to experience this journey alongside your children. Parents, thank you for partnering with our teachers and making this school year a great one. It is your continued support that makes Fridley High School such a wonderful place to be. Please join us on December 6th for parent/teacher conferences from 3:30-7:30. If you are unable to make it, feel free to reach out to your child's academic dean if you want to connect about your child's progress.
We all know that the holidays can be a stressful time. If your child or family need a little extra support please connect with our Social Worker Kelsey Knutson (Kelsey.Knutson@fridley.k12.mn.us or 763-502-5660).
Thank you,
Kelly McConville

Senior Family Night
Hello Fridley Families! Here is the presentation from the Senior Family Night held on Wednesday, November 16th. The Get Ready Team will continue to send out slides if you are unable to attend in person. In anticipation for the FAFSA opening in December we are asking students and parents to create an FSA ID so that when the FAFSA is open you will be ready to apply. You will need a Gmail account to access the slides. Please take some time to review the slides and contact the Get Ready Team if you have any questions: Kezia Burrows (burrows@isd14.org) and Matthew Kiefer (kiefer@isd14.org). We are here to help! Thank you for your ongoing support!

Go Ms. Hartzell!
Leadership and 9th grade Language and Literature teacher, Abby Hartzell, is attending an international climate change conference (COP28) in Dubai, UAE this week as an educator delegate. She has been sponsored by a Minnesota-based climate change non-profit called Climate Generation. While at the conference, she will represent Fridley students, find answers to their climate change questions, and report back on what she learns!
Thanks so much,
Abby

Student Support Services
Academic Support - One Lunch
This is a reminder that students should visit teachers during office hours if they need help in their classes. Teachers have office hours during One Lunch and are available to help students with homework help, reassessments, study skills, and more. Students have time to eat lunch and receive support from teachers during this time. In addition, there is a Lunch & Learn on December 8th when all students are expected to visit at least one teacher during lunch.
Media Center - One Lunch
Our media center is now open during lunch as a quiet study hall for all students. Students are encouraged to use this space if they need a quiet space to work on homework or projects. There are also tutors available for many subjects during lunch. Please encourage your student to use this opportunity to get caught up.
Letters of Recommendation (12th Grade)
Students may need letters of recommendation for some college applications or for scholarships. Typically, recommenders may be teachers (current or former), employers, coaches, or other adults who can highlight the leadership and/or academic qualities of the student. Students are asked to fill out the Letter of Recommendation Form and give the completed form to the recommender. The form can be found outside of the SSS office or linked here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-VZIJoeDaaF3M_XYKWYKawndBKIgK479EhGnbM_BQy4/copy
If the application requires a school counselor, please use the academic dean to complete that portion.
Things for students to remember:
Talk to the recommender early! 2 weeks is generally a good minimum amount of time for a recommender to complete a well-written letter.
Give recommenders the exact details—What/who is the letter for? When is it due? How is the letter submitted?
Always ask the recommender permission to use them as a recommender on an application. Ask in person, if possible. Email is generally acceptable as well.
Use recommenders who will be able to highlight positives.
It’s ok for a recommender to say no. They may not have the time to devote to a letter right now.
ACT Exams
Stay tuned for more information as we offer the ACT later in the spring. Students are always welcome to take the ACT outside of the assigned district testing day. The ACT test does have a fee ranging from $50-$67. Fee waivers are available in the SSS office for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Please see your dean with questions.
Upcoming ACT tests/registration deadlines:
Test: February 10 Deadline: January 5

Hello Families-
Did you know that students can receive 1 free breakfast and lunch each day at school? Students are encouraged to grab a breakfast before school or after 1 hour. Students can pick from a variety of daily options including a hot breakfast, fruit smoothie and cereal cups. Students must take a reimbursable meal which includes a ½ cup fruit. At lunch time students must take a minimum of the entree and a ½ cup fruit or vegetables. Students can take more fruits and vegetables and 1 milk with their lunch meal. Please check out the monthly menus to see what we are cooking in the kitchen. Nutritional Services continues to purchase as much food locally and provide a variety of school prepared entrees and convenience items. Encourage your student to try a new food.
Ala Carte in available during lunch. Students must have money in their lunch account and their bar code to purchase items. Cash must be turned in by 11:00 am to Kathy Backstrom and money will not be accepted in the lunch line. Please talk with your student about your expectations for Ala Carte purchases.
