Greathouse 5th Grade Newsletter
February 17th-21st
Exciting news for all! BizTown was able to squeeze us in for Wednesday, March 18th. All jobs will remain the same, but with a new date comes a new permission slip. We also realize that parent availability may change. If you are interested in chaperoning on our new date, please sign up on the permission slip. We are just starting fresh with chaperones. A bright pink permission slip is in the Monday Folder (this field trip is free).
Our WE project with WaterStep wraps up this week. If you have any shoe donations, please send them in! We will be working with St. Vincent de Paul next month to help support the Louisville homeless population. It's a special thing being a WE school. We will be honored on Wednesday, April 15th for our outreach within our community.
Thank you to all of the families that came in for conferences. It was so nice to see the students owning their progress and learning.
It's time for Greathouse Career Week! We would love to hear about your job as you enlighten our students on various careers. Each class can have two guest speakers per day. Mrs Anderson, our school counselor, is sponsoring this event and you can sign up with the following link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0545adad28a3fd0-volunteer
Our 5th Grade Lions are ready to showcase their learning and show that they are transition ready. We need your help! CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS: We are looking to start gathering pictures of our Fifth Graders from school events from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. If you have any pictures that you would like to submit for our 5th grade graduation video, please email the pictures to: greathouse5thgrade@gmail.com It would be helpful to include which grade that the pictures were taken.
Have a great week!
Language Arts
In Reading Workshop this week, we will continue comparing characters from different stories and writing our responses as we would an Extended Response Question. We will also begin inferring what an unfamiliar setting looks like and feels like.
After looking over the American Revolution articles produced by our fifth grade writers, we see amazing strides being made in writing. Among other great skills we see students are now using more complex transitions in their paragraphs, grabbing the reader's attention right off in the lead, and wrapping up with a review in their conclusions.
This week we'll take the information from our articles and produce a comic strip using a program called Storyboardthat. Technology and writing going hand in hand!

Social Studies and Science
With the addition of new land to the United States, white settlers began pushing across the Ohio River Valley and Great Plains. What impact will that have on the natives in that area? How will that expand trade/economic opportunities? What obstacles will new settlers have as they move west?
We will not take a test this week, but the topics will be part of next weeks test on February 27. A study guide will come home next Monday for that test on Westward Expansion (covers about 50 years of history so it has taken a few weeks).
Science:
We know mixtures and solutions can be separated, but how do we do this? This week, we will use our knowledge of physical properties to determine how to separate mixtures and solutions.
