Spiritual Practice
Yoga for Courage
For many, yoga is a wonderful form of centering, active meditation, and spiritual practice. Invite your family to watch the below from Grey's Anatomy and then try the below Yoga Poses for Courage.
Did anything change in their bodies or the way they felt? Invite them to challenge themselves next time they are feeling unsure or in need of a bit of courage to try these poses again and see if they make a difference.
Grey’s Anatomy Superhero Pose Clip
“There's a scientific study that shows that if you stand like this, in superhero pose, for just five minutes before a job interview or a big presentation or a really hard task, you will not only feel more confident, you will perform measurably better.” -Amelia Shepherd

Soulful Home -- October Theme: Courage
Exploring Courage Through Discussions
At the Table questions explore the monthly theme through a discussion for all ages. They are designed for a family gathering - maybe during a Friday night meal, a quiet moment in the living room or before a board game night.
Introducing the Activity
Family members who are readers can alternate who reads the questions. Those who are not readers are invited to share their own impromptu questions. Discussion partners might answer as thoughts come to them or take turns in a circle.
Discussion Questions
1. Which cartoon characters do you think of when you hear the word “courage”?
2. Where in your home do you go when you’re feeling afraid?
3. Where does courage live in your body?
4. For people whose jobs put them in danger on a regular basis–fire fighters, journalists in war-torn regions, deep-sea divers, etc.--where do you think their courage comes from?
5. What is the opposite of courageous? (Hint: Your family will likely have more than one answer here)
6. Has there ever been a time when being with other people who are being brave helped you to feel brave?
7. Have you ever seen an animal act courageously? What happened?
8. Tell about a time that you saw–in video or in real life–someone being really brave in a way that stuck with you.
9. Who do you know who seems never to be afraid?
10. What’s a good thing about being afraid?
11. Have you ever faked being courageous, only to discover that doing so actually helped you to do the brave thing?
12. What is one fear you’ve had for a long time? What is one that you’ve recently gotten over?
13. Is anyone in your family afraid of the dark? How has your family found ways to courageously deal with that fear?
14. Do you feel it sometimes takes courage to be yourself? When you’re at this place, how do you encourage yourself?
15. Some memories we carry are painful, and it’s hard to bring them to mind. What would it take for you to be present with that memory without wanting to flee?
16. Telling people what we truly think, and feel can take courage. What is one truth you might be ready to share?
Return to the Discussion Throughout the Week
Thoughts develop with time. Find opportunities to bring up particularly compelling questions again during the month, maybe on walks, rides home, when tucking your child into bed, etc. If thoughts grew or changed, notice together how we are all evolving beings, opening ourselves to new truths and understandings as we live our lives and connect with others.

I’ve Got Peace Like a River
(Written by Marvin V. Frey, Found in Singing the Living Tradition 100)
Principle 4: Each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.
Principle 6: We believe in working for a peaceful, fair, and free world.
Principle 7: We believe in caring for our planet, the home we share with all living things.
Source 1: The direct, personal sense of wonder and awe.
Source 6: The harmony of nature and the sacred circle of life.
The original composer of this song is contested, but a white Pentecostal minister named Marvin Frey is credited with writing the first three verses of this song while the last three verses were added anonymously over the years. It may originally have been an African American spiritual. The repetitive nature of this song makes it fun and easy to learn for singers of all ages.
Discussion Topics
What do you like about this song? What do you think “peace like a river” feels like? This song reminds us of inner feelings or qualities that are being expressed as a part of nature. What other unsung qualities do you have inside yourself that you are proud of? What qualities do you need help growing or remembering you have inside yourself?
Movement
Make up (or have the children make up) your own hand motions for peace, river, joy, fountain. For older groups, look up the ASL signs for peace, joy, love, pain, tears on websites such as www.handspeak.com/word/
Activities
This is a fun song for improvisation. Have the participants make up their own similes: “I’ve got [what] like [what].” Thoughtful and serious responses are great but encourage play and spontaneity too. There are no wrong answers. There are more verses in Singing the Living Tradition than on the recording. Look them up and add them in as you sing!
