OCTOBER 11, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
The homecoming experience last week was great. We had a high level of student, staff and community engagement with our spirit week activities and events. As a part of the week, Tyler Doffin, grade 9, was the high school winner of the Panther Foundations Sweepstakes. He will get to choose what project receives a $500 grant. Thank you to all who contributed to making our homecoming a success.
Next week is our fall break and I want to remind families that there is no school for students Monday, October 16 – Friday, October 20.
Our staff will be engaged next week in professional learning, collaborating on instructional planning and design, and communicating and connecting with you. We look forward to conferencing conversations with families over the upcoming weeks and throughout the remainder of the trimester.
Sign up for conferences, if you haven’t already. Student success at school and beyond is supported by our partnerships between home and school. In October – and throughout the year, we have opportunities to connect as parents and teachers to check in on student progress. Parents and guardians can sign up for either a phone, WebEx, or in-person conference with their student’s teachers.
Please sign up by tomorrow, Thursday, October 12 at 3 p.m. for conference opportunities:
- Tuesday, October 17, 3-7 p.m.
- Wednesday, October 18, 7:30-10:30 a.m.
- Wednesday, November 15, 3:30-6 p.m.
Use this link to sign up: www.myconferencetime.com/slphs
Teachers also will be sending student progress check ins to you via email. They will also offer office hours throughout the trimester to connect with families around their student’s progress in learning. Communication about office hours will come directly from our teachers along with information on how to sign up.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. Together we build bright futures, one school, one community, #SLPPantherProud! Enjoy the fall break!

Principal

NWSC Art Festival
Students taking art classes had a great time at the NWSC Art Festival at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Students took classes to learn new techniques and used their learning to create original pieces of art. This is learning coming to life!
Practice Makes Proficient
The sticky note on the 4th grader’s math work shares her thoughts on what she needs to practice. The class is working on problem-solving – one of four math competencies. Student and teacher discuss choices and align on a plan for her personalized learning time. With each opportunity to practice she gets closer to proficiency.
Competency-based learning is an education-y mouthful of words for an approach to learning that is coming to life - specifically at grades K-6 - for our students this year. At its heart, competency-based learning is focused on developing each student’s knowledge and skills to gain proficiency versus simply covering a subject for a defined period to fulfill a requirement.
Read more about this approach to learning and hear from teachers.
