PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) is an implementation framework for maximizing the selection and use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices along a multi-tiered continuum that support the academic, social and emotional competence of all students.

Ohio's Attendance Guide
This is a must read!
Districts around the state are beginning to create attendance teams. The Ohio Department of Education is focused on improving attendance rates.
Future Forward Ohio, Ohio’s strategic priorities to help students recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, has four key priority areas: Literacy, Accelerating Learning, Workforce Readiness and Student Wellness. The Student Wellness priority focuses on supporting students and removing barriers to learning, including attendance. During the 2021-2022 school year, more than 30% of Ohio’s students were chronically absent, meaning they missed 10% or more of the school year for any reason. Through Future Forward Ohio, the Department invested $15 million to support statewide attendance efforts. Attendance is a critical concern. Students need to be present to engage with learning, so Ohio needs to address the obstacles that impede their ability to learn. This includes tackling issues like chronic absence, mental health and physical health. Ohio, like the rest of the United States, has an attendance crisis. Based upon emerging data, it is estimated chronic absence has doubled across the country. In Ohio, 30% of students are chronically absent, up from 16.7% before the pandemic.

PBIS R.O.A.R Program
The purpose of the Waterford Elementary(WE) R.O.A.R. program is the continual teaching of successful behaviors. This is not limited to simply “telling” a student what they should have done, instead, it is to teach, model, and set clear expectations for students in every aspect of the school day. This, along with a combination of acknowledgment of positive student behavior will reduce unnecessary discipline. It also cultivates a climate of increased productivity, safety, learning, and leaders of tomorrow.
How is the R.O.A.R. program implemented?
At the beginning of the school year the teachers and principals introduce the expectations they have for the students in these areas: hallways, buses, classrooms, restrooms, the lunchroom, playgrounds, assemblies, and the library. Next, every student is given a R.O.A.R. card to carry with them and receive signatures from adults that encounter them displaying, modeling, and setting examples of positive acts. The adults include any member of the staff at WE along with parental figures.
Home connection?
Our parents and guardians are asked to participate in the program by signing the cards up to 3 times each month. Some examples of how parents have used the cards at home include completing homework for a week, helping others with homework, and preparing for school without additional prompting. However a parent wants to justify signing the card is welcomed, we simply ask that they explain it to the child and the child is able to explain it to their peers or teachers.
Every student receives a new R.O.A.R. card at the beginning of the month. Many of the teachers from K - 6 grade have a hanging display where the cards stay for the majority of the time. The Jr. High students carry and keep track of their own card because it is a skill they will have to master for adulthood.
Bronze, Silver, and Gold Status
If a student receives 10 signatures they are considered a Bronze level recipient which grants them access to the end of the month R.O.A.R. Recess/event. If they receive 15 signatures they are a Silver level recipient which grants them access to the end of the month R.O.A.R. Recess/event and an additional prize at the event. If they receive 20 signatures they are a Gold level recipient which grants them access to the end of the month R.O.A.R. Recess/event and 2 additional prizes at the event. If a student fills their card up before the Monday of the last week of the month, they can turn it in for a Principal’s prize, recognition on the morning announcements, and next month’s card.
Results
The students really took to the program and WE saw 90 - 95% of our students at every R.O.A.R. Recess. The staff adopted and participated in the program and were able to use the cards to promote positive behaviors across the academic and social atmospheres! This platform has prompted and promoted a host of ways WE, as a school unit, can tweak, adjust and fully implement an inclusive PBIS program into our school community.
PBIS Kickoff
Is your district thinking about ideas for a fall PBIS kickoff?
TIPS
1. Create a PBIS schedule for the entire year.
- Meeting dates, training the staff, a teaching schedule to teach the expected behaviors, and other PBIS training opportunities.
2. The staff has been trained by the PBIS leadership team
3. Lesson plans have been developed and distributed to the staff to teach the expected behavior expectations by location
4. Create large and visible matrices in all "locations" around the building (an individual matrix for restroom, hallway, etc.)
5. The Tier 1 PBIS acknowledgement system is ready to be announced
6. Planning should involve making this memorable. The more time spent at the beginning of the year teaching, modeling, and reteaching the expected behaviors the less time staff will spend on behavioral issues
7. VIDEO(s) that show the expected behavior by area (this can be done in many different ways)- optional

The latest version of the Big 5 Generator is now available for download. This spreadsheet generates data charts for per day/per month, behavior, location, time of day, and triangle data. This data can be used to generate simple problem statements that can be used for school wide data-based decision-making.
National PBIS Leadership Forum
This two-day forum is a technical assistance activity of the Center on PBIS and provides an opportunity for the Center to share information on the latest applications of PBIS. It has been designed to support state, regional, and local educational leaders, together with community and family partners, to increase the effectiveness of school environments through the evidence based PBIS framework.

Learn the fundamentals of PBIS through a series of short videos that show actual examples of PBIS implementation. These modules are designed for use by PBIS Leadership Teams to provide guidance, strengthen a focus area, and supplement learning for all school personnel, including classroom teachers, related arts teachers, classified staff, bus drivers, coaches, families and community members. Hey! I'm Here: the Ohio Youth-Led Conversation on Mental Health
I just recently attended the Trauma Informed Care Summit in Columbus and learned of a campaign called "Hey! I'm Here".
The purpose of the campaign as defined by youth is:
"A THOUGHT-PROVOKING campaign that shares real STORIES and CONNECTS OHIO YOUTH to a community that helps PLANT A SEED on their journey of mental health and recovery."
The Hey, I'm Here Ohio campaign is an innovative multi-media campaign that aims to connect with and support youth struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues in digital spaces, on their devices, and through their social media feeds. It recognizes that today's youth seek support, understanding, and a sense of belonging in community on their journey. The campaign also serves as a bridge between Ohio youth and the available resources throughout the state.
I think SOME students could benefit from the BLOG and the stories shared by the youth.

REMINDER to UPDATE the districts PBIS and Use of Restraint and Seclusion Policy

School districts shall develop written policies and procedures for the implementation of PBIS and the use of restraint and seculsion that are consistent with Ohio Revised Code 3319.46 and the rule.
House Bill 318
PBIS Connections to State Initiatives
Governor Kasich signed House Bill 318 in August 2018, with an effective date of Nov. 2, 2018, to address multi-tiered behavioral supports to reduce out-of-school suspension and expulsions, especially for prekindergarten through grade 3 students.
