The Falcon Flyer
Weekly News and Updates - Volume 3 Issue 8 - 10/14/2022
Week in Review
This week's Flyer is full of BIG news! On Monday, we welcomed the Arts Education Project team from the Visual and Performing Arts department and the kids absolutely loved it. The arts came alive as our students drew, sang, acted, and danced their hearts out all day. The pictures below say it all. Teachers met in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) throughout the day to collaborate on best practices for early interventions. Next month, the focus for PLCs will shift to alignment with standards based grading practices, just in time for report cards.
On Wednesday, School Site Council unanimously approved our Comprehensive School Safety Plan. Additionally, we were able to find unspent funds in our Title I budget and reallocated them to compensate our teachers for additional time to develop our student leadership program (aka Falcon Influencers), prepare project based learning opportunities, and attend professional development sessions outside the typical workday.
Yesterday (Thursday) we officially entered into a partnership with Oasis San Diego's Intergenerational Tutoring Program. This program matches students with seniors for 1:1 reading support during the school day. Oasis San Diego is a local non-profit that works to prevent isolation and loneliness in older adults so they can stay healthy, engaged, and involved in the world. The program at Fletcher kicks off on December 1st with a book giveaway event. All students will have the opportunity to choose up to three books at their reading level to take home and dive in.
Even more incredible experiences are on the way for our students. Stay tuned...

Staying Healthy
You may have seen in the news that Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) have been on the rise lately in schools across San Diego County. This week at Fletcher, we had an above average number of students go home ill. At this point we don't have information indicating that these illnesses are COVID related, thankfully. However, it is always wise to review important suggestions for staying healthy with your students. Please see the flyer attached below. In two weeks, on October 28th we will also be hosting a Flu/COVID vaccination clinic on campus after school. Flu vaccinations, Monkeypox, and bivalent COVID booster vaccinations will all be available for free on a walk-in basis. If you need a COVID test, we have them available at the front office for free.
New Entrances Are Now Operational
Federal Impact Aid Survey
Federal Impact Aid Surveys were sent in the mail this week to any families who did not complete the form online during registration. It is crucially important for all families to fill out the form and return it either to the office or using the self-addressed stamped envelope included in the mailing. The Federal Impact Aid Survey helps SDUSD receive adequate funding from the Federal Government by identifying additional sources of funding that students may qualify for based on where they live. If you have any questions regarding the form, please contact Sarah Kidder at the SDUSD Impact Aid Office.
Our Student of the Week for is Nathan in Ms. Yamashita's Kindergarten Class. Nathan is an excellent role model in/out of the classroom. He is eager to learn. Nathan has a positive attitude in learning to read. He is willing to put in the effort in STEAM. Nathan designs and constructs intricate structures out of Legos. He is kind and respectful to everyone he meets. "Please" and "thank you" comes naturally. Outside of school, Nathan loves to play tee-ball. Way to go, Nathan! Thank you for being a phenomenal Falcon!
Sign Up for Weekly COVID Testing on Campus
Weekly voluntary COVID screenings resumed this week and will continue to take place weekly on Monday mornings. The more students we have signed up for the screenings, the sooner we can identify symptomatic and asymptomatic cases to reduce community spread.
If you signed up last year, you must sign up again.
