CREW Friday Five
September 8, 2023
5 Updates for this week!
1. CREW Assembly on Monday!
Stories that Soar! will be kicking off their residency with the Magic Box Assembly on Monday!
Stories that Soar! is a program through Literacy Connects that connects students to the power of writing and self-expression!
Starting with an invitation from our ‘hungry,’ Magic Box to, “Feed me stories,” elementary age writers let their imaginations run wild as they attempt to stuff the box full!
Free from the boundaries of prompts, spelling, traditional conventions, or restrictions to a single language, young authors are motivated to share their imaginations and explore topics relevant to them.
In November, through the talents of the professional performance ensemble and digital artists at Literacy Connects, stories soar to life on stage and screen, celebrating literacy, inspiring creativity. More information will be forthcoming regarding the performance in November!
On Monday, we will be in the courtyard at 9:00am learning all about the writing adventures our students will be embarking on while the Magic Box is at Sam Hughes! Please be sure to ask your students about the assembly after school on Monday!
2. Character Strong Trait of the Month is Respect!
This month’s focus is Respect.
One way to think about Respect is “seeing value in all people and things & treating them with care.” Many people feel Respected in different ways and we hope this month inspires discussions with your family about what Respect means to you and how you can practice it together!
Respect is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.
3. Principal and PTA Office Hours- Tuesday 8:15-9:00
Please join me and members of the PTA board for Office Hours on Tuesday, September 12!
We will be meeting in the Library to connect with families about upcoming PTA events and engage in conversations about any questions or ideas that would help serve our school community!
See you there!
4. PTA Update

5. Sam Hughes Greening Group!
We’re excited to announce our first school clean-up day on Saturday, September 30th, from 7-11 am. This won't be just any clean-up day - we're diving straight in with building and filling new garden boxes! These boxes will play a key role in the students' ecology class, offering them hands-on learning experiences about plants, gardening, and the environment. They will be cared for under the guidance of our dedicated ecology teacher, Jenny Graber. We will also tend to a few spots around the property that could use some TLC like the south-side garden and the mulch around the southeast playground. Got gardening gloves, leaf blowers, flat-bladed shovels, wheel barrels, or other gardening tools? Feel free to bring 'em along!
Stay in the Greening Group loop: If you are not already in the group on Remind, you can sign up here. Remind Class Code: samhughesg
Reminders!
Cross Country is Starting Next Week!
Hello Sam Hughes Cross Country athlete parents,
I'm so excited, it is just one week until the start of the Cross Country season. We had a great response to our call for volunteers and practices will start on Tuesday, September 12th after school. Please remember that all participants must have completed and turned in all of their paperwork (athletic packet and emergency parent permission form) in order to attend practice. Required forms are attached to this email and should be turned in to the front office.
Future communication about Cross country will be through the Remind App, on our very own Cross Country 2023 group, so please join our group for future communication about Cross Country events. If you already have the Remind app, you can join using the class code @huskycros or you can sign up through text by texting @huskycros to 81010 (More detailed directions attached). I will be using this app to send updates about practices (and if there are ever any cancellations), meets (and where our group is meeting at the park), course maps and other cross country related information (maybe even t-shirt orders). For example, the schedule of meets has changed slightly (there is one additional meet on Saturday, November 18 after district championships), the new schedule can be found in files in Remind and I will send it out again the first week of practice.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask on Remind, or email (mischala@gmail.com) or ask Mrs. Frances in the front office.
Thank you,
Coach Misch

PTA Meetings!
Sam Hughes PTA has a new board this year -- with Rose Hagood as President, Raquel Salgado as Vice President, Elizabeth McDonnell as Treasurer and Olivia Alicea as Secretary!
Come to a PTA Meeting!
The Sam Hughes PTA meets about once a month at 6:00 pm in the courtyard or library, depending on weather. It's a great way to meet other parents and stay on top of everything happening at school.
