Woodland Elementary Weekly Notes
Message From The Principal
Dear Woodland Families!
Welcome to November and the start of our second academic quarter! Yes…Quarter 2…the time is going fast!
We are looking forward to the 2023 Parent/Teacher Conferences. Our goal is always to get 100% of our families in for conferences as we value the conversations and shared commitment to our learners. If you were unable to sign up, please reach out to your child’s teacher and they would be happy to get you in! Prior to your scheduled conference, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns that you want to make sure are discussed. The scheduled times go quickly so we want to be responsive to your needs and questions. During your child’s conference, you will hear the celebrations and next steps for our learning journey. Mr Biolo (School Counselor), Mrs. Barlow (School Psychologist), Mr. Smits (Assistant to the Principal), and I will be here as well so please let us know if we can support you or your child.
As we continue our learning journey together into the 2nd Quarter, I encourage you to help our learners stay focussed by asking them about their day, reading with them each night, and challenging them to challenge themselves. Our kids are busy! With that, we want to instill in them a curiosity to learn new things, and to develop the grit and perseverance to try hard things. If you ask your child, they might tell you that we often describe our school and classroom cultures as places where we “do hard things.” You are an integral part of this journey and we appreciate your support!
Thank you again for being a great school community. With Thanksgiving coming soon, I want to thank all of our parents, students, and staff for making Woodland a great place to learn. The KASD is a special place!
Sincerely,
Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

Veteran's Day Program
Many of our Kimberly families are directly impacted by family members who have served or are currently serving our country. The Woodland Elementary staff extends our sincere gratitude to the veterans and their families for all the sacrifices they make so we can live the life we enjoy. To honor our veterans, students will participate in various activities throughout the week, including attending an assembly highlighted by a veteran speaker and slideshow on Friday November 10th. Visitors are welcome to attend. Doors will open at 9:15 am and the program will start at 9:30 am.
We are also collecting supplies for the local Old Glory Honor Flight office. Donations of white copy paper packs or FOREVER stamps will be collected through November 10th. A collection box is located outside the elementary office. Thank you for helping us support our veterans!

Counselor's Corner with Mr. Biolo
Last week I gave you some informative links (by grade level) showing what your students have been working on during 1st quarter in my Life Skills classes.
This week I’d like to share a bit about the “career awareness” lessons that I taught as part of Life Skills classes. These lessons were all taught with your child's grade level and maturity in mind. The intention is to give our students some awareness of each career cluster while keeping it interesting and fun. I will break these down by grade level:
5K - We watched a slideshow about careers in health and safety. Students learned about jobs
in healthcare as well as jobs in public safety. We learned that these are jobs that help to keep
us both healthy and safe. All students participated in a career sort where they put pictures of
doctors, nurses, dentists, etc on the Healthcare side, while putting pictures of police, fire
fighters, security workers, etc on the Public Safety side.
1st Grade - The career cluster that 1st graders were learning about was transportation and distribution. We learned that there are many jobs which use transportation in our world and that these jobs can usually be broken down into two categories; jobs that move people, and jobs that move things. We learned that jobs that move people include things like buses, airplanes, cruise
ships, etc. Examples of jobs that move things included mail carriers, Amazon trucks, cargo ships, etc. We had some fun discussions about how these jobs help to move us from place to place and to get us the things we need.
2nd Grade - 2nd graders were learning about the manufacturing career cluster. We had fun watching videos about the Jelly Belly factory as well as a video about a factory that makes chocolate sprinkles. We discussed many of the jobs that are necessary to make a factory run smoothly. The following week was a continuation as we turned our Life Skills room into a “Kleenex Ghost factory” where students were each given a job resulting in the manufacturing of some fun kleenex ghosts just in time for halloween.
3rd Grade - 3rd graders started learning about various careers under the career cluster of architecture and construction. We talked about different jobs within these two categories and we played a fun game of Jeopardy where students heard a job description and decided if it fell under
architecture or construction. The following week, we learned about the very similar career cluster of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). We learned about many of the things that are built using STEM such as buildings, bridges, etc.. To end this lesson, students got to make their own structures out of tinfoil, they predicted how many pennies their structures could hold, then tested their prediction. This activity was a favorite of many.
4th Grade - For the 4th grade career lesson, we learned about careers in marketing and sales. We
learned that marketing is all about trying to convince others to buy a product or believe an idea.
For an activity, I asked each student to make a mini poster trying to get others to believe their idea. The idea I gave them to try and market was ‘making healthy lifestyle choices’. The students did a great job with this one as they promoted their healthy lifestyle choices on their mini posters. We even hung some of them around the school.
As always, please contact me at cbiolo@kimberly.k12.wi.us if you have any questions.
November PBIS Message
We Do Hard Things
Oftentimes, students who are struggling with something difficult will automatically ask an adult for help. We’ve been giving our students an opportunity to give things a try on their own first before we step in. Simply encouraging them to give things a try, will help them understand that we all can accomplish hard tasks. For example, getting started on a difficult math problem, figuring out how to manage a friendship problem, or practicing tying our shoes are all good examples of how our students can work on independent problem solving.
Here are a few examples on how you can help you kids be more independent at home, so that they will be motivated to be more independent at school:
- Use the language that encourages them to “try something first” or “we can do hard things”
- Set aside some times during the day or on weekends to practice zipping up jackets, tying shoes, etc. It’s hard to practice these things when we’re in a hurry trying to get out the door. We sometimes just want to help our kids so we can “get a move on” at that moment.
- Let the kids spread their wings and fail at times. It can be hard to watch our kids fail, or be unsuccessful. At school we like to reiterate that mistakes are a good thing! They help us learn and improve
- Have them practice spelling and writing their first and last name. Your child may know how to spell their first name, but how about their last name? How about their middle name? Do they use uppercase letters when it should be lowercase? Can they write it in cursive? (for the older students).
