Sagebrush Elementary
Family Update 09/15/2023
Message From the Principal
Dear Staff and Parents,
On Monday, September 18, we will be practicing a LOCKDOWN drill, also known as an Active Threat drill. An active threat situation occurs when someone poses an immediate threat to the life and safety of students, staff, and visitors inside our school or on our school campus. An example of this could be an active shooter, someone reported to have a weapon, a suspicious unknown person, etc.
During an active threat situation students, staff, and visitors must take decisive and immediate action to find safety from the threat and create time barriers that allow first responders to stabilize the situation. Unlike drilling for less rapidly evolving emergencies, action must be taken quickly and smoothly, with coordination and purpose. Therefore, it is critical to practice and train the appropriate responses to gain confidence and understand how to safeguard students, staff, and visitors during such an event.
While I know it may cause anxiety for us to contemplate such a scenario, it is important that train to gain confidence and understanding of the situation so that we become emergency prepared rather than being emergency scared. During these drills we will NOT use any type of simulated gunfire, smoke or role players. We will simply provide instruction, practice, and learn how to respond by going through the actions we want to duplicate during a crisis.
This year, we plan to start the drill toward end of a passing period or lunch hour rather than when all the kids are in their assigned classrooms. This is for the specific purpose of training our staff and students that lockdown procedures can be performed in all locations throughout our buildings and during non-structured times. All staff and students will be given directions and notified of the drill prior to the warning alerts being given.
As always, the drill we will be supported by School District Security, School District Administration, Law Enforcement, and Fire/EMS personnel who will assist us in checking doors and classrooms and coaching us through the process. This is important as all of them will have a part in responding to help. Each drill should take approximately 30 minutes as we practice all aspects of our emergency procedure.
At the conclusion of the drill, our building Safety Team will debrief the drill to discuss lessons learned and provide us with strategies to improve our response. We invite all staff and students to provide feedback and ask questions about the process so that we can continuously improve our practice.
Thank you for participating with us in this important training event. Please feel free to contact myself or our District Security Team if you have any questions.
Warm regards,
Chris

Spelling Bee!
The Classroom Bee!!! It’s bee season!
The first competition of the year will be a written classroom spelling bee – a great opportunity for your spellers to show off what they know. The winner of each classroom bee will advance to a school-wide oral spelling bee. We love classroom bees because everyone gets a chance to move on to the next level!
The written Spelling Bee will be on
September 14th (during the school day)
The school bee!! It’s time to see who will represent your school at the next level of competition. After the classroom spelling bees we take the top spellers and move to a school oral spelling bee. They will get a study packet to practice for the oral spelling bee. You can also help your spellers prepare for the school-wide bee (and beyond), encourage them to download the Word Club app. It’s a completely free way for them to study Words of the Champions, the 4,000-word study list published annually by the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
For our qualifiers, the Oral Spelling bee will be held on December 14th (around 1:15 PM). Parents are invited if their child makes it to the Oral Spelling Bee!

A Big Thank You!
It was last November when Chris Powell approached me about putting a mural up on the wall of the playground. Never having painted a mural before, I told him I had to think about it. Ten months later, the mural was finished. I am so pleased with how it turned out. I could not have completed this project without so many individuals who gave of their time to complete this project. On behalf of Sagebrush and myself I want to give a big shout out (thank you) to the people who made this all happen. If you have not had the opportunity to stop by the school and see the mural, I invite you to.
Much Gratitude to the following:
Chris Powell - for your support, your willingness to let me blaze my own path, and for all the hard stuff with the district
Sagebrush PTCO - for your financial support and backing for this project
Home Depot - for help with the paint
Vivax Pro Painting - donations of supplies
Paul Argo - for his constant communication with the district, PTCO, and our donors. I couldn’t have started and finished this without your help.
Rob Hay and Kristina Davies - for your advice on painting murals
Michele Cruz - For getting the donuts and coffee for our Saturday session
Haley Yeadon - for your constant support and passion for this project. You and your family went above and beyond to make sure this wall was finished and represented our Pride at Sagebrush.
