Greetings everyone!

Here are just a few of the things that have been going on in our State Agency Libraries:

• Weeding the collection at Maryhurst, making room for new material!
• Cataloging new books at Brooklawn, adding to the collection!
• Constructing the library at Boys & Girls Haven.
• Ordering new books so we can start RIF.
• And as always, getting books into the hands of our kids!

I want to take a moment to thank ALL of the administrators, teachers, staff and students who support our school libraries. There may not be huge spaces with thousands and thousands of books, but there are adequate spaces with hundreds of books that our kids are grateful to have access to! I love more than anything seeing the excitement on their faces when they get a book they can relate to; Or hearing about how much they enjoyed a book that they just finished!

So many of our kids LOVE to read!

"Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlighting current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship." - American Library Association

I'm happy to announce that the students at Boys & Girls Haven will finally be able to start checking out books in their new library this Friday!

Sharon McNairy, a former JCPS employee, published a children's book about racial injustice. Check out her short bio below!

"I was a teacher with Jefferson County Public schools for 24 years at the Elementary School level. I retired from teaching in January 2020 to pursue my journey as a writer. I have always had a passion for writing poetry and different genres of books.

This first book demonstrates the inquisitive minds of our children and how they can effectively be instrumental in the solution. "What Is on Your Mind?" focuses on the topic of racial injustice. So much has been on the local news within our community as well as other areas of our world that may cause our children to have questions. It was a sensitive topic for parents and teachers to discuss with their children and students. My inspiration for writing this book was to help children understand the meaning of racial injustice and have a voice in giving their opinion of what we could do as a people to make this a better world!"

I'm super excited to share that thanks to Mr. Marshall, Mrs. Moss, and Mrs. Brutscher, we will be adding a small but mighty library at the Brook Dupont in the near future. Our kids want access to books and we're giving it to them!
