Crescent Lake Connection
Newsletter of Crescent Lake School: Issue 10 - Feb. 19, 2024
Month of Mindfulness
It has been fantastic to have a few weeks with fewer weather interruptions and for our students and staff to be more focused on projects and learning! Even though we have not had many cancellations recently, the weather does change quickly and last week felt like the coldest all winter! Please help your child be appropriately dressed and prepared for recess on every day of school. If you need assistance in any way, please reach out to our school nurse or to me so we can help you and your child.
We are excited to see our 6th graders share their inventions at our annual Invention Convention. Students have been working hard developing their prototypes and preparing their presentation boards. We can't wait to see the ideas that they have come up with! This Friday, a large number of our students are attending a combined Chorus/Band field trip to Boston. All students remaining at CLS will have a Winter Fun Day! We have many activities planned for students who are not attending the field trip which they will enjoy before starting their February break. This is a great week for all otters of CLS!

NHSAS State Testing Begins After February Break
All 4th-6th grade Crescent Lake students will be participating in the writing portion of the New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System during the week of March 4-8. Students have been working all year on developing their writing skills through assignments and projects; this will be a great opportunity for our students to put their skills together and shine.
Help make sure your child does their best during state testing! Students need a good night's rest, a full breakfast, and your positive support from home to follow school expectations, take their time, and do their very best.
Click on the button below for a letter from Dr. Katey Hills, the GWRSD Director or Curriculum & Instruction, which has information about the NHSAS Testing in our district. If you have more specific questions regarding state testing, please reach out to Dr. Hills by emailing her at khills@sau49.org or Mr. Beaverstock at bbeaverstock@sau49.org.

The Portrait of a Learner is a collaborative process to define the competencies and attitudes necessary for student success. This process will require genuine input from district and building administrators, teachers and staff, students, families, and community and business leaders. The resulting vision will become the district’s North Star which guides school operations and pedagogy around a collective outcome for all students. The district’s Portrait committee is staff representing a variety of positions and all communities; this team is tasked with leading the work toward our Portrait of a Learner. We have attended Portrait training sessions to gain a deeper understanding of the Portrait process and to develop goals, initial action steps, and a timeline for the work.
The form link below is your opportunity to provide input regarding your vision of the portrait of GWRSD. Please click the link in the button below to fill out the form that will take 15 seconds to a few minutes depending on your style of feedback.
All Crescent Lake students will be taking this survey at CLS during the month of January.

Upcoming February Vacation and Gunstock RFID Card Information
For all families of students who went skiing or snowboarding at Gunstock, your child's RFID card will continue to work for the remainder of this season. The RFID purchased for the weekday passes will work during our upcoming vacation week in February as well as any weekday night session! Rentals are free at night, but they do have to stop at the Ticket Office with an adult to secure the rentals and sign the rental waiver. If they come during the day, rentals can be secured online and the students get 50% off their rentals (excluding the helmets). Students can also use their RFID card for 10% purchases of food while at Gunstock.
We do hope they come and continue enjoying the fun! Don't forget that your child has BFF Vouchers. If they haven't had them transferred, they simply need to do the following:
Send an email to services@gunstock.com
Subject Line: BFF Transfer Request

Each foster, adopted, or child living with relatives presents unique joys and challenges to those who undertake their care. If/when the caregivers of these children need help, the Central NH Foster & Adoptive Parent Support Group utilizes their members' collective experiences so that no one feels alone on this journey.
The group's mission is to support, encourage, and educate foster, adoptive, and relative caregiver families in our local area with monthly meetings where caregivers meet and kids play together. The organization provides resources, training, and most importantly, an opportunity to share experiences that help navigate complex family scenarios. Dinner is provided for $5 per family and childcare is provided by background-checked volunteers.
Contact the coordinator of the program, Beth Maltzie, at bmaltzie@gmail.com for more information.

2024-2025 GWRSD District Calendar
Our district has just approved a school year calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. You can click on the button below for a link to an online view of next year's school calendar.
Winter Recess and Lost & Found
Please help your child be ready for recess by having them prepared and wearing layers of clothing, winter hats, mittens or gloves, and winter boots. When the snow returns, all students must be wearing the Frosty Five (Hat, gloves/mittens, winter coat, snow pants, and snow boots) in order to sled or play in the snow.
Our Lost & Found table and clothes rack has expanded drastically in the last month. Is your child missing a sweatshirt, jacket, or even a lunch box? Your child's missing items can very well be on our Lost & Found table located between the main office, the gym, and the Dining Room. In order to help losing items, please label your child's items - especially jackets - so we can help get them to the rightful owner.
We will be packing up winter items in our Lost and Found when we return from February break.
