Columbia Crest A-STEM Academy
November 2020 Monthly Newsletter
Happy November, Rainiers!
Dear Columbia Crest Families,
November is a time to show gratitude. The staff at Columbia Crest is entirely grateful for each and every student enrolled in our school. We are appreciative to all of the parents and families for taking on a strong role in your child's education. We are thankful for the health and wellness of all and hope the cases remain low in our area.
Due to the raising counts in other areas of Pierce County we are restricting the number of students entering the buildings. At this time we plan to operate our Preschool as normal on Mondays & Tuesdays from 9:00-2:30. In addition, our small group of middle school students who have been invited in will continue attending on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00-2:30. Finally, our Elementary Special Education students will be in-building on Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00-2:30pm.
Kindergarten - 5th Grade students begin Distance Learning on Monday, November 2nd. As we convert back to digital learning there are a few reminders and some information I would like to share:

Attendance
Attendance during distance learning is as important as it has ever been! We are bound by the state regulations to take daily attendance (the same way we do when we are in school in person) and we need your help to ensure we are tracking your student's attendance correctly and that your student(s) are continuing their learning. Each day, your student's teacher has a schedule and expectations for the day for your student to participate in. This likely includes live sessions (where attendance is often taken) and work to be completed. We understand during this time there are often many technical difficulties for all of us, but please know if your student is unable to attend a live session or complete work that day, you need to either contact your student's teacher or our front office so attendance can be marked appropriately.
Our Wednesday attendance will remain the same, being tracked by the social emotional lesson posted by the school counselor in your student's online classroom. Please continue to find time each Wednesday to complete this assignment for your student(s) to be marked present for that day. If your student(s) struggled to attend during distance learning, please feel free to reach out if there is support we can offer to make sure distance learning is as successful as possible!
Veteran's Day
As we approach a day that we have honored every year with a special assembly, it is important that we remember Veterans Day even though we cannot gather in the gym for speeches and special music. The Student Council has suggested creating a time for students to honor our heroes in another way. Students will be given time to write and decorate thank you cards. Students may identify why they feel a veteran, a first responder or a caregiver is deserving of a special thank you. Showing gratitude is one of the ways students can reach out to others.
These cards will be collected and distributed to agencies that support "our heroes". If a student wanted to keep the card because they have a special hero in their own life, they can certainly do that and present it themselves.
Please discuss "heroes" with your children and how they impact their daily lives by choosing jobs that defend, protect or care for us in special situations.
Sincerely,
Lucy Fountain, ASB Advisor
