December 6, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Trimester two started this week. The winter concert season is quickly approaching with our choral and band concerts. We have more than 600 students who will be ready to perform for parents, friends, and relatives. The concerts are posted on the Westwood calendar, and we will publish upcoming dates in the newsletter. Teachers will also be communicating dates and times with families and students. We look forward to showcasing music at Westwood.
Teachers spent time last Friday and this Monday documenting student learning progress from the first trimester.
- Grades 5 & 6 – We will report on student progress aligned to academic and career and life competencies. Families will receive more information than ever on where your child is at in their learning. Because reporting in this way is still new for teachers, they will be spending a little more time over the next week completing documentation to share with you before winter break. Report cards will go home Monday, December 18.
- Grades 7 & 8 - Report cards for trimester 1 will be available in Campus beginning December 11.
It’s a busy week of events in Spring Lake Park Schools. Live on 65 kicks off the winter celebrations with After Hours Big Band on Thursday. It’s an all-ages show featuring one of our SLP dads, Michael Pearson. The band will be joined by special guest Reed Grimm who was on season 11 of American Idol. There are still tickets available. Then, on Saturday there is the Winter Market at Spring Lake Park High School. This is always a fun event for all ages.
Have a great week and enjoy the warm weather,
Sincerely,
Tom Larson
Principal
Vision and Hearing Screening- 5th and 7th Graders
The health office will be conducting vision screening in the next few weeks for 5th and 7th graders. This year, we are excited to partner with the Spring Lake Park Lions Club. They will be bringing trained volunteers to use a vision spot screener to screen students for potential vision issues. If you do not want your child to participate in vision screening, please call the health office by this Friday, December 8.
Spring Lake Park Lions 2023 Peace Poster Contest
Spring Lake Park Lion, Lion Jan Kugler, awarded prizes to the winners of the school's three local winners of the 35th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. This contest encourages children ages 11-13 to creatively express what peace means to them.
Deanna Moua, age 13, was the first-place winner and she received $200. Second place winner was VivIan Proulx, age 13, received $100. Third place winner was Kate Schober, age 12, and received $50.
Spring Lake Lion members, who served as judges, evaluated 12 posters on originality, artistic merit, and expression of the theme. Peace poster contest coordinator, Lion Jan Kugler, said the contest theme this year was “Dare to Dream."

Baking Club
Wednesdays are made for baking club on Yellow Team. Students are collaborating, reading and re-reading recipes, and using their measuring skills to come up with some tasty treats. This week, they made applesauce-cinnamon muffins. Delicious!
Connecting with students
ALL staff make a difference in the day-to-day they have with students. Jax loves watching Mr. Ben clean the windows and laughs while he does it. Mr. Ben takes a bit more time when Jax is near, giving him an extra small dose of happiness.
