Did Your Child Misplace a Hoodie, Lunchbox, or Water Bottle?
Almost a Year Ago, I Told You About The Ugly Truth
Unfortunately, I have to raise this topic again. Have you ever considered that a school restroom can impact your child’s health? When you send your student to school, we act in loco parentis to keep your child physically safe and emotionally sound. Believe it or not, dirty restrooms can have a significantly detrimental effect on student health and learning.
Lately, we have had a string of property destruction and defacement (particularly of our restrooms). This has resulted in us having to close the restrooms until 1 of our 2 Building Service Workers on the day shift can get to them, or until they can be made safe again by the school system’s maintenance department. Damage has included urine on the walls in the boy's restrooms, feces on rather than in the lavatory, and damage to the faucets and soap dispensers.
As you can imagine, these acts are not only creating an unsafe environment, but they are also creating an unhealthy one. When students avoid unsanitary restroom facilities, they may be tardy after searching for a cleaner restroom. They may avoid eating or drinking so as not to use the restroom during school. They may even “hold it” for long periods of time, which can lead to lower urinary tract and gastrointestinal health issues, as well as decreased focus and poorer learning outcomes. WE DO NOT WANT THAT FOR ANYONE!!
So here I am again--making a shameless plug for your help on the home front. Please have a conversation with your child about what such acts mean for them and for others. Moreover, remind them that according to the SMCPS Code of Conduct, destruction of property carries consequences including but not limited to restitution. “The restitution may be in the form of monetary restitution not to exceed the lesser of the fair market value of the property or $2,500.00 or the student’s assignment to a school work project, or both. (Maryland Law § 7-305(h) and COMAR 13A.08.01.11.D)”
As usual, I thank you for your assistance on the home front.

Impact Aid
Our schools are heavily impacted by federally connected students – those parents/guardians who work on federal property in Maryland, live on federal property in Maryland, and/or are active duty military personnel. Because of this impact, we receive federal grant funds to operate and maintain our schools and enrich school programs. To receive these funds, the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) requires us to survey each student to determine eligibility.
SMCPS is encouraging all parents/guardians to please take the time to access and complete the Impact Aid Survey Form online, located in the Home Access Center (HAC). Once logged in, directions to access the online form can be found HERE. A video with instructions is available HERE. The form can now be accessed in Spanish by clicking on the Globe in the top right-hand corner once the form has been started. The deadline for the online submission of Impact Aid Program Survey forms is November 14, 2023.

Dear Families of the Leonardtown Community,
This year’s Wreaths Across America Day will take place on December 16, 2023. On that day, more than 2 million Veterans’ Wreaths will be placed across Local, National and Military Cemeteries as well as Veterans’ Memorials and historic sites. The Maryland Veterans’ Cemetery in Cheltenham is one of the local locations where wreath laying honoring our country’s fallen heroes takes place. There are over 28,000 gravesites, of which more than half go without a remembrance wreath each year.
Leonardtown Middle School is an official sponsorship group (MD0402P) for Wreaths Across America. This is our fourth year and with your help it can be the best year yet. Our goal is to sponsor 250 wreaths. You can help us reach this goal by sponsoring one or more wreaths that will go directly to the cemetery in Cheltenham. One wreath sponsorship is only $17.00. There are many options available. By sponsoring a wreath, you can help to REMEMBER AND HONOR the American heroes that served. Sponsorship can be done directly by going to the link below. The link will take you directly to the LMS site and guarantee that we receive credit for your sponsorship. All orders must be received by November 28th. This fundraising opportunity is being brought to you by the MTSS committee in hopes of raising funds for student assemblies, incentives to promote the P.A.W.S. program, and promoting a positive culture at Leonardtown Middle School.
