And B-Pen offers 4/11 session (date change!) - WHAT JUNIOR PARENTS NEED TO KNOW...
SAVE THE DATE --April 11 (DATE CHANGE)!
Seniors share letters about preparing for college and life after high school.
For the Class of 2024/Junior Parent PTO meeting on April 11, Peer Leaders will share a series of letters to parents designed to help them understand some of the unique stresses and pressures of junior/senior years as they begin planning for life after high school. This meeting, which past junior parents have told us is extremely powerful and insightful, will include concrete tips on how parents can strengthen communication and support for their teens to maintain a healthy perspective during these final years at BHS. Location to be announced.

Course selection time is here for the 2023-24 school year.
Keep in mind that this is SELECTION time for students (not courses being scheduled... that step does not happen until later this spring/summer).
Teachers are sharing their level recommendations with students which will also be included in the students' portals starting on March 21. Students should consider BALANCE in their course selections to set up the best academic experience, while also considering physical (adequate sleep/eating habits) and mental health in their daily routine for next year.
Students pick courses - academic levels and elective classes - that are of high interest to them while also meeting BHS graduation requirements. It is becoming more challenging for students to change their schedules after the school year starts, so thoughtful selection is key at this time.
Students should reach out to their teachers about level recommendations and their counselor for balance and grad requirement conversations now.

How important is enough sleep? VERY IMPORTANT!
Daylight Savings Time means we all "lost" one hour of sleep... What does it really mean when you don't get enough sleep?
Most studies indicate that teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep/night. Not many BHS teens get that amount. While students may get more things done due to less sleep, the quality and the time to get these things done when not rested is greatly impacted.
Plus your physical, mental, social and academic health are all compromised.

Thinking of applying to some summer programs and need a recommendation from your counselor?
BHS Counselors are here to support our students in their summer planning AND counselors need at least 3 school weeks (not including weekends and vacation times) to complete reference requests. Often, students will be asked to meet with the counselor before they write the reference so the counselor can best understand the student's motivation in applying for a particular program and then be able to provide a strong reference. Thank you!

Are you interested in becoming an English tutor? Join Study Buddy Tutoring!
Are you interested in becoming an English tutor? Join Study Buddy Tutoring! Study Buddy Tutoring (SBT) is a non-profit student-run tutoring organization for students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels in the Greater Boston area. Our mission is to provide a free, high-quality learning experience to help students of all kinds. We look to support students with the difficulties brought on by the pandemic, including the shortcomings of remote learning. We also aim to combat inequality in education by supporting disadvantaged students through tutoring and fundraising for local education charities. Although the organization was founded during the pandemic, we are happy to announce that tutors and students will have the option to meet in person this year in addition to our remote program. Our program provides tutoring for students of all ages and students can be tutored in any subject. Tutors and students will be matched up depending on the subject and teaching preferences. Why should I join? SBT currently has several students awaiting English tutors! Tutoring for SBT is a great opportunity to earn community service hours, which can be converted into school credits. Our organization requires tutors to be devoted to furthering the education of young students in the Boston community. If you are interested, please fill out this google form: https://forms.gle/fKXrL7kdW7dS2Njn9 or email us at tutoringstudybuddy@gmail.com.

SENIORS
March BHS Scholarship Letter
BHS Scholarship Application info and additional scholarship info
Senior events to put in your calendars (thanks to Senior PTO reps for this info!):
We would like to share with you some important upcoming dates and information-
Final Exams, Week of May 22
Unlike midterms, Senior Finals happen during regular class blocks and our students will remain in school as if it were a typical school day.
Test schedules will be determined by each teacher.
Prom, May 30-31
Seniors are allowed to bring an "outside" guest as long as that guest is in good standing with their school or employer and under 21 years of age.
Seniors must come to BHS at approximately 5:30pm on Tuesday, May 30 to board buses for the House of Blues. They may not take their own transportation. Exact timing details will be sent out in April.
Seniors will be searched for banned substances at BHS before boarding buses and again by House of Blues Security. Parents will be called to pick up anyone caught under the influence or in possession of banned substances. Those students will not be allowed to participate in Graduation. Please remind your students that this strict policy is for their safety.
Students can bring an "overnight" bag that will be placed in Tappan Gym by parent volunteers so they do not carry bags to House of Blues but will have access to a change of clothes when they return to BHS for the After The Prom Party (ATPP). Remind your students to bring only essentials to Prom. No drinks or drink containers of any kind are allowed—there will be plenty of food and drink provided at both House of Blues and the After The Prom Party at Tappan Gym.
Students must stay at the ATTP until at least 3:00AM and may stay as late as 5:00AM.
Senior Day, June 1
Our Seniors will come to BHS to pick up their Cap & Gown, attend Graduation Rehearsal, & sign each other's yearbooks.
Before they are given their Cap & Gown, Seniors will return books & uniforms, pay any balances, and ensure they meet the school's graduation requirements.
Graduation, June 4
Our Graduation will be at BHS on Cypress Field.
While the Graduation ceremony is planned for 1:00pm, it could happen as early as 10:00am and as late as 4:00pm if we need to dodge any bad weather. (If there is no decent weather at all that day, we will move into Schluntz Gym where each student will receive only 2 guest seats.)

BHS Scholarship Application Deadline April 1, 2023 - ALL SENIORS SHOULD APPLY!
Don’t miss out on the many need-based scholarships available through the BHS Scholarship Program!
To be considered for a scholarship, you must do the following two things:
- Complete the BHS Scholarship Application found on the link below (It’s easy to complete and is also on the home page of the BHS website: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2MaXdeaLGmQ3Nvat_FxNsJoY8FxrtRGvwz1H_DF67t189KA/viewform
- Submit your CSS Profile to the BHS Scholarship Program. The CSS Profile application is on the College Board Website. You must complete the CSS Profile and then submit it to the Brookline Scholarship Program – code 0424. Submitting the CSS Profile to a college does not mean that you have submitted it to the BHS Scholarship Program. You need to send it specifically to the BHS Scholarship Program – code 0424
Once you know what college you will attend, you will need to submit the financial aid letter you receive from that college.
The Scholarship Committee would like students and parents to know that three criteria are used for choosing award recipients: academics, contributions and activities at BHS, and most importantly, unmet financial need. There are no merit scholarships per se given out through this program.
Check your college applicant portals and emails!
Portals are the place where colleges keep applicant information and where you can update contact information, monitor application status, upload and track documents, and view the final admission decision. If you miss a request for more information or a document, it could jeopardize your admission chances, so make it a habit to check regularly.

Common App announced that the 2023-2024 essay prompts will remain the same. Past research shows that overall satisfaction with the prompts remains high among students, counselors, and member colleges.
Common App hopes that by sharing the prompts now, students will have the time they need to reflect on their own personal stories and begin thinking about what they want to share with colleges. Check out the Common App Ready resource on approaching the essay (in English and Spanish).
