Shark Tales Summer Update
Sheiko Elementary: August 25, 2023
Principal Update
Happy Friday, Sheiko Families!
This week's BIG ANNOUNCEMENT is that Monday is the first day of school! We are so excited to welcome students! The doors open at 8:55, and we ask that you do not line up in the pick up line until 8:35 because we need our preschool families to enter first. If you do not have a preschooler, and you are in the carline, we may ask that you loop around. We also ask that all students exit the car on the driver's side of the car, which means that all kids will need to be in the backseat. This is the safest way to use the car line. We appreciate your help in this matter!
If you arrive at school after 9:10, please park in the front of the building and walk your student to the entryway. We have a sign in sheet. After you sign, your child will be buzzed into the building to go to class. We also have a table that you can drop off anything your child may have left at home. Please put a sticky note on the item, and we will deliver it to them by lunch or by the end of the day. These systems will help minimize disruptions to the office and the classrooms. Thank you for helping us with this!
We wish you a peaceful, relaxing weekend. Soak up the last moments of summer! Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can do anything to help!
Go Sharks!

FOOD ALERGY INFORMATION
Dear Parents/Guardians:
There are students in our school that have severe allergies. It is important that any snack or treats brought in are sesame and peanut/tree nut free. This includes products that are made in a facility that processes nuts. Snack/treats CANNOT be homemade, either. Please help by reading the labels before you buy the snack/treat.
Here is a website that you can use when purchasing snacks/treats for your child: https://snacksafely.com. This guide lists many foods that are safe to bring into the classroom (many of them are snacks you might eat within your own home).
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
Principal
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
For birthdays, in lieu of treats, you may bring in other items such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks, notepads, flashcards, ect.
Please make sure your student stops by the office to let us know that it is their birthday. They can receive their birthday recognition from the principal.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Sheiko Elementary receives Federal Title 1 funds to assist students in meeting state achievement standards. This letter lets you know about your right to request information about the qualifications of classroom staff working with your child and about student assessments given during the school year.
Title 1 schools must meet federal regulations related to teacher qualifications as defined in the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act). These regulations allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. At any time, you may ask:
If the teacher meets state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching.
If the teacher has received an emergency or conditional certification through which state qualifications were waived.
What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.
Whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional, and if so his/her qualifications.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which was signed into law in December 2015 and reauthorizes the ESEA contains additional parent right to know request options, such as:
Information on policies regarding student participation in assessments and procedures for opting out.
Information on required assessments including:
Subject matter tested
Purpose of the test
Source of the required (if applicable)
Amount of time it take students to complete the test
Time and format of distributing results
At any time, you may request any or all of the information above from me.
Sheiko staff are fully committed to helping your child develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. We appreciate your support and partnership as work to provide the best education for your child.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
Principal
Dear Parents of West Bloomfield School District Students,
If your child is a student (3 to 26 years of age) in the West Bloomfield Schools, s/he can also participate in the 2023-24 Blessings in a Backpack program. This program sends six non-perishable meals home each Friday of the school year. Its goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry on the weekend. Run by volunteers, there is NO cost to you.
To enroll in this program, please fill out the form below and return it to your school office or email it to katherinesheiko@hotmail.com. This registers your child/ren in the Blessings program and alerts us to any allergies they might have. The first backpack of food will be distributed to your child at his/her local school the first week of October.
Please use this link to enroll today.
SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST
Here is the link to get to all of our school supplies for the upcoming year.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is provided for all West Bloomfield School District elementary resident students. The Middle School and High School students have a 1-mile walk area. Safe, efficient, and friendly service is our goal and we will strive every day to accomplish this.
We will do our best to arrive at your child’s bus stop on time. There may be delays due to road conditions or heavy traffic. All buses are equipped with 2-way radios and we are able to contact your child’s driver, as needed.
Students should arrive at their bus stop 10 minutes prior to pick-up time to allow for weather and traffic variances. Remind your child to wait at a safe location away from traffic and vehicles. We encourage all parents to review the Transportation Handbook with your children. See below to access the Transportation Handbook.
Shuttle service will be available in certain areas. If you reside in a walk area, live outside the District, or live outside the attendance area of your school and would like to ride a shuttle. The form to request the shuttle service will be available in August. It must be signed by your building principal and will be forwarded to the Transportation Department. You will be contacted when a seat is available on a shuttle.
DURHAM BUS TRACKER
Durham Transportation is rolling out a new bus tracking app for West Bloomfield families. The Bus Tracker app is available for iOS, Android and web and allows families to track their student(s) bus along its route, to and from school. Families will need to have their student(s) ID numbers which are available in PowerSchool in order to log into the app and create an account. As a safety protocol, the Bus Tracker app will only allow families to see their student(s) bus route(s) only.
If you have any questions, please consult the Bus Tracker instructions and visit the Bus Tracker webpage on the Durham Transportation website for more information and to download the app.
KIDS KLUB
Families with students in elementary school who would like to utilize Kids Klub services on Late Start Wednesdays may register for a drop-in contract through the Eleyo registration site. Drop-in rates are $15 per drop-in session, per day. A non-refundable registration fee of $60 per child or $90 per family will be collected at the time of registration. Automatic Payment is required. All children who attend Kids Klub must be registered for services for the state of Michigan licensing compliance. Children who are not registered will not be accepted. If you are interested in registering for Kids Klub services, please click here. Families must notify Beth Helka the Monday before a Late Start Wednesday to ensure staffing compliance. To view the 2023-2024 calendar, click here.
After careful consideration and research amongst the surrounding Districts, WBSD will not offer Tween Time Services for middle school students. This decision is based on previous enrollment numbers, which have not been high enough to justify staffing.
