Academics and Instruction: A Highlight of Student Achievement
This week, we welcomed our in-person learners back into the building, and kept our routines going with our virtual learners. It was so fun to see our students engaging in academics and instruction whether they were on screen in a Teams meeting, or sitting at a desk in a classroom. We had some great breakthroughs this week with some of the highest student engagement I have ever seen! I was lucky enough to observe ten different classrooms this week and seeing every grade level engaged in their learning was incredibly rewarding. Highlighted above is Kamaja, who was working one-on-one with Ms. Griffin. Ms. Griffin's system of Pokemon incentives was a huge motivator to keep Kamaja focused and engaged in the work, and I even saw him "catch" a Pokemon while I was walking by! He was proud not only of meeting Ms. Griffin's behavioral expectations, but also of the work that he accomplished. Pictured below are more highlights from this week throughout the building and the virtual world.
3rd Grade
Ms. Jackson's class expanded this week, and instead of giving up and stressing out, they simply MOVED out! They adopted a new classroom so that it was big enough to fit all of the students in a socially distanced format.
3rd Grade
You might recognize their new classroom as the music room. I love seeing the beautiful and large classrooms of Patrick Henry repurposed to ensure all students have the best and safest place to learn!
5th Grade
Ms. Von Behren gifted her students with personalized water bottles this week. They got to choose their favorite color, and their names were put on the bottles. It was so fun to see each of them with their personalized gift!
Reading Instruction
Ms. Evans has the joyous task of working in small groups or one-on-one with students as they grow in reading. We are so lucky at Patrick Henry to have a dedicated Reading Specialist who can pinpoint the exact reading level of a student, catering each book, assignment, and strategy to their reading needs.
Kindergarten
Ms. Willard's class learned an incredible new skill this week: subtraction! It was amazing to see them encounter subtraction and learn the technical names for "take away." Their level of engagement was so strong that 100% of students completed their lesson with a strong foundational knowledge of how to subtract.
Dancing it out!
Sometimes you just gotta dance! Students here were able to move and get their wiggles out. Ask your classroom teacher today about apps and programs that keep your child moving throughout the day!
1st/2nd Grade
Ms. Versen's students participated in guided reading this week without any loss of instructional time. It was incredible watching our first and second grade virtual students navigate their way through Teams meetings to find their correct group and retrieve their assignments for the day. Strong engagement in guided reading means growth!
Guided Reading
Tenarie was "caught" on camera focused and engaged in her guided reading lesson with Ms. Wildermuth. She was practicing along with her small group and learning a new set of reading skills. Ms. Wildermuth had visual cues, sound cues, and so much encouragement that all students participated in the lesson!
Guided Reading
Israel was taking his reading lesson so seriously that he never once broke his concentration. His stamina for learning was inspiring given his young age. This is the face of a future leader in our community - focused, determined, and hardworking!
Using ClassDojo for Parent Communication
The image below shows off some amazing statistics from Ms. Hammock's class. Ms. Hammock uses ClassDojo not only for turning in assignments, but also for communicating with her families. It is an easy and free way to get updates from your child's teacher, and we can even share pictures through the message app to show you how your child is doing every day! Ask teachers today how you can get signed up for ClassDojo!

Highlight on HomeWorks!
This week, HomeWorks! volunteers worked with Patrick Henry families to ensure that all students were in attendance every day, and that they stayed logged in or stayed in school in-person. Our attendance numbers increased steadily this week. We started on Monday with 76.1% in attendance (81.2% in-person and 66.7% virtual). Tuesday we moved up to 85.0% (89.1% in-person and 77.3% virtual). Wednesday we continued to improve with 89.9% (90.2% in-person and 89.3% virtual). Thursday we remained at an overall average of 89.9% (89.4% in-person and 90.7% virtual). Thank you to EVERY teacher, volunteer, and staff member who made phone calls and assisted families in finding their way to school this week!
We also worked with HomeWorks! on Friday afternoon during our staff professional development. Thank you to Anna Gardner-Andrews and Colleen Pollack for your hard work in preparing the presentation and getting our staff geared up to complete their first and second home visits of the school year!
