CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

We are excited to offer the Summer Skill-Booster Program again this summer to all Old Tappan students currently enrolled in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Sessions have been set, and it is time to register! Click here to find more information about the program and links to register for a summer session. Space is limited so register early! Registration closes on June 30, 2023.

Keep in mind when signing up for a session, the AM sessions are designed to review the material presented to your child(ren) in his/her current grade level (If your child is in 5th grade, sign him/her up for a 5th grade session.). The PM sessions are designed to preview material for your child(ren)'s next grade level (If your child is in 5th grade, sign him/her up for a 6th grade session.).

Over the past six months, students from 608 schools participated in the 2022-2023 challenge, and together, collected a combined total of 421,623 pounds of polyethylene plastic film. The Charles DeWolf Middle School students and community collected and recycled a grand total of 1,384 pounds of polyethylene plastic as part of the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge, and was named the 2nd place winner of the participating middle schools with 0-500 students. This impressive total, combined with community engagement, earned our school top honors along with a new eco-friendly bench to be added to our school's grounds.

Thank you to Mr. Westervelt, the Environmental Awareness students, and the custodians for doing all of the behind-the-scenes work!

Current New Jersey legislation requires the biennial examination of every pupil between the ages of ten and eighteen for the condition known as scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine).

Students in grades 5 and 7 in the Charles DeWolf Middle School will be scheduled for scoliosis screening. New students entering Charles De Wolf School at any grade level may be screened if there is no documentation of recent scoliosis screening. The purpose of this program is to recognize scoliosis at its earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined.

The school nurse will conduct screenings during the next few weeks. Girls will be asked to wear bathing suits for the screening. Boys will remove shirts. The procedure for screening is a simple one. The nurse will inspect the child’s spine as he or she stands and bends forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, the parents will be notified and advised of the need for follow up.

If your child is currently under active treatment for a spinal problem, please notify Mrs. McCarthy in writing. If you have a specific reason to decline the screening of your child, you may do so using the form that was given to your child in homeroom (also attached) or by sending an email to the school nurse by April 28th, 2023.

If your Grade 8 student will not be attending NVOT in the fall, please print, complete, and submit the form below to Ms. Adamo by Friday, May 12th. We must be sure that students' records are transferred to the appropriate high schools, and this will allow us to double-check that our records are accurate. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Adamo at adamoj@nvnet.org.

Each year, CDW offers transition meetings for parents to learn about their child(ren)'s next grade level. Topics that will be presented include academics, extracurricular activities, and other highlights for the upcoming grade level. Although we foster an environment of independence at the middle school level, home and school partnership is always a necessity. This year, the dates of the transition meetings are as follows:

• Grade 4 to Grade 5 Transition Meeting- Wednesday, May 24th, 7:00-8:00 PM
• Grade 5 to Grade 6 Transition Meeting- Thursday, May 25th, 7:00-8:00 PM
• Grade 6 to Grade 7 Transition Meeting- Thursday, June 1st, 7:00-8:00 PM
• Grade 7 to Grade 8 Transition Meeting- Wednesday, June 7th, 7:00-8:00 PM

The meeting presentations will be posted to the school's website following the last meeting date.

The Old Tappan Environmental Commission (OTEC) will again host the Digital Photo Contest and Show for any CDW Old Tappan student. The photo must represent one ore more environmental themes. See the flyer below for more information.

One submission per student can be submitted now through June 9, 2023.

On Monday, January 23rd, 104 students from 9 school districts took place in the AMC 8 mathematics competition at CDW. There were 1,910 school districts and 74,388 students nationwide who took part in the competition, with an average student score of 10.26 correct answers. Awards are given to top performances by location, for outstanding student performances in the top 1% and 5% nationally, top performances by students in grade 6 and below, and for exceptional team performances.

Grade 7 LEAP students were asked to use found or discarded household items to create a working machine with at least 5 different simple machine types and more than 10 energy transfers. The students then brought the machine to compete against other students in the Valley. Although the CDW students did not win, they demonstrated great effort and received a bronze certificate!

Students in 6th grade science discovered the differences between gravel and sand and how they filter water. First they demonstrated porosity by seeing which material held more water. Next they demonstrated permeability by seeing which material let water pass through more quickly. This activity reinforced concepts about groundwater and the water cycle.

Accelerated Pre-Algebra students have finished working with transformations of two-dimensional figures culminating with a tessellation project. Students used translations, reflections, and rotations to create patterns using artist M.C Escher's work for inspiration.

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

The baseball team was triumphant in their season opener against Norwood on Tuesday. The Knights put on a clinic at the plate, scoring 16 runs in total. Many of the Knights contributed to the runs, but the exclamation point on the day was the dinger hit by Cayden Yoon. Ethan Kahanov also composed a masterful relief performance on the mound for the Knights to help secure the victory.

Come out and support the Knights in their next game on Monday, April 24th at Stone Point Park at 3:45 PM in a rematch of last year’s championship game against Closter!

Sports Schedule and Updates

The softball team won their opening game against Norwood. The team was led by superstar pitcher Ella Ferraro throwing a complete game allowing only one hit with ten strikeouts. Lea Savino called and caught a great game behind the plate. The offense led by Ava Candullo combined for over ten hits! Strong defensive plays by Alivia Badurina and smart base running by Ava DeAngelo helped the team secure the victory. Special thanks to manager Finley Zimmerman for incredible managing and bookkeeping!

The next game is at Stone Point Park on Monday April 24th against Closter at 3:45 PM.

The CDW International Food Festival is back! The Food Festival is a highlight of the year and we hope this year will be no exception! As in past years, we provide a food item (lunch or dessert category) from your country to share with the students and teachers at CDW. Past participating countries included Armenia, China, Cuba, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Spain, Mexico and USA. Spread the word and if you know someone who is interested, please let me know.

The date has been set for Wednesday, May 3rd, in the CDW Rossi Gym. We will be serving BOTH lunch periods, so from 11:00 AM(set-up) to 12:45 PM(clean-up) serving approximately 400 students and staff.

This is a PTO sponsored event, so we will be able to reimburse part or all of your food expense, but there are ways to cut down either by reducing the choices of food offered, home cooking part or all, or maybe donating a portion.

LONG TERM: Charles DeWolf Middle School

Each spring, the state of New Jersey administers the NJSLA to all students in grades 3-8. The CDW students will participate as follows:

Grades 5 and 8

• Students in grades 5 and 8 will participate in the NJSLA for Language Arts, Math, and Science between May 8th and May 18th.

Grades 6 and 7

• Students in grades 6 and 7 will participate in the NJSLA for Language Arts and Math between May 8th and May 12th.

All students in grades 5-8 will need headphones or earbuds, which cannot be wireless, for these assessments. If your child does not have a pair of headphones or earbuds at school, please send in a pair from home.

The only electronic device students are permitted to use during NJSLA is their school-issued Chromebook. If your child has a cell phone, smartwatch, or any other electronic device, it will need to be turned off and in his/her locker during the testing sessions.

The purpose of the Women's Equality Day Art Exhibit is to recognize the artistic achievement of students and to increase their awareness of the importance of the equality of women. The Art Exhibit is open to students in Grades K-8 in Bergen County. Entries are due by Friday, April 28, 2023 between 9:00 AM-4:00 PM.

Art will be displayed virtually on the County's social media platforms on August 26, 2023. An in-person ceremony will be held later in September to announce the Grand Prize winners. Please see the flyer below or the attachment for more information.

The Teen Arts Festival is May 19th, and Ms. Watters is accepting original 2-D artworks to display at the festival. Ten artworks will be chosen to display. Grade 7 and 8 students who are interested can submit their artwork to Ms. Watters no later than May 9th!

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.
