Drawing on Walls : A Story of Keith Haring
The life and work of Keith Haring, a mural artist, detailing his childhood, education, and career. Describes his activism within the LGBTQ+ community & his commitment to sharing art with children around the world.
Nature Dazzles
In this documentary, children and teachers were interviewed at The Grove Community School in Toronto during Gender Splendor week in April 2017. The film shows the children engaged in workshops designed for both non-binary-conforming and cisgender-identifying children. Suggesting that this progressive approach should be adopted in all schools to increase awareness of violence against LGBT children and teens, the goal of the film is to sensitize viewers to the struggles this group of children experiences in the educational system.
Queer: The Ultimate LGBT Guide for Teens
Teen life is hard enough with all of the pressures kids face, but for teens who are LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender), it's even harder. When do you decide to come out? To whom? Will your friends accept you? And how on earth do you meet people to date?
Queer is a humorous, engaging, and honest guide that helps LGBT teens come out to friends and family, navigate their new LGBT social life, figure out if a crush is also queer, and rise up against bigotry and homophobia.
Professional Books
Queer : A Graphic History (CIN1904)
Though not a graphic novel, this high illustrated nonfiction book explores how we came to view sex, gender and sexuality in the ways that we do. Barker and Scheele show how these ideas get tangled up with our culture and our understanding of biology, psychology and sexology; and how these views have been disputed and challenged. Each page focuses on a specific aspect of the subject.
A Culturally Proficient Response to LGBT Communities-- A Guide for Educators (CIN1902)
Positive systemic change begins when leaders propel schools toward diverse-friendly environments. Build welcoming, safe spaces through this inside-out analysis of cultural proficiencies, policies, and practices.
LGBT Youth in America's Schools (CIN1900)
"Jason Cianciotto and Sean Cahill, experts on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender public policy advocacy, combine an accessible review of social science research with analyses of school practices and local, state, and federal laws that affect LGBT students. In addition, portraits of LGBT youth and their experiences with discrimination at school bring human faces to the issues the authors discuss."--Publisher's website.
