FY 24 Budget
This week the Board tentatively approved the FY 24 Budget. I am thrilled to share that the tentatively approved budget includes a $2,000 raise for all employees and a step for all eligible employees. In addition, we were able to maintain current staffing at all elementary schools and increased staffing at the middle and high schools. I would also like to thank the team of parents who surveyed the community and presented the results to the Board. This extra effort ensured the priorities of the community were centered in the budgeting process. You can listen to a recording of the Budget Town Hall here, and you can read more about the FY budget here.
Congratulations! Great job! Way to go!
DHS Creative Writing Students Publish 2023 Literary Magazine
This year, DHS had 85 students contribute their writing, artwork, and production process skills to the 185-page literary magazine, The Language of Flowers. The students did a phenomenal job turning in submissions, designing the layout, copying and editing, and creating artwork for the magazine. Special thanks to Mira Donsky and Soph Davis for putting the final layout together. Click here to view the full lists of student contributors. Way to go students and Creative Writing teacher Frances Wilson!
BHMS 8th Grader Gavin Messer Wins Frank Ski Kids Foundation-Green Science Trip Contest
Congratulations, Gavin Messer, on being selected as a Frank Ski Kids Foundation-Green Science Trip Contest Finalist! Gavin’s essay on climate change earned him an opportunity of a lifetime. As a finalist in the Frank Ski Kids Foundation-Green Science Trip contest, he and only 7 other participants moved on to win an all-expense paid trip to Galapagos, Ecuador, to study the effects of climate change. This is a huge accomplishment for Gavin as he bravely orally presented and defended his positions on this topic in front of several panelists. What a great way to demonstrate the IB Learner Profile trait of Risk-Taker. Way to go, Gavin! We are so proud of you!

Intern Hiring Event
Our DHS Work Based Learning Program, DHS Career Academy, and CSD Counselors hosted an amazing Intern Hiring Event. We partnered with several community organizations to offer internships and on-the-spot job offers to DHS students. Several community organizations, including City Schools of Decatur, were happy to be a part of this effort to help prepare our students for jobs and careers in a variety of fields. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect and collaborate with the community! Special thanks for the support of Terra Smiley, Duane Sprull, Kimberly Jones, and CSD staff, who spearheaded the event!

Top Dog Award Winners
Our Top Dog Award Winner this week is Jeanne Renaux!
Jeanne Renaux, Kindergarten Teacher at Westchester Elementary, received this nomination from a parent:
Ms. Renaux hosted the Stories Alive! event at Westchester Elementary that taught all children in the school about the art of storytelling. She spearheaded a wonderful live event for the students and parents that went above and beyond! The staff and teachers at Westchester brought several students' stories to life, with shadow puppets, costumes, live music, and singing. It was an absolute blast - so creative, the students were incredibly engaged and excited. Ms. Renaux clearly spent a lot of 'off hours' building puppets and putting together the show, and then hosting it. This is all outside of her normal job as a Kindergarten teacher, in which she could deserve another nomination!
Way to go, Jeanne!

Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.
