Matt Tobin sat down with Rockland Works Coordinator of Business and Employer Services Rich Gore to discuss interview tips and what Hotel Nyack seeks in a strong candidate.

Q) What do you look for in a job seeker during an interview?

A) We like candidates who have a big personality. Hospitality is all about being personable. A great smile and good eye contact are key. We look for individuals who are genuine, enthusiastic, and have drive. You don’t necessarily need experience in the field, as many of our jobs have cross-function skills that carry over.

Q) What are some of the key value propositions of your brand which employees need to reflect?

A) Hyatt is all about caring for our guests so they can be their best, and Hotel Nyack wants to be empathetic to our guests’ needs and compassionate when dealing with issues. Hyatt also gives back to the community, so Hotel Nyack loves utilizing local food purveyors, working with local vendors, and hiring local talent. We recently did a community cleanup to make the neighborhood a little cleaner!

Q) What are some of the paths for a candidate to grow with Hotel Nyack?

A) We have several programs to help individuals learn and grow within the hotel, including in-person and online training tools, shadowing department heads, and mentor programs within our company. We recently promoted a Front Office Manager to Assistant GM, an F&B supervisor to F&B Manager, a bartender to Sales Coordinator, and our Sales Coordinator to Sales Manager. We are all about internal growth.
