Henry Hawk News
Week of September 7, 2021 (Happy Labor Day 9/6/21)
A Message From The Principal
Dear Henry Families,
We had a very successful first week of school. It was so great to see everyone and how happy the students are being back. We want to assure you that we are making sure our students are following the health protocols. Each day, the students are getting better at the routines and are doing a great job following our health protocols throughout the building. Please be sure to remind your child the importance of keeping their masks over their nose and mouth. Also, please remember to have your child bring a water bottle to fill since they are not able to drink out of the water fountains.
We want to remind everyone that due to our the health and safety of the school, parents and visitors can only enter and exit the main door (number 2) on St Louis Ave. At this time, parents are not allowed to go to the classrooms without an appointment. Please know that the safety and health of our students is our number one concern.
Earlier this week you received a number of forms that needed to be filled out. It is really important that forms are returned as soon as possible. Thank you to those who have already completed and returned the forms. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We will update everyone on when to pay your school fees. At this time, the EPay on our website has the incorrect amount. Next week, we will send an update on when and how to pay your school fees. Thank you for your patience.
Remember that this Monday is Labor Day. School will not be in session. Please review below in our newsletter the travel update.
Have a relaxing and safe Labor Day weekend!

A message from CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We were thrilled to welcome students back to school this week, and we want you to know that our top priority will be keeping them healthy and safe. To do this successfully, we must abide by the latest travel guidelines from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), especially as we head into the busy Labor Day weekend.
In accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CDPH announced earlier this week that every U.S. state except Vermont is now a part of the city’s travel advisory. Here’s what this means for your family:
- The CDC recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated;
- Unvaccinated persons who leave the state of Illinois (this includes all children 11-years-old and younger who are not yet eligible for the vaccine) should self-quarantine for 7 days after returning to Chicago, even if they have received a negative COVID test; AND
- Unvaccinated students who leave the state should not come to school during their self-quarantine period, which is 7 days if they receive a negative COVID test or 10 days if they do not test
- Vaccinated travelers are not required to self-quarantine or test unless they develop symptoms if traveling within the United States
If you have an unvaccinated student, please reconsider your travel plans given this guidance. If your student must travel, please follow the advice above and report the absence to your school so that it can be marked as excused. Then, after one 24-hour school day period, your student will be provided with access to take-home schoolwork that will help them keep pace with their learning during the 7-10 days they are home.
Per our original guidance, only those students who have been told to quarantine or isolate by CPS’s Office of Student Health and Wellness because they are a close contact, or who have been told to quarantine or isolate by a state or local public health department, will have access to synchronous remote instruction (i.e., the ability to join their classroom live via Google Meet) and be marked present (virtually) at school. If your student falls into this category, they will receive access to simultaneous instruction one 24-hour school day period after you notify your school of their quarantine or isolation.
Please stay safe and do not travel unless it is absolutely necessary. Please contact your school directly with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
José M. Torres, PhD

Estimados padres y tutores,
Cordialmente,

Student Covid Testing Registration
Dear Henry Parent/Guardian,
Welcome back to an exciting and promising school year! As part of the district’s efforts to ensure the safety of our students, we are partnering with Thermo Fisher Scientific and Color Health to provide all students with COVID-19 testing beginning September 1, 2021 for the school year through the ReadyCheckGo™ testing program.
If you are interested in having your child participate in testing, please follow this link https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=tf-hen-609988-students and complete the registration process. A parent or guardian must register any minor under 18 years old, and you’ll give a one-time consent and HIPAA authorization to share your child’s results with the school and district.
Testing is optional for students, except for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated student athletes. Testing will take place during regular school hours and results will be available in 24 to 48 hours. Color Health will follow up with you directly if your child receives a positive result.
For more information on testing with Thermo Fisher and Color, including self-swab testing and receiving results, head to their Support FAQs or call 888-603-1028. You may also email the CPS COVID-19 Testing Team at covidtestingcps@cps.edu.
Thank you for your participation to keep our school community safe and healthy.

STAR 360 Testing 5th-8th Grade Wednesday, September 8th
Star 360 assessments are computer-adaptive tests that measure student achievement on reading and math skills. As a student takes the assessment, the assessment selects
items based on the student’s responses. If the student answers the item correctly, the
assessment increases the difficulty level of the next item. If the student answers incorrectly, the
assessment lowers the difficulty level of the next item. By continually adjusting the difficulty
of an item to what the student has shown she can or cannot do, the assessment is tailored to
accurately measure each student’s level of achievement.
This week, 5th through 8th grade will be taking the reading assessment on Wednesday, September 8th. If your child is in 5th through 8th grade, please be sure that they eat a good breakfast as well as sleep early the night before to ensure that they are ready for the reading assessment.
