Thank you Officer Sanders for all you do to keep our school and the community safe!
News From the Classroom
Preschool
During the month of March, preschoolers will learn how to properly take care of themselves. They will learn about healthy foods and habits. The children will be introduced to Lively Letters i, x, and y and practice letters m, n, l, r, u, s, z, w and j. Preschool will continue to learn about Phonemic Awareness through our Heggerty Program. We will continue to learn our four basic shapes (circle, square, triangle and rectangle). The children love their weekly lessons with Mrs. Crawford and exercise group with Ms. Nancy. During centers and recess time, the children love engaging in cooperative play.
Kindergarten
ELA: Our next Module is titled, "Home of the Free and the Brave." Students will explore the essential question, "What makes the USA special?" Through stories and read alouds, students will meet some of our great leaders and discover unique symbols of our country. They will also explore different landscapes and diverse people that contribute to making the USA special.
Math: Students will begin to work with numbers within 20. They will answer "How many?" questions and count out groups within 20. They will build an understanding that numbers 11-19 are composed of one group of ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones. For instance, the number 17 can be composed or decomposed to one ten and seven ones. They will also work on mastering writing their numbers from 11-20.
Science/Social Studies: Kindergarteners will continue to explore animal habitats. Specifically, the habits of wolves and owls. Along with their discovery, they will learn about how these animals live within their habitat and what makes each animal special. Structured play centers such as building a woodland habitat in block center and exploring the importance of the animal features in Discovery Table are among the several activities that kindergarteners will get to participate in.
First Grade
In first grade, we are really working hard! We are beginning new units in both reading and social studies. We will read stories about the great outdoors and learn about how things in nature change. As writers, we will even try writing poems about nature! We will then learn about geography, maps, and landforms.
In math, we are finishing up our unit on two-digit numbers and strengthening our understanding that numbers are composed of tens and ones. We will then move into our new unit where we will use this place value knowledge to add one- and two-digit numbers within 100.
We continue to reinforce the CARES expectations and are always looking for our first graders to be role models and leaders to their peers!
Second Grade
ELA: In ELA, we are beginning a new module focused on what plants need to grow, thrive, and survive. We will read texts about what plants need to survive, how these needs can be met, and what happens if they are not met. Students will also write a procedural text that describes chronological steps to follow to complete an activity.
Math: In math, we have begun Unit 6. This unit includes a number of different skills in the areas of geometry, time, and money. Students will reason with shapes and their attributes, and partition shapes into equal pieces. This will help to build students' foundation for working with fractions in later grades. Students will use their understanding of fourths, quarters, and skip-counting by 5 to tell time. We also will review coins and their values and practice solving story problems about money.
Science: We will soon move onto our next unit in science. This unit marks the beginning of our work in the areas of ecosystems and biodiversity! Students will explore how plants and animals depend on their surroundings to meet their needs. They will also investigate different habitats to make observations and comparisons about the different types of plants and animals found in different habitats.
1st graders from Ms. Conchieri's class went back to their Kindergarten class (Mrs. Schindel) to read to her class! Great job girls!
