Winter Registration Process
Winter Registration begins in Seminar October 14. Here are the steps to follow:
- Attend Seminar for "Things to Consider" lesson, group and individual Registration instruction.
- Friday October 14th OCC Schedule opens: students not in Seminar on this date attempt to find first choice classes and back-up options.
- Students fill out registration form, scan (no pictures) email to Mrs. DeYoung OR turn in to Mrs. DeYoung in Seminar.
- Registration forms due by Friday October 21st at 3PM in order to take advantage of priority scheduling (being able to schedule prior to other students).
Need Advice before Registration: See an OCC Counselor
We strongly suggest students make appointments with OCC Counselors between the dates of October 14-20th.
This will allow students the opportunity to have independent time with OCC counselors to discuss their degree and transfer credit questions. OCC Counselors will attend Seminar the week of October 17th. However, in the larger group setting of Seminar it is not always possible to get detailed questions answered.
We suggest making appointments with the following counselors:
Scott Kokotovich
Mary Thomas
Rasheedah Wright
Michael Zelinski
Penny McKenzie
Edward Stotts
Students can go into their MyOCC Account under Academic Profile and schedule an appointment through email, phone, zoom, or in person. If you communicate by email note that you are an Oakland ACE student.
Week Six Progress Checks
Knowing if students are passing classes in college is complicated for several reasons:
- Professors have no standardized timeline to grade material or post grades
- Professors weight graded items differently such as homework, quizzes, labs and assessments
- Professors may wait until the middle or end of classes to enter the bulk of graded work This can cause a student to appear to be passing classes until the final week or after the class is over.
- Professors may wait to put zeros in for missing graded work which can also have the effect described above.
All this is not to say anything negative about professors. One benefit to this program happens in weekly Seminar as students are guided on navigating these and other grading situations.
We encourage parents and guardians to:
- Talk with students about progress.
- Ask students to log into their D2L account and show you any posted grades.
- Discuss how grades are weighted in each class.
- Discuss how students are performing on graded items.
- Discuss the skills students are gaining in recovering from grade setbacks.
As a disclaimer to the progress updates you receive, we want to ensure parents and guardians understand these grades are self reported and many factors influence final grades in college classes.
