We are grateful for our community police officers for including us in their training this school year. Our students will be able to hear presentations about bullying and stranger danger in April.
EOEL: Happy Squash Soup
by Mrs. Angelica
Our class has been taking such great care of our garden that we grew our very first squash! We loved going out to check on it each day to see how big it was getting, and also worked together to make sure that our garden beds were getting enough water! We decided to harvest it and make a soup that students named "Happy Squash Soup!" We discussed each ingredient and wrote out the recipe together to hang in our pretend center's kitchen! Each student got to try a cup, and some even asked for seconds! We loved getting to experience growing our own food and can't wait to grow more!
Kindergarten: 100 & 101 Days of School
by Ms. Brooks
Kindergarten had so much fun the last week of school. They celebrated the 100th day of school and also the 101 day of school. They dressed like they were 100 and then dressed like 101 Dalmatians! Both days were filled with fun activities.
First Grade: Companion Plants
by Mrs. Lee
First graders learned about companion plants as they did their Aina in the School lesson. We learned that the buddy plants are tomato and basil, lettuce and radish, beans and carrots, and marigold and nasturtiums. We got our garden bed ready and planted all of these seeds. We worked together and canʻt wait for our garden to grow.

H.I.C Prime Event at Maili Point
Girls Shortboard 11 and under Division
At Maili Point on the west side of Oahu, I entered a surf contest. It was a hard competition because the conditions were crazy, it was windy, and it was rainy to the point where I could not see anything. It was supposed to be a 20 minute heat but it turned into 45 minutes. Me and all the girls were very confused because they paused the heat. We also could not hear anything, but I still just kept catching waves until the next heat pulled out after 45 minutes. When we got to the beach, I thought I got second or 3rd place. When he started announcing, I ended up getting first. I was so happy because I got a big trophy!
Congratulations Canefire Robotics
Saturday, January 20th, was our last robotics event of the regular season ... and what an event it was! I think the theme that day was all about overcoming adversity. Congratulations to the 5th graders for persevering through a slow start and finishing second overall. Also to the 6th graders for their strong performance, despite not having their "field general". Thank you to Mrs. Yamakawa, Mrs. Dolan, and Mrs. Tuvera for assisting our kids. Up next is the State Championship on Saturday, February 17th, at Ewa Makai Middle School.
Mahalo,
Mr. Haiola

Vision Screening
Project Vision Hawaii is coming to our school on February 26, to screen our students. If you would NOT like to participate, please send back the Opt-out form that went home with your child. If you would like to participate, there is nothing that you need to do.
The vision program consists of two parts:
1. Free vision screening using an eye chart and autorefractor, coordinated by PVH.
2. If your child does not pass the initial screening, VTL will provide a trained and licensed optometrist to perform a vision exam on your child. Glasses will be prescribed and fitted if needed.
Following the vision exam, if your child needs glasses he/she will have the opportunity to pick from a variety of frames, and glasses will be ordered for your child. The vision exam and eyeglasses are available to all students who need them, with no out-of-pocket cost to parents or children.
If you have any questions, please contact us.
