2nd Semester Field Trips
Washington Junior High field trips are in full swing. Some of our students attended the BGSU sponsored STEM field trip and others visited the Mazza Museum at the University of Findlay. In April and May students will visit the Metroparks or join The Amazing Race at the Toledo Zoo.
If you haven't done so yet please complete the Returning Student Registration on InfoSnap. You can find this on our district website at www.wls4kids.org, click the "Families" tab and scroll down to the Parent Powerschool login. Once in powerschool, click on the "Reutrning Student Registration" link on the left to begin. This is where you give permission for your student to attend field trips. If you have questions about this, please call Mrs. Laser at 419-473-8451 or Mrs. Sifuentes at 419-473-8468.
WJHS is very excited to be able to give kids choice in their 8th grade filed trip experience and that we will be able to offer these experiences at no cost to you!
Thank you very much to our WLS Curriculum Department and to our WJHS Family Forum for covering the cost of these trips. Our students really appreciate everything you do for them!
School Attendance
Start the New Year with a Strong Commitment to improving school attendance.
It's never too late to start learning!
Homework Help
Monday and Wednesday: Mrs. Swartz in room 109 or Mr. Jakubowski in room 201
Tuesday and Thursday: Ms. Johns in room 217 or Mrs. Bosch in room 104.
The location of Homework Help is announced daily.
Chromebook Monitoring
Washington Local Teachers now have access to a Chromebook management tool called Lightspeed Classroom, which gives teachers the ability to:
See views of student browsing activity and status
View student screens in real time, pull browsing histories, and record device activity
Send quick messages (e.g., “Are you done?” and “Need help?”) and receive replies from students
Lock device screens and send content links
Limit student web access to a website or group of websites for the class period, and release students when they change their status to “done.”
The use of Lightspeed Classroom by teachers is restricted to school hours only
Devices
Please remember if students bring a device to school (cell phone, smart watch, air pods, headphones) they are the sole responsibility of the student. Our policy states that should a student bring these devices to school they are to be turned off and stored in their locker during the school day. We are learning more and more about the anxiety produced by devices and social media. Our goal is to support healthy lifelong learners!
WJHS Family Forum
Thank you to our Family Forum for your hard work putting together our Panther Prowl to help raise money for our spring field trip! It was such a nice day to get outside and walk!!!!
The next Family forum meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 in the Washington Junior High Learning Lab at 6pm. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
Thanks for all your support!!
Notes From the School Nurse
Welcome to the second semester.
This month I wanted to address asthma in the newsletter as colder weather is often problematic for our students with a diagnosis of asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children. About 1 in 11 school-aged children have asthma and it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Asthma symptoms and triggers vary from one person to another. Colder temperatures, pollen and other outdoor allergies are triggers for some while respiratory illness can be a trigger for others. Some children have symptoms only occasionally while others have symptoms almost all of the time. With proper control of asthma, children should have minimal or no asthma symptoms.
Asthma symptoms include coughing, wheezing, restlessness, irritability, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Asthma is often treated with controller medications (also known as preventive or maintenance medications) which are taken on a daily basis to maintain control of persistent asthma. These medications can be inhaled or in tablet form. Asthma is also treated with quick-relief medications (also known as rescue or reliever medications) which are used to quickly relieve symptoms.
The goal of asthma management is to maintain normal lung function, normal activity, prevent
troublesome symptoms and recurrent episodes. When asthma is not controlled properly, it can cause increased absences from school and night-time episodes which interfere with alertness the next day. Asthmatic children that are symptom-free are better able to be in school and be ready to learn. If your son or daughter has asthma it is important that the school is aware of it. It is also important that quick-relief medication is available at school if it has been ordered by your doctor. An asthma action plan can be created with your health care provider so we can assist with asthma management at school.
Please contact me for an asthma action plan or with any questions:
