Tuesday, September 5 "Independence Day" Students Only Enter Gates at Drop Off
Dismissal 2:00 pm Grades TK/K
3:05 pm Grades 1-3
3:10 pm Grades 4-5
3:15 pm Grades 6-8
Starting Tuesday, September 5, only students will be allowed to enter the gates in the morning. Gates open daily at 8:15 am. The picture above shows the gate and the "wait zone" by grade level. Please discuss the morning plan with your child, for example, if you expect them to get breakfast and remind them where to wait before the bell. Entrance Gates are locked promptly at 8:55 am (MS) and 9:00 am (elementary). Late arrivals need to report to the front door by the Administration Building for a tardy pass. Please make every effort to have your child arrive early to school.
For pick up, please plan to meet your child at the designated gate. Grades 1-5 will dismiss from along the fence at the parent/visitor parking lot. Middle School students will dismiss from the staff parking lot gate. All TK/K students need to be signed out from the classroom by the parent or approved emergency contact; ID is required.
**See bell schedules below for start and dismissal times**
All students will receive a free breakfast and lunch at the cafeteria. Breakfast is offered between 8:15-8:45 every morning. Students will go to their designated wait zone after breakfast. All students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and to stay hydrated. Keep in mind, all classrooms are air-conditioned and a light sweater may be helpful. Sun hats and caps are permissible outdoors only.
Please be patient and exercise caution during drop off and dismissal. We are working to improve the flow of traffic, especially in the visitor parking lot/valet zone on Victoria St.

Think Straight A's
Attitude, Attendance, Achievement
Thank you for planning to get your child to school on-time, in uniform and prepared to learn every day this year. At Powell, we value parents/guradians as the first, most important teachers in the life of a child. We are your partner on their journey through Powell, into high school, college, careers and beyond. Please set high expectations for your child's Attitude, Attendance and Achievement. Together, we can ensure they achieve success!

Powell Uniforms
All students are expected to wear uniforms. School uniforms are a way to build a positive learning community and send the message that our students are here to learn and concentrate on their education. The uniform at Powell consists of:
- Navy blue or black shorts, pants, skirts, shorts or jumpers
- White, red or blue shirts with collars
- Powell Spirit Wear shirts may be worn any day
Middle School students will be expected to wear their school ID and lanyard every day.
We are ordering two FREE uniforms for all students from the generous donors of the LB Assistance League. Mr. Arreola, counselor, is gathering sizes for each student and will be sending home a hard copy of the Assistance League uniform order this week.

Powell School Site Council
Powell is in the process of electing new members to the School Site Council (SSC) for the 2023-2024 school year. SSC reviews and updates Powell's Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) including expenditures of funds. The SSC must develop, approve, and recommend the plan to the local governing board for approval, monitor its implementation and evaluate the effectiveness at least annually. Members of the SSC include the principal, three teachers, one other school staff member, and five parents. Members of the SSC are elected by their peers, therefore parents are elected by parents. A member serves for two years. This year, Powell must elect three parents to the SSC. Please consider joining the Powell SSC to be a part of our continuous improvement. Meetings are held once a month on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm. If you are interested in nominating yourself for SSC, please submit this nomination form by September 15, 2023. Elections will be held at Back to School Night on September 21, 2023.
Remember, this is just a nomination form; the parent election will determine the 3 new elected parents.
Mental Health Matters
The mission at the Powell Wellness Center is to empower Middle School students to promote and manage their own social, emotional, and physical health while striving to support all areas of their lives that may impact their academic potential. Click here for the September Newsletter
Family Literacy/Exploration
Did you know that Eagles are thriving in Big Bear, CA? The most-watched Big Bear eagle nest is home to bald eagles Jackie (10) and Shadow (8). It is estimated that the nest is about 120 feet high, very near the top of a Jeffrey pine tree. Eagles mate for life and produce 1-3 eggs per year. You can check out the live web cam via Youtube and have fun expanding your knowledge of eagles!
