Daily Physical Activity
Daily physical activity (DPA) refers to the planned and spontaneous physical activity that people do on a daily basis, for example, walking, sports, gardening, running or jogging, household chores, active games and play, and stretching. Being physically active on a daily basis is crucial to the health and wellness of all Canadians, especially children. For healthy growth and development, children and youth need at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity (e.g., brisk walking) and 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity (e.g., running, soccer) each day. Participation in physical activity contributes to physical, academic, mental and social well-being, providing benefits to the individual and the community.
How does EJSMS contribute to your children's levels of DPA?
EJSMS is very fortunate to have a Physical Education specialist who provides students with two 30 minute classes of detailed instruction each week. Classroom teachers also get the students moving daily in a variety of ways that promote healthy living, physical development, and increased attention to academics. For example, teachers might take students outside to play or go for a walk. Within the classroom, students engage in anything from dancing to cup stacking to yoga, all in the interest of promoting healthy habits of active living. As well, each class has an assigned gym time beyond the PE teacher's time with classes. The students also play hard during their 37 minutes of outdoor play time each day.
