Family Message — Sunday, November 26, 2023
Good afternoon everyone!
Empowering Our Spartans
Coming out of the gratitude holiday, we want to reiterate how thankful we are for all of our Spartans and their families!
With 17 days before winter break, we want to remind you that daily routines are essential for reducing stress and creating a sense of security for students and adults.
Please take steps to keep your child healthy and send them to school unless they are truly sick. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers.
We thank:
· Our students and their families who do their best to show up to class every day even when it isn’t easy.
· Our teachers who have gone above and beyond to help make school a welcoming learning environment where students can thrive.
· Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.
As we look forward to the next 17 days of school, we want to make sure our Spartans understand that every minute counts toward vital learning. Attendance matters--as well as being present and ready to learn each and every class period.
● If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to Amy Hart, our SSA, or Jayde Piggott and Christy Thompson, our counselors, for help.

Spartan Staff Spotlight
Spartan Staff Spotlight
This week we are shining the light on the rest of our office staff, Gabi Braley and Cathy Cozza.
Mrs. Braley (left), started last February as our athletic secretary. She greets students, staff, and family each day. Prior to working at our school she subbed in the district and worked in the banking industry.
She loves interacting with all of the students on a daily basis and getting to know our Spartan families. Outside of school she loves to read and walk on the beach.
Ms. Cozza (right) is our attendance secretary. She previously worked as the secretary for our maintenance department and at Boeing.
She loves her coworkers at Stanwood MS and the fun everyone has. Outside of school she enjoys time with her grandkids and friends.

Keep up the routine of attendance this year
We pride ourselves on being a welcoming place for our students each day — and we're excited to see everyone back in the classroom on Monday!
However, we are still seeing higher-than-normal absenteeism among our students as we continue to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Please take steps to keep your child healthy and send them to school unless they are truly sick.
Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers. It is essential to encourage the best possible attendance. Good attendance, of course, leads to strong academic growth.
If your family or your child needs support, please reach out us at school or visit our website for links to family resources, health supports, and more.
More ways to learn about our levy
Last week, the district launched a weekly informational newsletter that delves deeper into different aspects of our upcoming replacement levy. Read the first in the series of levy newsletters HERE.
The district's goal is to provide factual information for voters.
In addition, there are several in-person public levy information sessions remaining on the calendar between now and Election Day on Feb. 13. You can rewatch our event from this past Monday on our Facebook page.
YMCA wins grants to help local students
The Stanwood-Camano YMCA has been awarded a grant from Island County Grant, which will specifically aid youth who live on Camano Island.
This grant enables the YMCA to provide Teen Memberships, Teen Programming, Teen Swim/Sport Lessons, and more to those who qualify. The YMCA said supporting the health, social development, and overall well-being of local youth is a strong investment in the future of our community.
To be eligible for these benefits, students must be residents of Camano Island and be between 6th graders through 12th graders who are 17 years old."
For more, contact the YMCA at ymca-snoco.org/connect

All students will wait in the foyer, or cafeteria if eating breakfast, until our bell rings at 7:25 a.m. When the bell rings at 7:25 a.m. students will go straight to class. On regular schedule days students go straight to 1st period, on Wednesday students will go straight to our Spartan Space (Advisory).
Routines and Expectations at Stanwood Middle School
You will see below we have included expectations we have developed for classrooms, the cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms, the library, our outside areas, and the bus lane before and after school. we will review all of these with students throughout the first week.
In addition to what is listed below, we don't allow hats, hoods, gum chewing or cell phone usage from 7:25 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. We will talk with students about these expectations during the first week as well.
During the first day of school Holly Christmas, our Assistant Principal, Jayde Piggott, our Counselor, and myself will be visiting every classroom twice. We will first walk around in the morning to introduce ourselves to every student and make sure we answer questions about lunches, schedules and anything else that will make students comfortable on their first day. We will again visit every classroom after lunches to talk about bus and pickup procedures for students after school.
