The 8th graders have been busy applying the work they do in their classes to real world applications. This past week we made playdough in class, as a STEAM activity, in order to gain a better understanding of the volume of solids. We used the playdough to help us derive the formula for the Volume of a Sphere. We also learned some valuable measuring skills.

On Wednesday we were able to participate in our monthly yoga session to help us become more mindful and present for learning.

Be looking for a detailed email coming from Michelle Shepardson regarding the end-of year activities that we have been planning for our 8th graders.

We are in need of some coordinators and donations for these upcoming activities that will help us round out and celebrate their last days of Middle School!

Students exploring the Wheel of Theodorus! We are celebrating the intersection of art and mathematics! Students use their knowledge of Pythagorean Theorem to create the Wheel of Theodorus which is made of right triangles with irrational roots as the hypotenuse.

7th Graders are producing and hosting their own shows.
We are almost done recording the shows. Their next step will be
editing! From dance to cooking, these young producers will entertain
you!

Six Millis Middle School students have had their artwork chosen for display in the upcoming Youth Art Month celebration exhibit held by the Massachusetts Art Education Association. The annual exhibit features artwork by K-12 students across Massachusetts.This year’s exhibit will be virtual and will go live on March 17. Stay tuned for the link.

Hard to believe that we are already talking about the end of the year. Although there is still plenty of school time left in the year, we wanted to provide our grade 8 families with some tentative dates for our EOY Activities. More information to come as the dates approach. If there is any cancellation of school due to inclement weather, dates may change. Please find below our tentative dates:

• June 2, 2023 Grade 8 Semi-Formal Dance (event time TBD)
• June 9, 2023 Field Day (if bad weather is predicted for 6/9, the event will be held on 6/8/23)
• June 13, 2023 Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony (event time TBD)

6th Grade Families, Progress Report Cards went home last Friday, 2/3/23. If you haven't seen it yet, please check book bags! This is a great time to turn in any missing work and finish the term strong.

7th Grade Families, mark your calendars for the 2023 STEAM Fair Open House! Student's STEAM Fair projects will be on display for family and friends to explore. We hope all will join us on Wednesday evening, March 15th from 6:30-7:30pm. More information to follow!

The following 7th grade students were recognized at the February huddle for meeting the learning standards: Nathan Sumner, Olivia Peterson, Bella Giargiari, Logan Berube, and Luke Gibbons. Congratulations!

The new goal of the month is stamina. The teachers look forward to recognizing students at the next huddle!

The 7th grade students are enjoying the flexible seating (wobble stools and roller stools) in math class granted by MERIT.

The 8th grade is busy planning end of the year activities and will be reaching out to ask for help with the Semi-formal Dance, Field Day, and Promotion in the near future. There is a form coming home that needs to be signed regarding the roll-over or reimbursement for the cancelled Trinity Theater trip. Please make sure to get the form from your child and sign it for them to bring back in to Mrs. Monaghan. Form

In honor of Black History Month, 8th graders are in the process of researching a variety of influential Black artists. Each student is currently creating an art piece in the style of the artist that they have chosen. Stay tuned for work inspired by Alma Thomas, Faith Ringgold, Esther Mahlangu, Lois Mailou Jones, Horace Pippen, Yung Jake, and more…

A comprehensive program to help parents through the often tumultuous years of 11-16. Each session also shows parents how to handle sensitive issues. Below is the covered curriculum that caregivers will engage in. They will have the opportunity to complete “Home Activities” and come back to the group the next week for support and follow up.

Things are going well here at MMS as we are in the middle of our second tri-mester. Today, we will be sending home progress reports with your students. Please check in with them and see how they are progressing in Tri-mester II.

We are 1/2 way through Term 2 and the school year. Progress reports will be going home soon. It's a great time to check in with your students to ensure they have the writing utensils they need for daily class activities. Also, please remind your students to charge their Chromebook every night!

Please be sure to send your child to school with a winter coat. We will be going outside as long as the temperature is 22 degrees or above.

7th Grade Science students are gathering evidence that attractive and repulsive forces exist!

Grade 8 Families:

As it states below, grade eight teachers are hard at work planning for the end of the year for our grade 8 students. These activities include, promotion ceremony, grade 8 dance, field day and other activities. We do have tentative dates for these activities that we will share shortly. Although our winter this year has been mild we still have a few more weeks. We will send out EOY dates to families at the beginning of March. Please also stay tuned for their volunteer request. Looking forward to a great end of year with our grade eight students!

Hours of Operation: Saturdays (10am-12pm), and also the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month (10am-12pm).

In order to shop at the pantry, all you need is proof of Millis residency, and you will be

The library just installed a new stand with an iPad for students to access our catalog. This stand was purchased thanks to the support of the Norfolk County Teachers Association.

6th grade art students looked at traditional Chinese Scroll Paintings. They created their own images and folded them into lanterns in celebration of Lunar New Year which begins on January 22.
