St. Luke Weekly Memo
February, 1 2021
Chaplin's Corner
Sometimes I’m grumpy – or selfish. Sometimes I say things that aren’t so kind. Those aren’t things I’m proud of, but I must admit I make those mistakes sometimes. In this week’s Gospel , Jesus meets a man who has an “unclean spirit.” It is almost as if there was a ghost that had taken over the man’s body and was making him act in ways that he shouldn’t have. So Jesus tells the spirit to be quiet and get out of the man’s body – and guess what? It does! It comes right out of his body. The word “spirit” can mean a ghost, like in his story – but it can also describe our attitudes – or the ways that we think. The more I thought about this story, I realized that Jesus helps me to remove unclean spirits too, just like the man in the story. And he can help you. When I’m feeling grumpy, or selfish – or I’m tempted to do or say something unkind – I try to think about what Jesus would do. And when I do, I almost always manage to change my way of thinking. I leave the wrong – or unclean – thoughts behind and replace them with better ones.
Will you try to do the same this week when you’re faced with a challenge?
Saint of The Month: St. Therese of Lisieux
At the age of 14, on Christmas Eve in 1886, Therese had a conversion that transformed her life. From then on, her powerful energy and sensitive spirit were turned toward love, instead of keeping herself happy. At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Living a hidden, simple life of prayer, she was gifted with great intimacy with God. Through sickness and dark nights of doubt and fear, she remained faithful to God, rooted in His merciful love. After a long struggle with tuberculosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: "My God, I love You!"
She loved flowers and saw herself as the "little flower of Jesus," who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God's garden. Because of this beautiful analogy, the title "little flower" remained with St. Therese.

Bell Let's Talk Day
This year’s Bell Let’s Talk Day campaign shines a light on the actions that we can all take, because now more than ever, mental health matters. Whether you’re staying virtually connected with a family member, working directly with patients in recovery, investing in access to care or even just taking care of your own mental health, every Canadian can play a part in their communities, workplaces, schools and at home. As a school community we are encouraging students and staff to show their support by wearing blue. Student's displayed messages for support for menatl health intiatives because when it comes to mental health, now more than ever, every action counts.
Shrove Tuesday is Coming! Order your Pancakes!
Shrove Tuesday is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. It is the day when we are encouraged to go to confession in preparation for the penitential season ending Easter Sunday. Lent is a time of abstinence. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent.
In the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent.
The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French name Mardi Gras; meaning fat Tuesday. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.
This year, Shrove Tuesday lunch will be catered to the students by McDonald's. To ensure that we are adhering to Alberta Health Guidelines the following items will be individually packaged.
Kindergarten to Grade 4: 3 pancakes, milk, and apple slices
Grade 5 - 8: 3 pancakes, sausage, milk, and apple slices.
Pancakes will be served at lunch tims. Students that require more lunch then the above order will need to bring additional items on this day. To assist with the ordering please complete the following form for each child no later than February 7. FORM FOR PANCAKES
