Congratulations to Hebron Middle School and Riverside Intermediate

Hebron Middle School and Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth both persevered and earned Schools to Watch redesignation this year! Hebron received their "add-ons" (temporarily attached) to their original banner during an outdoor awards ceremony on May 20, anchored by Principal Matt Beahm and students.

With delays from the pandemic, several more schools will be applying for redesignation next year, and new schools are welcome to apply! Schools to Watch is a national program from the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. See the article near the end of this newsletter for more information, and other ways you can become involved.

horace mann shining star award

Three outstanding students, Hadley Donovan, Riley Mowry-McCord, and Aleks Kennedy, received the Horace Mann Shining Star Award on May 20 during Hebron's 8th grade award ceremony. Thank you to Robin Baiel of Horace Mann, who attended the awards ceremony and presented each with a gift card. Susie Highley represented IMLEA and gave each winner a Shining Star shirt and trophy. Join our imlea board!

IMLEA has a board of trustees composed of educators from across the state, often two from each IASP district. The board meets approximately 4 times per year, and has transitioned to Zoom for most meetings, although many of us will meet in person on Monday, June 13. The board makes important decisions, such as deciding upon conferences, and includes teachers, principals, and district administrators; you or your school or district do need to be an IMLEA member. Many of our members say that the networking opportunities are their favorite part! If you are interested in joining our board, please contact Susie Highley

We shared information about the Erskine Personal Impact Curriculum (EPIC) previously, and wanted to share more information with you, as well as this excellent video. This is related to the documentary entitled "The Best We've Got: The Carl Erskine Story," which is premiering August 11 in Anderson. Carl is a 95-year-old, lifelong Anderson resident who is known primarily for his time with the Brooklyn Dodgers in baseball's "Golden Era" of the 1950s, but the film and education project focus mostly on his incredible human-rights legacy, particularly in the areas of diversity (with his childhood best friend and Jackie Robinson) and inclusion (with his son Jimmy, who has Down syndrome). This could be a great way to begin the school year! When it was piloted in a classroom recently, both teachers and students were very moved!

Horace Mann Webinars & Consultations

With changes in guidelines for student loan forgiveness, many educators have been able to reduce their debts of up to tens of thousands of dollars. In addition to already-scheduled webinars listed on their website, principals can arrange for visits or webinars to individual schools/districts. This is a great time to act! Horace Mann representatives told me that many administrators have recently taken advantage of this program in regards to advanced degrees. Check out this video for a sneak peek at what the program has to offer. For more information on how to bring this program to your school(s) click here or contact your local Horace Mann agent. (They have informational programs in addition to Student Loan Solutions, as well as offering competitive insurance rates.)

Forum Grants now open

Forum Credit Union gives $2500 grants to educators in Marion, Hamilton, Johnson, Boone, Hendricks, and Hancock Counties. Applications are now open for this year's awards. You can find examples and past recipients here. Applications are due September 1

Nominate an educator of the year

AMLE is now accepting nominations for Educator of the Year, a nationwide award open to those working full time at the middle level . To see further qualifications and access the form, visit this site. Last year's winner was Dr. Nikki Woodson, Superintendent of Washington Township in Indianapolis! The deadline for nominations and all supporting materials is July 15.

Fulbright Distinguished Teacher exchange program

Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program participants complete short-term international projects, collaborate with colleagues abroad, and share educational policy and practice on a global scale.

Participants receive funding that covers project activities including international airfare, living expenses, meals, and an honorarium for the time in country. Host organizations support participants to find housing and transportation while on site.

Modern Classroom Project trainings Still Available

The Modern Classroom Project trains teachers to employ a blended, self-paced mastery model for teaching. Ordinarily, the training costs $500 per person, but DOE and 4 education service centers are using grant funds to cover this for you. It includes 1:1 coaching, a year of support, and 30 PGPs. The next session runs July 11-August 14. Another session will be held October 17-January 15, 2023. Deadline to apply is June 10. More information and the Indiana application are available here.

Apply for Grants for State Park Field Trips

Educators interested in taking K-12 students on field trips to an Indiana state park or state-managed lake in the 2022-2023 school year can receive financial help through the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF).

Grants of $250 from the Discover the Outdoors fund are available for public, private, parochial, or home-school educators. Find more information here.

2022 STEM Education Works VIRTUAL Professional Development Workshop

This workshop runs June 13-17. You will be sent everything you need to complete the work including a castle kit with a micro:bit and smart home sensors, access to the curriculum, materials, & resources to decorate your castle, and other fun surprises!

Open to middle and high school teaches. More information and the application are here. Deadline to apply is June 5.

Schools to Watch: Process and Training.

The Schools to Watch program recognizes schools with proven academic excellence while being developmentally responsive and socially equitable. It is a national program that focuses on continuous improvement, not perfection, & involves the entire staff. After the staff completes a rubric & an application is completed, eligible schools receive a site visit from other middle level educators. Many IMLEA members say that the site visits & the network created among STW is the best part of the process. This is not a one & done event! We will be holding a training later this summer for schools that would like to apply, and for educators who would like to make the site visits. The cost you ask: free! The only expense for schools is attending the national conference to receive your initial reward. Please contact Susie Highley if you are interested in any part of this or would like to learn more.
