March Meeting Recap
The monthly Board of Education Meeting was held on Monday, March 13 at the District 146 Administration Center.
The Board of Education heard the following:
- Dr. Jeff Stawick, Superintendent, reported:
- District 146 signed a user agreement for an online portal used by the Illinois State Police (ISP). The District will submit Clear and Present Danger reports, which are required by ISP, using the new portal.
- Central Middle School has a new sound board. Multiple staff members across the District will be trained to use the equipment.
- Fulton School will be recognized by the Village of Tinley Park on April 18 for their fundraising on behalf of PAWS Tinley Park. The fundraiser was part of their Name the Mascot contest.
- The District hosted its second Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee and Community ESL Event on March 1. Participants practiced their social English skills through semi-structured activities and games, and had a chance to interact with their English instructors and classmates in person.
- A PTO/PTA/PACT Officer Breakfast with the Superintendent will be held on Wednesday, April 5.
- Anya Kleis, 5th Grade Kruse student and District 146 Spelling Bee Champion, took first place in the South Cook ISC Regional Spelling Bee. She will move to the next competition on March 28. The District wishes her luck.
- At the April 10th meeting, the Board of Education will recognize two CMS students who received Infinitec Outstanding Student Technology Awards for their progress with technology. The Board will also recognize three Virginia Koepel Award recipients from the District 146 Math Challenge.
- Matt Shanahan, Director of Buildings and Grounds, reported that his crew have multiple projects planned for Spring Break. In addition to detailed cleaning at each of the schools, HVAC projects, annual roof inspections, and grounds cleanup work will take place. The temporary storage units at CMS will also be emptied and scheduled for removal.
- Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services, presented the District’s five year financial forecast.
- During Public Comment, a parent addressed the Board about safety protocols. He also proposed having a police officer on the premises during the school day when children are present.
The Board took the following action:
- Approved the 2023-2024 School Calendar. Once approved by the State Board of Education, it will be released to families.
- Approved the contract with Sunrise Transportation for Special Education Transportation.
- Approved a resolution authorizing a property tax abatement in the amount of $1.7 million for Fiscal Year 2022. This is the second abatement of two required by the 2022 Property Tax Relief Grant.
- Approved a resolution authorizing a property tax abatement in the amount of $1.9 million for Fiscal Year 2023. This is the first abatement of two required by the 2023 Property Tax Relief Grant.
- Approved the honorable dismissal of teachers due a reduction in force. These staff members will be recalled if positions in their category become available.
The Board met in closed session to discuss personnel issues before adjourning.

Next Board Meeting
The Board of Education will meet for their regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2023 at the Robert Procunier Administration Center, 6611 W. 171st Street, Tinley Park.

By law, all Board discussion and deliberation must be conducted in public, except for certain matters that are exempt and may be discussed in closed session (see February’s update). All official votes and Board action must be taken in open session in public.
