Miner's Minutes-May/June 2023
March/April 2023 - www.tellurideschool.org - 970-728-4377
It can be hard to believe with snow still on the ground we are heading into the last leg of the school year. Scholarship applications are being reviewed, graduations plans being made, spring sports are underway. It is a time of looking forward; whether moving up to the next grade, to a new building or leaving our box canyon for the next life adventure.
As a Board we are also looking forward, listening to our 2 citizen groups regarding a possible bond and Rico annexation. There are a number of public forums listed in the calendar for public information and input. Please take advantage of these so we can move forward with all of your input. In May we will have our Board Spring Retreat when we look back at our Ends Goals and assess results to then look forward to set a path for next year.
It is in these times of reflection and goal setting that I am most inspired by our teachers and students. Reading scholarship applications that are so impactful, I remember why I ran for this seat. Our student’s accomplishments are noteworthy; we will all get a full accounting at Awards Night and Graduation. We just received word that the State of Colorado has noticed our district as well. We have received and will be honored on May 18th for, yet again, being Accredited with Distinction, the John Irwin Award for Telluride Middle School, as well as the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award for Telluride Elementary School and Telluride Middle School. These awards all reflect the hard work of our students, teachers and parents. I am proud to have played a part in our District’s successes, however small.
Teacher/Staff Appreciation week is May 8-12th. Please help honor and spoil our staff (each school is organizing treats and TEF is asking for donations for a gift). The board would like to personally thank all TSD teachers and staff for their for their extraordinary dedication and devotion.

The Miner School
Dan Bergstrom Noel is the program coordinator and will be running a small, personalized “school within a school” called The Miner School.
Important details:
- The Miner School begins this fall for the 2023/24 school year
- Only twelve 11th and 12th grade students will be accepted into the new program
- This is a 1-2 year graduation focused program with opportunities for credit recovery, career exploration, and concurrent college enrollment.
- Students will still access some regular classes at Telluride High School…but will also have access to Career and Technical Education classes, internships, apprenticeships, online classes, and other specialized classes related to their area of interest
- Students in The Miner School will be expected to explore some form of career or job experiences
- Students will be closely guided in all aspects of their academic, personal, and career development throughout this high school experience (and beyond).
The Miner School is an opportunity for students to find their own unique pathway to high school graduation and ultimately into a life of their choosing. We are excited to help students pursue possible interests in: early childhood education, machining/welding, health services, technology, construction/trades, outdoor education, agriculture/forestry, entrepreneurship, and possibly more.
We are excited to begin this work with our students and the greater community.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week: We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and caring teachers & staff in the Telluride School District. They always go above and beyond to ensure our kids are learning, engaged, and supported in school.
So let's show our love for them during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week, May 8-12. We are asking for donations so the Telluride Education Foundation (TEF) can purchase $50 Clark’s gift cards for every teacher and staff member in the district + provide chair massages at school during Appreciation Week. Everyone has really appreciated these gifts in past years so let's do it again!
We would like to raise $10,000 again to cover this expense. No contribution is too large or too small. Please show your love.

Student & Staff Spotlights
5th Graders experiencing TASP is a strong example of the TIS vision in action; of course, it was even more moving with Mr. Dan as their instructor. Congrats Erin, Sherri, Maria, and Ailish! Also congrats to Angela for the Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Tempest.
Spanish Spelling Bee: Congratulations to Emma Dominguez de La Torre Martinez and Keaton Koenig on their success in the State Spanish Spelling Bee over spring break. Emma finished 2nd and Keaton 5th.
Battle of the Books: At TIS, we have two teams. Our elementary team has students from 4th and 5th grade, and our middle school team was comprised of 6th graders this year. Fifth grade teacher Erin Murray is the coach for the elementary team, and Lisa Rutlege is coach of the middle school team. Each team has a list of 38 books to read over the year! Our regional competition was held in Norwood this year, with teams from Ridgway and the West End. One exciting moment that had us all at the edge of our seats was when Theo Brooks challenged a question, claiming that the book they had given as an answer was correct. Theo found the exact sentence in the book that he felt met the requirements of the question, but the challenge was denied. Our middle school team beat the West End for the middle school trophy, and our elementary team of 5th graders this year took second place. The middle school team is going to compete in the online competition May 3rd, against teams from across Colorado! Good luck team leader: Matilda Parsons, with readers Stella Strand, Banks O’Brien, Cassidy Greene, Finn McGinty, and Barrett Prince!! Special recognition goes to Daisy Robinson who read ALL 38 books on the list!!
4th Grade Invention Fair:
Thank you to our judges Stephanie Hatcher, Annemarie Jodlowski, Marija Kramer and Olivia Pederson!

Izzy Sanders for the Keyboard Queen
