Today we took the test for the Energy unit. We are starting a new unit called Matter on Friday the 12th. In this unit we will talk about the properties of matter (solid liquid, gas) which talk about shape, volume, and mass. The tentative date for that unit test is January 31st. This is subject to change depending on student need.
We have started a new unit in SEL (social emotional learning). This one is all about emotions and how to manage them. I told the students this is the most relevant lesson for them as in middle school children have stronger emotions and it’s difficult to manage those. We talk about what’s happening in the brain during strong emotions and then once the students have a basic understanding of what’s happening it makes it easier for them to manage their emotions.
It’s about halfway through the year and students may need to have their supplies replenished. I have gone through so many pencils and paper. Most students are not coming prepared with a pencil and paper. At this point I am personally having to supply most students with a pencil and paper each day. Please talk to them and see if they need supplies. Additionally talk to your students about the importance of coming in with a charged chromebook each day. I truly appreciate the parents and students already doing this regularly. It makes it so much easier to just focus on instruction because of your dedication to your child’s education.
SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. CALDERON
Happy New Year!! We are almost done with the first semester of the school year. Last week your children demonstrated their knowledge in what we have covered so far on Ancient World History. Next week they will have to turn in an End of Semester project that will show their research and public speaking abilities. The project has been discussed in class and they have the rubric in their Canvas.
I want to take this time to ask for your help in ensuring that your child is completing their classwork, we area having a lot of missing work that they should complete in class, but if they don’t, they have to complete it at home. The time is running out for this since the last day to turn in grades is fast approaching.
We are finishing this week with Alexander the Great and his legacy. In the first weeks of the next semester, we will be shifting our focus to Asian countries and their ancient history. They will have the fun opportunity to learn how to make paper. Since we are on the subject of paper could you please make sure your children have a notebook for class and pencils. I find myself having to give them pencils and paper almost every day because they come to class unprepared. If you are already doing this, I thank you for your efforts and your continuous support.
Have an amazing week!!

Hello Families,
I trust this message finds you well. I'm excited to share some key updates and highlights from our fantastic 6th Grade class at Franklinton Middle School.
Preparation for EOGs and Unit 5 Test:
In our ongoing preparation for the EOGs, students are receiving "From the Jump" assignments every week, featuring approximately 12 questions from last year's 6th-grade EOG. I encourage you to actively engage with your students, discussing these papers and ensuring they take them home for thorough study. Mastery of these questions, along with a focus on the upcoming Unit 5 test covering decimal computations, will significantly contribute to their success in the EOGs.
From the Jump Quiz and Weekly Notes:
As part of our preparation, students are taking a From the Jump Quiz every Friday. It's crucial that they utilize their weekly notes on the From the Jump paper to enhance their understanding and performance. This consistent practice will undoubtedly make a positive impact on their overall preparedness for assessments.
Grades and Class Preparedness:
A friendly reminder for students to complete their iReady minutes and lessons. Each week, they are required to complete 60 minutes and pass 2 lessons. Consistent completion of these tasks not only benefits their grades but also enriches their overall education.
I'm pleased to report that everything has been going exceptionally well in terms of student behavior. Our students are actively engaged and making consistent progress in their schoolwork. I extend my gratitude for the continued support in this crucial aspect of their education.
Lastly, it's vital that students show up with charged chrome books, notebooks, and writing utensils prepared to start every single class every single day. This ensures a smooth and focused learning environment.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at brandonmitchell@fcschools.net. Your collaboration is greatly valued.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and I appreciate your time in reading this comprehensive update.
Best regards,
Mr. Mitchell

Greetings Families,
Happy New Year! We have been hard at work since being back in school this year. We have done a study of Steve Jobs and some of his Rules to live By in this Unit. We’ve started a new Novel: Bud, Not Buddy. This book takes place during the Great Depression. This Unit will be teaching the students about Figurative Language and Tone. Each Day a new Chapter will typically be covered, if not finished in class the students have Sora on their Chromebook and they have borrowed the book already. Please have your students stock up on supplies.Any supplies you need help with please send me an email. Some students are coming to class daily without pencils. Daily for ELA class we need a pencil, their ELA notebook and a charged Chromebook. Coming to class prepared makes it easier on everyone. Remediation has started off great and the students are taking it seriously. N.C Check Ins for Reading are next week and we are looking forward to the growth. Please continue to encourage I-Ready.
Thank you all for your continued support in your child’s education.
Any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at sharondaperry@fcschools.netGRADE 7 TEAM

Happy New Year! This month in Math seventh-grade students began Unit 4, Reasoning with Expressions. The students are learning the language of algebra. In this unit, students learn to identify and simplify equivalent linear expressions, using properties of operations to explain equivalence. Students will represent expressions with area diagrams, and use the distributive property to justify factoring or expanding an expression. This unit is short but important as it sets the foundation for Unit 5 where students will learn to solve linear equations and inequalities.
Things to remember:
Class attendance is important.
Be on your best behavior. Remember the school and classroom rules.
Bring your materials (Chromebooks(charged), notebooks, and pencils) to class daily.
Get a good night's rest and come to class prepared to work..
Math I-Ready assignments are important. (We have started a new incentive program to encourage students to complete at least 2 lessons per week.)
Believe in yourself, you can do it!

Happy New Year! In class we are going over American Imperialism and the Spanish American War. This will continue through this week and next. After this unit ends, we will get into the first World War. There will be a project assigned at the beginning of Q3 and rubrics will be sent home with students.
With the Quarter ending next week, please make sure to check Powerschool so that there are no surprises when report cards come out. Students know when work is due and should be turning in all assignments on/before the due date. Plenty of time is provided in class to complete all work and zeroes are earned by not turning in work.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at hunterjones@fcschools.net

Happy 2024, students and families! We begin the new year with a fresh start and a clean slate when it comes to both academics and behavior. We will continue to ‘set the temperature’ with strong student focus, consistency of work completion, and accountability of student work which will ensure growth among skill-sets, and overall academic success.
As Quarter two comes to a close next week on 1/19, here are a few reminders:
I will accept all late, or missing work up through Monday, 1/15 at 11:59 pm
We need to be sure to ask for any make up work or support beforehand if needed
Tutoring is always an option
It is important to meet deadlines and take accountability for our daily actions
Always try your best each day!
ELA Check-In 2 is next Wednesday, January 17th. The second round of both ELA and Math Diagnostics is the following week. Please remind students to do their best and to utilize all the strategies they have been taught in class. They got this!!
Expectations: Overall, students have done a solid job with maintaining a positive behavior in class, as well as keeping up to date with their work. I appreciate you speaking with your students about their personal and academic goals on a regular basis. Remember that each quarter every student begins with a 100% in their classes. What they decide to do with their grades and achievements are up to them.
Curriculum: Currently, we are at the mid-way point of Unit 2 with Frederick Douglass and the topics of “Slavery.” Students have been introduced and continue to learn about his background and daily life as a slave and its role within American History. The models within the unit focus on: Historical context, Author’s purpose, and Poetry. Students have read several excerpts in which they have annotated key vocabulary, located textual evidence, labeled where their answer can be found, and responded to in-depth text-based questions.
Students continue to utilize a series of skills including: color-coded annotation, a strong focus on content vocabulary, a variety of written responses, utilizing a variety of graphic-organizers, anchor texts, etc.
Q2/3 Project: Throughout Q2 and Q3 students will be writing a research paper from a series of pre-selected Social Issue topics. This week students will select a topic from those provided to them on a series of ‘Social Issues.” This week we begin the writing process by writing our introductory paragraphs. Students will ended to defend their claim (argument) about their chosen Social Issue by including a hook, gist, and claim, as well as at least one piece of textual evidence from their online sources. The project rubric and letter of intent to be signed are included below: The project due date is TBD and will be likely be due at the end of February**

Homework: Students should expect homework two to three times weekly in order to continue to develop their skill-sets and to see growth. Please ask your child what work they have for homework, or have not completed on a regular basis to help keep them on track. Work is updated regularly for access on Canvas. Grades are also updated weekly and viewable on Powerschool.
Grades: Student grades are present on Canvas, and are now viewable to students and guardians on Powerschool. Students are expected to check their grades on a regular basis and reach out to their teacher for make-up work, or additional time to complete an assignment if they have been absent. I allow a one week timeframe to make up work before an assignment becomes a zero.
I-Ready: Is a proven and resourceful data-driven program that allows teachers to see tri-annually where a student is at in their comprehension level by grade lexile. It also allows teachers to view the data and see where students have mastered a skill, and what areas need additional practice.
Students are expected to complete two passing lessons from their pathway each week. In addition, they will be assigned a “teacher assigned lessons” at times to enhance what is being taught in class, which is to be completed by the end of the week for a grade. The teacher chosen assignment will focus on a skill-set currently being taught or reviewed in class in order to strengthen a specific skill.
We are currently utilizing I-Ready incentives for every two passing lessons per ELA and Math each week. This incentive began right before the holiday break. Students have an opportunity to receive an incentive of their choice for their hard work. See the image below for more info…
Tutoring: Tutoring occurs weekly each: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00 pm in the cafeteria. Please ask your student about a tutoring contract to view and return attached below: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KHba-Ciy9XIx3mbAu6Ki7mwwocNfgA1dOxvI7Qcg3V8/edit?usp=sharing
I will be there on Mondays and Thursdays for additional support in ELA.
Students have worked hard Q2 and their efforts and growth have shown! Keep up the good work :)

SOCIAL STUDIES: MR. DOWNUM
First of all, welcome back to a brand new year at FMS. I hope that you all had a relaxing break and the students are refreshed and ready to get right back into it. The students will need to be ready because we have a full month in January. This week we are doing remediation for ELA and for science as they have their NC Check Ins next week. Next week we have a shortened week for MLK Day, followed by Science Check-Ins on the 16th, and ELA on the 17th. The quarter also ends next week, followed by Iready diagnostics the following week.
General information on the end of the quarter. I will stop taking any work next Wed. Just as a reminder the students have two weeks to do all assignments, and if not completed the assignment locks in Canvas. If the assignment is locked in Canvas that means the student is no longer able to do that work. I do not reopen assignments when they are locked. Some of the students seem to be confused so I wanted to clear up the policy on absences. Many students think that if they are absent that means they are exempt from the work assigned that day. This is not the case all students are responsible for completing any missing assignments that they miss.
In Social Studies we are starting the unit called A Nation in Crisis, which covers The Civil War and Reconstruction. We will be working our way through all of the causes of the war. I do not talk about battles in depth because I don’t think they contribute to the understanding of the war. I focus instead on why we went to war and the ramifications of the war on the state and country.
MATH: MRS. CUNNINGHAM
Happy New Year! Can you believe it is 2024 already? We only have 7 more school days until the end of quarter 2. Please ask your child if he/she is missing any assignments.
We took our unit 2a test today on Reasoning About Equations and Angles, in which we have been solving equations and inequalities with variables on one side and both sides. We also learned how to graph the inequalities on a number line.
We are moving onto unit 2b, which is still Reasoning About Equations and Angles, but in this second half of the unit the students build upon their knowledge of parallel lines from grade 6 and angle relationships from grade 7 to recognize relationships between the angles created when parallel lines are cut by a transversal. Students solve real-world and mathematical problems using equations and angles.
NC.8.G.5 Use informal arguments to analyze angle relationships.
Recognize relationships between interior and exterior angles of a triangle.
Recognize the relationships between the angles created when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.
Recognize the angle-angle criterion for similarity of triangles.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving angles.
Vocabulary
transversal, vertical angles, straight angle, supplementary angle, complementary angle, alternate interior angle, alternate exterior angle, corresponding angles, exterior angle theorem, adjacent angles, same side interior, same side exterior
Key Math Practice Standard(s)
MP3: Justify relationships between angles in a diagram.
MP6: Use precision to calculate the value of missing angles.
I Can Statements (Student Learning Targets)
I can identify congruent angles on two parallel lines cut by a transversal and use them to determine missing angle measurements.
I can observe that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees.
ELA: MS. FROST
REMINDER: Students take the NC Check-In State Benchmark for Reading on Wednesday, January 17th.
Your child will complete the second NC Check-In State Benchmark for ELA next Wednesday. Please encourage your child to take this assessment seriously; utilizing the test taking strategies we have learned in class. Scores will be shared with students and the information from the assessment will drive instruction and remediation in preparation for the End of Grade State Test for ELA (EOG). Our goal is for students to show growth in comparison to the beginning of year assessment results, as well as, proficiency!
Test Taking Strategies we have learned in class: Students are given a blank sheet of paper on the NC Check-In and the Reading EOG at the end of the year. Because students cannot take notes on the computer, the blank sheet of paper should be used to take notes. (Write a summary “Gist Statement”, list key words, use context clues, write comments, main ideas, and important details) Taking notes while reading helps readers stay focused on the test and improves the number of questions students answer correctly!
1. Preview the questions
highlight and underline the details in each question prior to reading the text.
This helps you focus on exactly what the question is asking of you as your read the text.
2. Annotate
Yes, “talk to the text” in writing on the blank sheet of paper.
3. Slash the trash
-Eliminate all of the answer choices that you know are not correct. The choice is obviously “trash!” Text evidence should support your answer choices.
RUNNERS
R - Read the title and make a prediction
U - Underline important keywords in the questions
N - Number the paragraphs in the selection
N - Now read the selection and
E - enclose and highlight keywords and clues
R - Re-read the questions
S - Select the best answer (Slash the Trash)
Friday is the last day of Quarter 2. Please check PowerSchool for current grades and missing assignments.
The Importance of I-Ready (Please click on the link below to learn how I-Ready supports and supplements reading growth for your child)
Please encourage your child to continue working on his or her Learning Pathway in I-Ready for 45+ minutes per week with a 75% or higher rate on completion of lessons.
Student Materials: More and more students are coming to class unprepared (not having a chromebook and/or a chromebook that is not charged). Please make sure your child charges his or her chromebook nightly.
Please email me at annafrost@fcschools.net

ART with Mrs. CLIFTON
Our artist finished their selfies before the holidays. I am so proud of them. Their selfies are Amazing!!
With our last few classes 8th and 6th grade are working on creating wire figures. These figures made of wire should show motion and be balanced. It has been exciting to watch them work on these and I can’t wait to share some of their completed work with you.
Our 7th graders are making baskets from scraps of fabric, with a focus on the Australian Indigenous people. They are learning how the craft of basket making has been passed down through generations and the persecution they have been through.
“Aunty Connie Hart, from Lake Condah Mission, was the ‘naughty girl’ who helped preserve traditional basket weaving. When she was a little girl living on an Aboriginal mission, practicing traditional culture was forbidden. Connie sneakily learned the traditional art of basket weaving from her elders, and later passed it on to her niece, Aunty Eileen Alberts, despite living under the threat that the children in the family would be taken away if they were ever caught. Now, Eileen and her daughters openly practice traditional weaving, and pass on the craft to anyone – Indigenous or non-Indigenous, who would like to learn.”Youtube video about Aunty Connie Hart

BAND: MS. BROWN
Happy New Year everyone!
We finished the 2023 year on a high note with our winter concert. Students performed so incredibly well and did a great job showcasing all that they have learned. If your child was NOT able to attend the concert, their makeup assignment is due on January 12th and is on Canvas. This has been available to students since before the winter break, providing ample time for them to get it finished.
As we look to a new year and are close to a new semester, please remind your students that band is a year-long class and that we are keeping it in high gear and starting to work on music for our spring concert, which will occur in May (specific date coming soon). If your child wants to switch out of band, they must have parent permission. Please discuss that with your child and discuss their options for other electives if that is the route they are wanting to go.
If your child is wanting to join band, the semester change is when they need to do that. Please email me or have your student come and talk to me so that I can give them some paperwork to fill out regarding instrument rental, expectations, etc.
Your students have done so incredibly well during semester 1 and have learned so much. I can’t wait to see all that they accomplish in semester 2!
