Just 3 more weeks unto school starts!
For all new families, welcome to Swansboro Elementary! We are excited to start a new school year!
Just a few reminders, first and foremost EVERYONE should be receiving a weekly school newsletter via email from me, Ms. Highsmith. The email contains our the same message conveyed in the weekly all call, but it also has additional information such as a list of all SBES events for the year and will often have links to important forms and such. Please make sure that you are receiving this weekly email. If you are only getting this phone call, but are not the email please reach out to Lori Jones at lori.jones@onslow.k12.nc.us or 910-326-1501.
In this week's emailed newsletter, you will find the supply list, the OCS calendar, and information regarding health and safety requirements for the reopening of schools. Just to point out a couple of these, all students, staff and visitors on campus will be required to wear masks at all times while on campus. If you could provide your child with a mask on day one, we can send home additional masks for other days. Also parents will not be allowed inside the building. If you need immediate assistance, please ring the bell at the front door and someone will assist you from there. We will also be modifying our arrival and dismissal procedures. On August 13th, you can login to our school website to see a brief video of the new procedures. This video will not be available until our virtual Orientation on August 13th as we are still planning out the details. As far as our face to face school day, students can expect the same high quality instruction as before with social distancing procedures put in place. Our students will continue to have a daily Enrichment Class (Art, Music, PE, Media, Counseling, and Harmony); however, all other extra curricular activities are on hold at this time. OCS is working diligently to establish Remote Learning expectations for the upcoming school year.
I have received quite a few emails regarding Cohort assignments. There are many factors that are taken into consideration when assigning cohorts and classes; therefore, I may not be able to accommodate all special requests. However, once cohorts and classes are assigned, we will not be able to make changes; therefore, please let me know if there are any major needs as soon as possible. The district plans to notify all families of assigned cohorts the week of August 3rd. After district notification, SBES students will receive a post card with their teacher assignment and a reminder about our VIRTUAL Orientation to be held on August 13th.
Please help us spread the word regarding kindergarten registration. Students who will reach the age of five before Aug. 31, 2020 are eligible for kindergarten. Please encourage neighbors and friends to visit the OCS website to enroll in Kindergarten. Right now our enrollment numbers are low and we really need our numbers to be accurate to ensure that we don't lose any teaching positions.
Thanks for all that you do to support our school!
Requirements for Opening N.C. Public Schools
The Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit outlines the requirements for modified Plan B. Some of the requirements include:
- Face coverings will be required for every teacher, staff member and student from kindergarten through high school. The state will provide at least five reusable face coverings for every student, teacher and staff member.
- Schools will be required to limit the total number of people in buildings so that 6 feet of distancing is possible, for example, when students are seated or in line. Districts and schools can use a plan that works for them – whether it’s alternating days or weeks or some other strategy.
- Symptom screenings, including temperature checks, will take place daily before children enter school buildings.
- Schools must create a way to isolate students who have symptoms and ensure that they can get home safely.
- Schedules must allow time for frequent hand washing and schools will regularly clean classrooms, bathrooms, buses and equipment.
- Teachers will work to limit sharing of personal items and classroom materials.
- Nonessential visitors and activities involving outside organizations will be limited.
- Schools will discontinue the use of self-service food or beverage distribution.
Kindergarten Registration
Please remember that Kindergarten registration is continuing online. The registration site is housed on the OCS district website and any child domiciled in Onslow County who will reach age five on or before August 31, 2020 is eligible for kindergarten.
As part of the kindergarten registration process, parents will need to submit digital copies (scans or pictures) of the following with their registration:
- proof of birth date (birth certificate)
- proof of domicile such as a current (within 30 days) electric or water bill showing the parent/guardian name and address
- copy of the parent/guardian photo ID
Immunization records and the North Carolina Health Assessment will be required prior to the student’s first day but may also be uploaded with the enrollment packet.
