Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day in Canada is a memorial day observed on November 11th to honor the members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the line of duty during World War I and subsequent conflicts. The date marks the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany, ending World War I hostilities on the Western Front in 1918. Canadians observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers. Remembrance Day ceremonies often include the laying of wreaths, parades, and the wearing of red poppies, which became a symbol of remembrance after the famous war poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The day serves as an opportunity for reflection and gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who served in the Canadian Armed Forces. While Remembrance Day in Canada primarily honors the sacrifices of military personnel, there is a growing recognition of the need to acknowledge and remember the contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous peoples in the military.

Indigenous Remembrance Day initiatives highlight the involvement of Indigenous soldiers in various conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Many Indigenous individuals have served in the Canadian Armed Forces, including in significant numbers during both World Wars.

These initiatives seek to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, fostering a sense of unity and recognition of the shared history of military service. Efforts are made to include Indigenous perspectives and rituals in Remembrance Day ceremonies, acknowledging the unique contributions and experiences of Indigenous veterans. It's an ongoing process of honoring the diverse stories and contributions of all who have served in the defense of Canada.

Goal setting continues at Fairfield!

This week we are showcasing, Julia!

Julia's goal was to master all of the sounds on the Phonics Diagnostic Screener. Before setting this goal, Julia knew around half of them. As of today, she knows all of them but one!

We are so proud of your hard work, Julia! Julia reported that, "I can read my work a lot better now in class!" Her teacher said her fluency has also gone up by 20 words!

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a Hindu festival celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy. It's often called the "Festival of Lights" because it involves the lighting of lamps and candles to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival usually lasts for five days and includes various rituals, decorations, feasts, and the exchange of gifts. People also burst fireworks and create intricate rangoli (decorative art) during Diwali. It's a time for families to come together, celebrate, and share the festive spirit.
