Attention Seniors
Hello Seniors!👩🎓
Many of you may be wondering when you should commit to your college. Please DO NOT commit to your college until you have received your financial aid award letter from the college. Once you receive your award letters, then you will know which college is most affordable for you. If you commit prior to receiving the award letter, you may end up owing much more than you realize. In addition to this, colleges often provide additional grants or scholarships after the FAFSA is completed, so you do not yet know which college will give you the most money.
As you may have heard, the FAFSA is being delayed and will not be received by the colleges until the middle of March. This means that the colleges will probably not send you an award letter until the end of March, or possibly April.
Typically you would commit to your college by May 1st. However, because of the FAFSA delays there is talk that colleges may be extending that deadline, but that will be determined by each college.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
Ms. Maxwell🧡

Say Yes Cleveland Family Survey Letter
Greetings Cleveland Early College families!
I hope this letter finds you doing well! Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year. Cleveland Early College is a Say Yes Cleveland school. Say Yes Cleveland is a local organization that provides two key things for CMSD students: support services in school and tuition scholarships to college or career training after high school. Part of becoming a Say Yes Cleveland school is that Say Yes provides fulltime Family Support Specialist for each building, and I have had the pleasure of supporting the students, staff, and parents in this amazing school community. Currently, Say Yes Cleveland has begun its survey season for families where we ask that you participate in a 35-40 question survey, this survey will help us here at Cleveland Early College better understand your student(s)/family needs.
The survey should only take about 10 minutes and it is very important that you complete it as soon as you can. To access this survey please use this link https://cleveland.sytepps.org/ or scan the QR code below from your mobile device. For you to complete this survey you will need your students ID number and birthdate to login. Once the survey is completed, your name will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win tablets, gift cards and other prizes.
Please note the data from this survey will strictly be used to provide resources to students and their families. This information will remain private and will not be shared with anyone. Please feel free to contact me if you need any support with completing this survey or if you need your student(s) ID number.
Thank you,
Channon Cotton

Early College's very own Say Yes Family Support Specialist Ms. Channon Cotton featured in Cleveland Foundation article
Cleveland celebrated its fourth year as a Say Yes city in January 2023. Since the launch of the program, Say Yes Cleveland has awarded over $8 million dollars tuition scholarships. In spring 2023, more than 1,600 students were enrolled in postsecondary education with a Say Yes Cleveland scholarship, while 89 Say Yes scholars earned an associate’s degree or career certificate, and nearly 100 have graduated with their bachelor’s degree. Overall, in their efforts to fund $125 million in scholarships for the next 25 years, they have amassed $100.5 million. While Say Yes is notably recognized for its scholarship funding and lessening the gaps in monetary accessibility for students searching for higher education, it also works to ensure that all students, as well as their families, are fully equipped with the resources to keep students on track with the help of family support services.

“I really think kindness, knowledge, organization, and the willingness to ask for help are what make me successful,” says Channon Cotton, who has been working as a family support specialist at John Hay High School since 2022. “Knowing what we do as family support specialists at Say Yes is extremely key. Knowing that we are not discipline; we are support.” she adds. “I see myself as a light, a pillar of support.”
“It’s been absolutely amazing. Say Yes was definitely a job that I prayed for and I’m sure that it was a good marrying of my background career and education,” Cotton continues. With a degree in psychology and a master’s in school counseling, she has experience working in children’s family services, social services, working with individuals with disabilities, and the education field. “Being able to merge those two together has been a really wonderful experience: to see the students grow, build relationships with them, and make sure they succeed,” she says.
Through her first time working with high school students at John Hay High School, making her space readily accessible has been a big part of how she has been successful in her role. She states, “My office is located in what we call the Student Services Hallway. So, I try to make my room warm and inviting. A lot of students say it’s the room that smells good. So, when they come around the corner, they know how to find me. Just really assuring them that whatever they may need, whether it’s a referral, a challenge with transitioning into high school, if they have just lost a loved one, they can come to me.”
