Dear Christ the King School Families,

What a week of wonderful weather with which we were blessed as we moved into October!!

Aside from the alliteration, everyone at CKS seemed to be taking advantage of the warm temperatures: students were enjoying the playground equipment (and just being outside), and Mr. Luneau brought a few of his P.E. classes to Calahan Park for the period.

Many thanks are extended to our Admissions and Advancement Director, Jon Hughes, and all sponsors, volunteers, and participants for the successful CKS Annual Golf Tournament, held on Friday, September 29th, at the Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg. Again, I am in awe of the amount of dedication and love our community continuously shows for our school.

On Tuesday, the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes ventured to Chapin Orchard in Essex Jct. Students in these classes engaged in prior lessons that focused on the life cycle of an apple, the pollination of bees, and the interconnectedness of nature. Thus, a field trip to an orchard brilliantly placed these lessons in context and provided concrete examples of learning. Students, teachers, and chaperones enjoyed the lovely weather and time spent together. Although I wasn’t able to “tag along,” I was given the opportunity to sample a few very fresh Vermont apples (something I haven’t experienced in five years - truly, nothing compares).

Wednesday, a very busy day for the school community, began with Holy Mass (hosted by Mrs. Cootey’s 3rd grade class). I was able to sit with Miss Jenny and the pre-K class, listening to Father Justin’s Homily in which he shared the contributions of St. Francis of Assisi. At the end of the day, CKS hosted its first “Blessing of the Animals;” families were invited to bring their pet or a representative form of the pet to the upper playground at 3:00 pm. The turnout was quite impressive: dogs, cats, guinea pigs, a chicken, and a lizard were in attendance as Father provided a Blessing and sprinkled Holy Water on the animals.

To complete our week, Ms. Cade and the 6th grade class led the entire school in the Living Rosary, commemorating the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary on Saturday, October 7. Listening to the young voices praying to our Lady for intercession was incredibly powerful, as we entered the Luminous Mysteries of Jesus Christ. The Rosary is our greatest weapon against the evil in our world, and I hope families will find a bit of time to pray this prayer. On that note, CKS is humbly asking families to consider inviting Our Blessed Mother into their homes, one week at a time by hosting the Our Lady of Fatima’s Pilgrim Statue. After everyone enjoys the three-day weekend, please prepare yourselves for several upcoming events. Next week, we will be enjoying our first Popcorn Friday (yay!!!), and the 8th grade class will be walking to visit Champlain Chocolate on Friday. Please remember and plan for the upcoming Book Fair (thank you, Mrs. Bonneville!), Monday, October 16 through Friday, October 20, in the gym. Also, the Grandparents and Special Friends Day will be occurring on Friday, October 20, so please mark your calendars. Stay tuned for even more happenings!!

Finally, I want to apologize to Mrs. Culupa for the misspelling of her name in last week’s issue (autocorrect can be so annoying).

Student safety is our top concern throughout the entire day, starting with arrival. Please note these reminders and follow all procedures to ensure the safety of all students.

• Reminder for parking in the morning - Parents cannot park in the upper parking lot when dropping off their children for safety reasons
• No Parking in the middle parking lot at drop off or dismissal
• If you need to park to drop off your child, use the lower parking lot
• Please drive very slowly in drop off lane and be extremely careful when pulling out of the line

CKS' Grandparents and Special Friends Mass and Celebration will take place on Friday, October 20th. We will begin the day with Mass at 8:20 AM followed by a reception and classroom visits. (Of course, the Book Fair will be open as well!) All Grandparents with an email in our system will receive an electronic invitation and RSVP. If your family does not have a Grandparent who can attend, you are welcome to invite a "special friend" to join us! You can reach out directly to grandparents or a special person in your family's life and have them RSVP HERE.

The Mass is likely to be crowded, and some may not feel comfortable, so on the RSVP form, there is the option to attend only the reception and classroom visits.

We will also need items for the reception. Please sign up HERE. As we have limited storage space, all items should be brought to CKS on the morning of the event.

Students need to remember to bring their water bottles to school each day; in an effort to live our mission at Christ the King, and to be stewards of the Earth, we will no longer be ordering plastic cups to be used at lunch after this last purchase.

As we come into fall and winter, please review the updated CKS illness policy. CKS expects that all families are in agreement in working towards preventing the spread of illness to other students, faculty and staff. We require all recommended vaccines and encourage all seasonal vaccines including the Flu and Covid 19 vaccines.

Please notify the CKS OFFICE of any absences or illnesses at cksoffice@cksvt.org or 802-862-6696.

• Students or faculty with a fever will be sent home. CKS considers a fever to be a temperature of 100.0 or higher.
• Students or faculty who vomit at school will be sent home.
• Students with 1 or more symptoms other than fever that might mimic flu, COVID or other respiratory issues will be seen by the CKS office.
• Students or faculty who cannot participate in the activities of the day because they feel unwell regardless of diagnosis or symptoms will be sent home. They may return once symptoms have resolved.
• Students with disruptive symptoms (such as persistent coughing or nasal discharge) will be sent home if symptoms cannot be controlled with OTC medications. They may return once symptoms lessen or resolve.

The school is in need of at least one large, fireproof, lockable filing cabinet for the CKS Office. If anyone has a cabinet to donate, please call the school.

New this year: Shadow Days at Rice will be a half day event, and families will be able to choose a morning or afternoon session. However, Shadow Days will not run all year, but will be held on (2) separate weeks: the first week will be November 13-17, 2023 and the second week will be February 12-16, 2024. Shadow days will be held on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays, due to the block schedule. If a student would like to schedule a time to come to one of those days, please reach out to Stacy Bessette (www.rmhsvt.org or bessette@rmhsvtorg). Space will be limited, so reserve your spot early! We understand walking into a new school can be intimidating for some students, and we take great care to ensure each student feels welcome and at ease.

The 8th Grade class will have a Bottle Drive once every month as a fundraiser for their end of the year trip. If you could please bring in your bottles and cans on October 20th, the 8th Grader class will truly appreciate it! We will provide pick up dates for every month in the newsletter

After a very wet summer that limited time on the links, we were blessed with a nice cool fall day to play some golf and raise some serious cash for Christ the King School! The Golf Tournament and Corporate Sponsors helped to raise over $20,000 to support the children, programs, and mission of Christ the King School. Wow!

Next Friday is our first Popcorn Friday of the school year! If you have not submitted your form, please do so as soon as possible!

- Attend a PTO meeting

We have lots of items in the shop for the whole family to get ready for fall. We are taking donations of lightly used and and clean winter items.
