2. National MCH Trainee Blog Post: Competency #11–Working with Communities and Systems

Second year MCH student Bianca Zanders shares her deployment experience working with Minneapolis Public Schools supporting the Minneapolis Vision Health Task Force. The Task Force includes a variety of stakeholders, ranging from local and national government to healthcare professionals and non-profits (and includes the Center!). The key to making an impact? Bianca says that working with communities ensured reach, and national-level conversations fueled a cohesive vision for eye health.

3. Student Spotlight: How did Amanda Neubauer’s Experience with the Lactation Advocacy Committee Help Build Her Skills in Advocacy and Policy?

Amanda shares her Center-funded deployment experience working with the UMN Lactation Advocacy Committee. Throughout her experience, she was able to network, gain insight into lactation policy, and advocate for lactation and breastfeeding support on campus.

7. Centering Black and Indigenous Mamas: The Right to Live and Thrive

8. Health Advantages and Disparities in Preterm Birth Among Immigrants Despite Disparate Sociodemographic, Behavioral, and Maternal Risk Factors in San Diego, California
This retrospective cohort study looked at single live births born in San Diego County, California between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2012. Preterm birth prevalence was highest in American-born Black women (10.9%), followed by Filipinas whether born in the Philippines (10.8%) or the US (10.7%), and American-born Asian (8.6%) women. Preterm birth prevalence was lowest for foreign born Somali (5.5%), “Other” (5.7%), White (6.0%), and Mexican women (6.1%).

10. Advancing Health Equity: Public Health Solutions for Climate Change

The Health Disparities Round Table 2020 examines the effects of climate change on health inequities and identifies ways to build capacity to address this issue.

11. Article: Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs (CYSHN) are More Likely to Have Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Using data from the 2016-17 National Survey of Children’s Health, this article from Child Trends shows that CYSHN have a higher prevalence of ACEs than children without special healthcare needs. Additionally, CYSHN are more likely to experience two or more ACEs than children without special healthcare needs.

12. Brief: Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Mothers and Their Children in Illinois

This brief from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration informs the development and implementation of policies and practices that address the needs of incarcerated mothers in Illinois and reduce the impact of incarceration on their children. It highlights how incarceration creates barriers to parenting and limits contact between incarcerated mothers and their children, and draws attention to programs across the country that are working to address those barriers and mitigate the negative impacts of incarceration on both mothers and their children.

13. Tipsheet: Best For You, Best For Baby–5 Tips for Preventing Birth Defects

The National Association for County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) created this tipsheet with information on ways pregnant people can prevent birth defects. The tipsheet emphasizes that not all birth defects can be prevented, but there are steps pregnant people can take to increase their chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.

14. Data Brief: Trading Sex and Sexual Exploitation among High School Students–Data from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey

Starting in 2019, the Minnesota Student Survey included a new question for 9th and 11th graders. They asked, “Have you ever traded sex or sexual activity to receive money, food, drugs, alcohol, a place to stay, or anything else?” This data brief shares information on Minnesotan youth who have traded sex. It includes demographics, graphics, and details about the Safe Harbor law.

16. News Article: Changing How We See Ourselves with Yoga–Practice May Counter Excessive Cultural Importance Placed on our Body Image

Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, Division Head of Epidemiology and Community Health, was recently featured in The Varsity (University of Toronto). She shares her research on the impact of yoga, and specifically how yoga can change cultural expectations of external appearance.
